He succeeds his father Idriss Deby who died while visiting troops on the frontline of a fight against northern rebels, Army spokesman Azem Bermendao Agouna announced his death in a broadcast on state television. General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has picked 14 generals to compose the transitional military council (CMT), which was established following the death of former President Idriss Deby Itno, according to the first decree of the CMT published by public television. The rebels in Chad have objected of appointment of General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno saying: “Chad is not a monarchy.”
