Porsche should have made it from the start. For years there were rumours swirling around that the German firm wasn’t going to allow something to best its precious 911, that the king must not be toppled. The problem was that the Cayman was always so damn good, not exploring its full potential seemed a waste. Eventually Porsche began to give in, the first generation with a Cayman R, then in the second, 981, generation a jazzier GTS. Each was great and gave the little coupé extra room to spread it wings, but not quite enough… And then, in 2015, Porsche gave the 981 Cayman the GT treatment and brought out the GT4. Otherwise known as: the car the Cayman always should have been.
