If there was a fire or emergency in Augusta Township during the last 50 years, chances are good that Maynard Vandervelde was there to help.
Vandervelde, one of the founders of the North Augusta fire hall, celebrates 50 years as a volunteer firefighter on May 1.

At 72, Vandervelde is still on the job and says he has no plans to retire. His decades of service include as a truck captain, fire inspector and the department’s chief fire inspector.
