In Novi, less than 100 students are gone from the previous year. But both Huron Valley and South Lyon have been decimated, with the two districts combined losing more than 1,100 students. If those students do not return this fall, their absence will equate to millions of dollars of lost funding. “We lost 600 students and we attribute that to COVID-19,” Huron Valley Superintendent Paul Salah said. “Just off the top, 210 are families that said, ‘We are not interested in dealing with COVID-19 and the potential transmission with face-to-face’ and they chose to homeschool. We also saw a number who chose to move out of state since they now have the option of working from home, and about 70 went to private schools.”
