Jim Moses: Genealogy Programs Community Columnist Last time I wrote a little about Family Tree Maker, the program I use, and I also mentioned RootsMagic. I'd like to continue with FTM today. I like it because it is fairly easy to use, and most of the features are the way I want them (I can choose the date format, and several other things to make it unique to the way I do things). Also, FTM can be uploaded directly to ancestry.com, which is very nice. Actually, you can go either way—from FTM to ancestry, or from ancestry to FTM. That scares me a little because if I move from ancestry to FTM I'm not sure what is coming down. Therefore, I only go one way—from FTM to ancestry. That way my FTM data stays pure; only what I have entered is there. My goal is to have no errors, but I am positive there are some mistakes in the more than 5,400 people in my tree. Some are there because I made a mistake in my typing, and some are there because the data are faulty. At least I have eliminated the possibility of bringing errors in from ancestry.
