An Ithaca police officer has been demoted and suspended following an investigation into comments he made about assaulting a rape suspect. Sergeant Kevin Slattery self-reported comments he made on his body camera this past October, in which he describes beating Jovan Monk during a 2014 incident. Mayor Svante Myrick says Slattery’s comments do not set a good example for the department and that discipline is warranted. He will be moved down from sergeant to officer, and will not be eligible for promotion until after two years.
