First-ever New Zealand Sign Language museum guide rolled out

There are hopes the guide’s model can be expanded to all museums in Aotearoa. Cooper said despite NZSL being an official language, the Deaf community continued to experience significant accessibility hurdles with almost every aspect of public space.
Barriers for museums include assuming Deaf people can easily read or understand written English descriptions of works, and video content being available, but not captioned.
Despite many NZSL speakers being able to understand English, Cooper said the experience was still not the same as it required much more energy to decipher, with English often being a second language for sign language speakers.
