Voice actors from the "SpongeBob" cartoon, like Tom Kenny, return to voice their iconic characters, while new stars, like actress and comedian Awkwafina, also join the cast. The film was originally set to debut in theaters in February 2019, but the movie's US premiere was delayed several times due to the pandemic. The movie did end up playing in Canadian theaters in August 2020 and internationally through Netflix in November 2020.
