Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her interim budget speech said 8.3 million self-help groups with 90 million women are transforming the rural socio-economic landscape with empowerment and self-reliance. The government has decided to enhance the target for Lakhpati Didis from 20 million women to 30 million. The Lakhpati Didi scheme is aimed at encouraging women to start micro-enterprises within their villages and training women in self-help groups to enable them to earn at least ₹1 lakh per annum. The women are trained in diverse skills such as tailoring, weaving and bulb making.
