Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, had requested Sai Mir Mian Mohammed, a Muslim saint of Lahore, to lay its foundation stone in 1589. In 1604, Guru Arjan installed a copy of Guru Granth Sahib in Harmandir Sahib. It was Maharaja Ranjit Singh who rebuilt the Gurdwara in marble and copper in 1809, and covered the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. Thus, the shrine got its name, the Golden Temple. It is the foremost Gurudwara in India.
