Two Gainesville City Commission seats will be decided after in-person voting on Tuesday in races expected to have a light turnout. Consequently, the District 1 race pitting incumbent Gigi Simmons against challenger Desmon Duncan-Walker could come down to a handful of votes, officials said. Both women grew up on the east side of town and have ideas for how the city should play a role in improving the area. TJ Pyche, director of communications and outreach for the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Office, said Friday that municipal elections usually have a low turnout, and based on early voting, he expects the same in this election.
