Inmate found with 40g of meth should not be penalised for smuggling it into prison, says court

He was arrested that morning in Palmerston North, processed at the police station, then taken to prison after a brief court appearance.
He was then strip searched in prison, with staff getting 3g of meth off him then, before being taken to his cell for the night.
He was spotted the next day smoking meth, with Corrections officers finding 37g of the drug in a bag down his pants.
He claimed at trial he found the package on a table in a strip search room.
When he was sentenced, Judge Stephanie Edwards bumped up Tregoweth’s sentence because he had taken the meth into prison.
