ISLANDERS should not have to fundraise to provide meals for children, a backbench Deputy has said, following a crowdfunding campaign to provide local secondary schools with free school meal vouchers.

Deputy Rob Ward, who chairs the Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel, praised the fundraising duo but said it raised questions about the government’s commitments to children.
Audrey Laurens-Chalmers and her daughter, Molly, set up the page last month with the aim of supplying meal vouchers to vulnerable students at Haute Vallée, Grainville, Les Quennevais and Hautlieu. The funds raised, which currently total more than £7,000, will be given to the charity Caring Cooks, who will provide the schools with lunch vouchers – entitling pupils to a free hot meal, dessert and water.
