The Māori Party has asked the Independent Police Conduct Authority to look at the way police handled a threat to it and to te iwi Māori in general.
Co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says when she complained about a YouTube video threatening to slaughter Māori and burn marae, police took two days to call back – and eventually decided the white supremacist who made the video was not seen as a threat because of mental health issues.
That contrasts with the response to a threat against National Party police spokesperson Simeon Brown, where two Māori have already appeared in court charged with threatening to kill.
