After sailing into port for the first time on Wednesday, the crew of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s newest, and largest-ever ship, HMNZS Aotearoa, marked their visit with a charter ceremony on Friday. The ceremony began with Ngati Te Whiti welcoming the ship’s company onto Puke Ariki Landing with a powhiri before the formal charter presentation began at 11am. On receipt of the charter, the ship’s company then took to the streets of New Plymouth for a parade, which took in Ariki, Egmont, Devon and Liardet streets before returning to the landing.
