It's a national celebration that commemorates the day when a community of slaves in Galveston, Texas were informed of the abolition of slavery on June 19, 1865 — 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth will begin in Knoxville with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission Parade. In collaboration with the Beck Cultural Center, the march will start at Chilhowee Park, 3300 E. Magnolia Ave., and run through Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and end at Dr. Walter Hardy Park.
