Hempfield school board to hold meeting about policy for transgender athletes

Should transgender athletes be allowed to compete on high school sports teams? It's a question being debated around the country and here in the Susquehanna Valley. It will be the focus of Tuesday night's Hempfield School District board meeting.Dozens of people are expected to speak at the meeting. The issue gained attention in the spring when a transgender athlete wanted to join the girls track team.A statement on the district website reads, "Recently, members of the Hempfield community have raised important questions about district athletics, with thoughtful concerns about athletic integrity, student participation and eligibility, gender equity, and safety."The board created a committee – which includes students, coaches and administrators – to examine the district policy for transgender athletes."We wanted to hear everything. We wanted to hear what everybody had to say so that we had a really well-rounded base to try to make some kind of decision how we move forward here," school board member Chris Smiley said.Smiley said the board has heard from hundreds of community members and outside groups. He said he plans to speak at the meeting and is hoping both sides can find common ground so they can move forward. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Hempfield High School Performing Arts Center. The public can also join the meeting using Zoom.
