Theyre both standing by, but first lets take a closer look at what is in the memo with abcs david wright who is near maralago in florida. David, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan and paula faris. The release of this secret memo has caused a political firestorm and while it may not include the bombshell promised by house republicans, the memo and the politics surrounding its release could have some major fallout for the russia investigation. I think its a disgrace, whats going on in this country. I think its a disgrace. A lot of people should be ashamed of themselves and much worse than that. Reporter President Trump has made it Crystal Clear what he thinks of the memo. This now is the biggest abuse of power Corruption Case in american history. Reporter the democrats say its the president and his allies who are playing politics. The goal was simply to get a misleading piece of information before the public, help support the president , help discredit the Mueller Investigation and the fbi. Reporter the republican memo specifically seeks to discredit the man who appointed special counsel bob mueller and oversees the russia investigation, Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein. According to the memo, rosenstein endorsed the continued eavesdropping of carter page, a former Foreign Policy adviser to the Trump Campaign and a suspected russian agent. An essential part of a warrant application he signed according to the memo was the infamous russian dossier paid for by the democrats and compiled by a former british spy christopher steele. The dossier was presented to the court as if it was true. The court was not told that the democrats actually paid for this. The question is, did this dossier lead to this create this investigation . Reporter democrats worry the president is looking for an excuse to fire rosenstein in order to short circuit the russia investigation. The firing of Rod Rosenstein in my view would be an act of obstruction of justice just as firing bob mueller would be. Reporter the president was asked about it point blank. Does it make you more likely to fire him . Do you still have confidence in him after reading the memo . His cryptic answer. You figure that one out. Reporter the release of the memo puts the president at odds with his own fbi director who opposed releasing it. Chris wray sent a video message to the agencys rank and file telling them, quote, i stand by our shared determination to do our work independently and by the book. Now, the former trump adviser who is at the center of all this, carter page, says the memo vindicates him. He denies he was ever a russian spy. But the democrats are crying foul. They say what the republicans have done here is cherrypicked certain details to come up with a narrative favorable to the president. They say that on monday theyll renew their calls to release a counter memo that rebuts this republican memo point by point. Dan and paula. Yeah, the story is far from over. David, thank you. We want to continue this conversation. As we said, theres a lot to unpack here. Well bring in former fbi agent brad garrett and political analyst matthew dowd. This first question i want both of you to answer but, guys, lets get right to the core allegation of the memo that in the thick of the campaign, the Justice Department, the fbi used information that was in part bought and paid for by the Clinton Campaign to spy on someone, carter page, associated with team trump. If true isnt that a problem, brad . Lets begin with you. Of course, its a problem if that were true, but let me explain something, you dont have the luxury of picking where your sourcing information comes from. Most of the time it is biased, but the point being can you corroborate it. Just because its biased doesnt mean its not true. I will tell you based on experience that getting wiretaps approved, you have to have layers and layers of corroboration to get both the fbi, the department of justice and the judge to sign a wiretap order. So the idea that it was just based on a dossier is just silly. All right, matt. Well, to me this thing i mean, obviously we should raise questions about how these fisa applications are done in the course of this, but like in life or politics or in marketing, the best thing you can do is undersell and overdeliver. What the republicans have done and chairman nunes has done is oversell and underdeliver. The last time we saw Something Like this was when Geraldo Rivera revealed al capones vault and what we have is very little evidence of a problem, and in the end this doesnt raise any questions about the mueller probe. So, let me pick up on that, matt, because critics say this memo may be used as a pretext for the president to fire Rod Rosenstein. He is the Deputy Attorney general in charge of the russia probe. He is the only man right now who can fire the special counsel, robert mueller. The white house insists there are no plans to fire rosenstein, but if the president would do that, what do you think the consequences would be politically . Well, thats what i think this memo is all about. There really is no legal question that this memo has somehow really substantively argued for. Its really a political memo and the political memo is in the short term it can muddy the waters, but also it can provide donald trump, the president , with some evidence in his mind of how he can circumvent the Mueller Investigation. As i said earlier, this memo raises no questions about the credibility of bob mueller investigating the russian collusion or other issues related to that, but it can muddy the waters and put donald trump in the position of being able for him to politically try to shortcircuit the investigation. Youre talking about this already but i want to drill down on it a little bit. This story is so complicated and it involves names that are not household names, Rod Rosenstein, carter page. Its confusing even for me and i get paid to follow this stuff. Do you think in the end the republicans have succeeded in creating sort of generalized doubt and suspicion that serves to undermine the entire russia probe . Well, the unfortunate thing is i think the republicans have succeeded in undermining a two branches of government that were the less vestiges of credibility in the american public, which is the fbi, which the country desperately needs to investigate all kinds of crimes and the department of justice for the exact same reason, so, yes, they have achieved a shortterm benefit of muddying the waters, but the longterm detriment it does to these institutions that we desperately need is something that the country is going to have to deal with. Brad, as a former fbi agent you just heard matt say this really muddies the waters, but what is the longterm damage, if any, to the fbi as well as the department of justice . Well, the longterm damage is credibility, because youre only as good as people talking to you and your relationships both with allies in the country as well as overseas. If you took this at face value, it certainly comes across as really sloppy work, which i guarantee you is not the case. So the fbi will continue on, theyre probably angry, discouraged but determined. This story will continue on. Thats the one thing we can for sure agree on. Matt dowd, brad garrett, we thank you very much for your analysis on this saturday morning. Thank you, gentlemen. We now are going to move on to the chaotic and emotional scene in a courtroom. A distraught father lunging at larry nassar, the former olympic doctor convicted of sexually abusing scores of young female athletes. Now, the father had just heard his own daughters read their victim impact statements. He has now apologized but also saying he wants nassar to go to, quote, one of the deepest, darkest, hottest pits in hell. Abcs Erielle Reshef joins us with more this morning. Hi, erielle. Reporter hi, paula and dan. It was a dramatic day in court. That father says he was unable to contain himself as he stared down the man that was accused of sexually his three daughters and hundreds of others. Judge, would a distraught father have a chance to Say Something . You son of a [ bleep ]. Reporter raw emotion boiling over in a michigan courtroom. Grant me five minutes in a locked room with this demon. Would you do that . That is not yes or no . No, sir, i cant do that. Would you give me one minute . You know that i cant do that. Thats not how our legal system well, im going to reporter Randall Margraves charging former disgraced usa gymnastics doctor larry nassar during another sentencing hearing. Let me have that son of a [ bleep ]. Stay down. I want that reporter the father of three girls who say they were molested by nassar tackled, cuffed and held in contempt. Do not behave like that. No one can behave like this. I want to make sure its Crystal Clear. Well, you havent lived through it, lady. Reporter but no charges. The judge speaking in court. Im up here. I cant say that i understand. I dont know what it would be like to stand there as a father and know that three of your girls were injured physically and emotionally by somebody sitting in a courtroom. Reporter margraves later apologizing saying he was incensed watching nassar shake his head as two of his daughters read their impact statements. Now i have to live with the fact that i failed to protect my daughters. Reporter nassar sentenced last week in another jurisdiction to 40 to 175 years as his victims continue to step out of the shadows. Michigan State University where nassar worked is under intense scrutiny for his case and other alleged Sexual Misconduct and confirmed it was served a search warrant. The schools interim president said he was surprised because their lawyers are already discussing with the Attorney Generals Office about handing over potential materials and documentation. A wrenching story. Thank you, erielle, appreciate it. Thanks, erielle. And a man who was identified in Court Documents as a person of interest after the Las Vegas Massacre is now charged in connection with that massacre. This morning he is speaking out about his contact with the gunman, Stephen Paddock. Abcs Stephanie Ramos joins us now with more from washington. Stephanie, good morning to you. Reporter dan and paula, good morning. Its been about four months since the Las Vegas Massacre and were now getting some insight as to who sold the mass killer some of the ammo found in his hotel room. Im the guy that sold ammunition to Stephen Paddock. Reporter overnight an ammunition seller charged in connection with the Las Vegas Massacre. 55yearold douglas haig says he sold ammunition to Stephen Paddock in the weeks before he shot and killed 58 people at an outdoor music festival. At no time did i see anything suspicious or odd. Reporter according to Court Documents, haig admitted to selling about 700 rounds of tracer bullets to paddock. He said that he was going to go out to the desert and put on a light show either with or for his friends. Reporter early on in the investigation Authorities Say they discovered a shipping box among paddocks possessions with haigs name on it. Investigators say they also found haigs fingerprints on armor piercing bullets which were found in paddocks vegas hotel room. The complaint alleges haig did not have a license to manufacture or sell that type of ammo. No contribution to what paddock did. I had no way to see into his mind. The product that i sold him had absolutely nothing to do with what he did. Im a vendor. Reporter Court Documents also show authorities served a warrant on haigs mesa, arizona, home on october 19th and seized over 100 items including more armor piercing bullets. Haigs Attorney Says haig was contacted by Law Enforcement within 24 hours of the shooting and hes been fully cooperative. Dan, paula. Stephanie, thank you. Were going to shift our focus now to the massive effort to protect the super bowl just one day away. Officials are expecting 1 Million People to descend on minneapolis. And t. J. Holmes joins us with more on the challenge of keeping all those people safe. T. J. , good morning. Reporter hey, dan, paula, good morning to you both. A Million People are going to come through where i am right now. This is called the super bowl experience where fans come through and they can have fun and test their football skills, but at the end of the day were talking about were all going to watch, what, a Football Game tomorrow. But that game is a National Security risk of the highest level according to homeland security, and there are some unique challenges to securing this game based on the fact that its happening in winter in minneapolis. As more than 60,000 fans huddle inside u. S. Bank stadium and in minneapolis on sunday and more than 100 Million Viewers watch from home, these officers will be taking to the skies. Theres no intelligence to say that this is a particular threat but just because of this National Event and the size of it that, you know, because it gets a lot of attention makes it an interesting target. Reporter customs and border protections air and marine units will be patrolling and six black hawks during the big game capable of intercepting any aircraft lying too close to the game, a 32mile radius around u. S. Bank stadium. Homeland security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was on the ground in the twin cities getting realtime updates of this level 1 National Security event, the highest designation. What do you think when you walk into the stadium given your job title . Weve been working closely with them so weve actually built the security in. Reporter what is kind of built in already to a place like this . So, its the cameras, the surveillance, the ability to information share within the walls. Theres a variety of detection, the evacuation routes are very well thought out. Reporter more than 1,700 specially trained federal agents are in town assisting local agencies. Why such big numbers this year . I think theres just some unique challenges here like the weather. So, for example, well screen a lot of the people offsite so that nobody has to wait in line in the freezing cold. Reporter and, dan, paula, about that cold, this is my fourth day on the air here in minneapolis. The first day i was on the air it was 1 degree. The next day, it was 2 below, the next day, 7 below and today its actually 14 degrees so this is what they consider a thaw here in minneapolis. Youre not wearing a jacket. Reporter yeah, thats what is up today. Now, another part about security a lot of people in the next half hour hell be in a mankini. Lets not go that far, dan. You always take it too far but more about security, people are concerned it is Morning Television after all. Reporter people are concerned about bradys jersey. You know, it was stolen last year after the super bowl and he finally got it back found in mexico somewhere. This is not the jersey or an authentic one hell wear, but a lot of attention will be paid to his jersey this year. Authorities are going to pay a lot of attention to it but he said himself he will not let that jersey out of his sight if they end up winning this thing on sunday. Yeah, if they dont win, he doesnt care what happens to it. You can take it, t. J. Reporter yeah, okay. T. J. , cant wait to check in with you a little bit later in the show. In the mankini. Thank you, t. J. , appreciate it. Speaking of the cold weather lets get it over to robert marciano. The ice man. The ice man himself. Its important to layer up. You start with the mankini then you layer up after that and you can stay warm that way. Build a strong foundation. Exactly, thankfully theyre playing the game indoors. This is what happened just down the road from minneapolis in michigan yesterday. I94, massive pileup. You know where it is there, lower left part just off the lake of michigan, 17 semis up there. 12 passenger cars, just an absolute mess and thats in part because of the cold air now infiltrating the northeast and we got a couple of shots coming. Here are some of the windchills with what it feels like, 8 degrees in new york city, 5 in columbus, ohio. That next shot, t. J. Mentioned the thaw. Tomorrow things will change and looking at a windchill of 22 below zero in minneapolis as they get to and from the festivities there. This next batch of snow will be coming together across the great lakes today and tomorrow and move towards the northeast with some rain, mostly across the coast and some heavy rain, maybe some icing west of i 5 tomorrow. Thats a quick check. Not only is t. J. Going to be wearing a mankini in the next half an hour, but ill be trying to ski jump. Went to steamboat last week and i tried my hand. Can you do that again now that we can see you on a full shot . You have to get your head over the tips of the skis. You survived. I did. I didnt go very high. Hes been limping, though.
