Now, from abc 7, live, breaking news. Its just really hard. So because i just remember my parents building that whole house. Wildfires across the bay area continuing to burn tonight. Some families to the south being told to leave now. While, others in the north bay are finding their homes have already burned. And tonight, fear for firefighters about possible Lightning Strikes. Good evening. Thank you for joining us. Im eric thomas. This is a quick look at three big fires burning in the bay area. The lnu complex, in the north bay, has charred more than 347,000 acres. It is the secondestlargest wildfire in california history. The scu complex, which covers parts of alameda, contra costa, and santa clara counties, is right behind at 343,000 acres. And the czu complex is up to 74,000 acres. It is burning in san mateo and santa cruz counties. A crew in the north bay at the lnu complex and a crew in the south bay at the scu complex. But we begin with weather. There was some rain today. A welcome sight. But as we head into the over night hours, the threat of lightning continues. Its a major concern for firefighters, as well as residents near the fires. Drew. Thankfully, so far, we have only counted a handful of Lightning Strikes over the past couple hours. Live doppler 7. I do want to show you we just hatf san cz county about ten minutes ago. And between 9 00 p. M. And 10 00 p. M. Earlier this evening, you can see a pair of lightning this over the scu lightning complex. So lightning is in the forecast, over the next couple of hours. Thankfully, it is nowhere near of an extreme event like last sundays, where we counted thousands of Lightning Strikes. A lot of you have been telling me on social media you have seen a shower for about five or ten minutes or so. That is moving on into the east bay. We had a brief downpour around 8 30, near berkeley, west oakland. So there is some moisture in the atmosphere. Some light rain in the north bay as well. What we are watching is for more moisture streaming in from the south, over the next couple of hours. So, as we go hour by hour, we are tracking that potential for some more showers in the north bay. By about 3 00, though, the threat of lightning really drops significantly around the bay area. Its not only the threat of lightning we are facing. Its also poor ier qualiair qua drew, thank you very much. The scu complex in parts of the east and south bay is the Third Largest wildfire in state history. It grew to more than 343,000 acres and containment is at 10 . It covers several down counties including alameda, louise joins us live from one of those communities. Louise. Eric, we are about eight miles from this fire. Evacuations here began around 3 00 p. M. The problematic area is this road you see right behind us. The only way in and only way out. So, in case of a fire, they want it to be clear. As the winds picked up. It was a notice thousands were dreading. It was time to evacuate. Well, i think a panic, when you get that warning on your phone, you feel adrenaline rushing. Reporter a rush that could be felt as cars drove down this hill as the scu lightning complex fires threatened their neighborhood, eight miles away. Daniel, along with 1,100 others, were urged to get what mattered most to them and go. This is remi. Hes a 16yearold chihuahua. We took, you know, personal belongings, computers, medicine, clothes. You know, anything that we could lose. Empty driveways in jackson oaks, holiday lake estate, served as reminders that even though the fire is not visible from their windows, many are not willing to risk it. A storm system coming in thats extremely erratic, with wind and lightning and its very unclear what that might do to the fires. The scu lightning complex fire continues to expand on the other side of this hill. Right in between the fire and 1,100 households is the anderson lake. Many hoping it will become their saving grace. Cal fire rushing up the hill to battle the blaze. We drove closer to the danger zone and found ed leonard. He said at least 30 of his neighbors are staying back, tracking the expected storm and the fire. Look at the fire maps. Dont see nothing, yet. But we see fire, were gone. In these narrow and steep roads, leonard knows anything can happen. He shared his backup plan with us. We cant get down the hill, like you were saying, if a tree blocks the road or something, we are planning on heading over to the burnt out area thats already been burnt up in the last fire out here. As to when these residents will be able to return home, the city of morgan hill says it will depend how fast this fire expands and the weathe conditions. In morgan hill. Thank you very much. Now, to the north bay. The lnu lightning complex continues to burn its now the second largest wildfire in state history. Its burning primarily in napa and sonoma counties. Scorching more than 347,000 acres. Containment is at 21 . Now, this fires been very destructive. Wiping out hundreds of buildings. The wall bridge burning west of healdsburg is part of the complex, despite its distance from some other fires. Jr is in healdsburg tonight and, jr, you were near the flames just a little while ago. I was. Within the last hour or two. And i can tell you its 4 miles from where i am standing, right now. This is an area that you can see is closed off to the public, as chp officers are behind me. I talked with those firefighters who are out there on the frfron. They are having their own challenges because of the terrain. An entire hillside on fire sunday night, several miles west of healdsburg off of mill creek road. Everythings gone. Amber magnuss parents live near these flames. An area we counted at least half a dozen homes destroyed. And sadly, that includes the home of ambers parents. It was hard to like its just really hard. So because i just remember my parents building that whole house with everything they had. Just the two of them. And its its hard. Reporter as this hillside burned, firefighters who had traveled here from Southern California were keeping a close eye. A santa monica firefighter telling us that the hillside is too steep for them to actively fight it. Those wearer the day, say its hard knowing that there are still flames and there is still a firefight. The fear of wildfires coming in your direction, potentially, is its inexplicable. Reporter the damage to the homes that once stood on mill creek road is extensive. From the road, you can see a burned out car, a bathtub, and a propane tank, lying on the roadway. Magnus said that, while its hard, they will get through this. Everythings rebuildable. Thats i mean, theres a lot of beauty in fire. And theres a lot of sadness in it. But its just its perseverance and strength and its just like people. We crumble and rebuild ourselves. It just makes us stronger and more beautiful. So and back out here, live, in healdsburg, you can see this roadblock that has been set up by chp officers in the area around 4 miles or five miles from that location where there is that active firefight tonight. And i can tell you, the wind has picked up in the last couple of hours. Also, worth a mention, was in forestville this afternoon, a much better situation there. Not dealing with any major problems, like we saw in some of that video. Reporting, live, in sonoma county, jr stone, abc 7 news. Thanks for that information, jr. Firefighters on the front lines of the czu complex in southern san mateo and santa cruz counties say fires are burning above the marine layer. That cluster of fires has burned 74,000 acres. But, in this case, it will allow fire trucks to go after hot spots that they wouldnt be able to get to, without it. Cal fires released a stunning list of the resources it has committed to the fire statewide. At least 14,000 firefighters are on the line. 2,400 fire engines. 60 engines from out of state. Another 26 engines are en route, right now, from out of state. And 95 aircraft are working the fire. That includes a 747, all the way down to the smaller tankers and helicopters. In in that airoperations program, across the state and since august 15th, weve dropped 2. 4 million gallons of retardant in california on this siege. An additional 2. 5 million gallons of water, at the same time. At this point, the states battling two dozen wildfires that have burned more than a million acres. Like many firefighters during this time, those working the czu complex have been working grueling 12hour shifts or more to protect the community. And now, after one became the victim of a heinous crime, himself, Law Enforcement has a clear message for criminals. Stay away. Abc 7 news anchor dion lim has the story. Reporter as the czu lightning complex fire grows in santa cruz and san mateo counties, and hundreds of families evacuate their scorched homes. A crime, adding insult to injury. A firefighter fighting on the front lines becoming a victim, himself. I cant imagine a bigger lowlife than breaking into somebody, who is helping protect this community, breaking into his car and taking his wallet. And then, charging up a bunch of credit card charges and making money out of his bank account. The heinous act of stealing a wallet from a first responder. Compounded by at least eight arrests for looting in the areas of felton, boulder creek, and Scotts Valley and surrounding areas. Prompting the santa cruz District Attorney to issue this strong message. If you come to this county, if you come to these victimized communities, and you try to take advantage of them. The fulexlaw. Ught. Tcu you, reporter as victims seek shelter, the da, also, reporting instances of price gouging at businesses, such as hotels. Stressing prosecution to the fullest extent of the law, which includes a 10,000 fine. For now, as empathy for the fire victims grows, there is no empathy or patience for criminals. But a vow to keep them out and a promise of justice. It takes a special person to wake up in the morning, and say, you know what, im going to go victimize and traumatize people, who have already been through everything that this communitys been through. Dion lim, abc 7 news. Cal fire wants the public to be aware there is no official go fund me set up for the firefighter who had his wallet stolen. So if you see any go fund me, claiming to help him, use caution. Even people who dont live near one of the huge complex fires are feeling the effects. The flames are generating huge amounts of smoke. Making life miserable for many and downright dangerous for people with respiratory problems. The first and best defense to protect your health is to remain indoors, with windows and doors sealed. Erin. Smoke is really all around us right now. And we are seeing unhealthy, to even hazardous levels, in some areas of the bay area. Specifically, the Livermore Valley and east bay. Thats why staying inside is the best and cheapest course of action. But if you can afford it, there are other protective steps one can take, like making a cleanair room. We recommend purchasing hepa air filter. And also, to use for your hvac system. There is also a step between just staying indoors and shelling out cash for an air purifier. It involves a little money and elbow grease. In advance of fire season, by sealing off doors and windows and using caulking to make sure there are no spots, you know, where air can leak in. Yeah. Outside, you have to wear a mask and its usually an n95 but healthcare workers need those so the best advice is to stay inside. We have been talking about the weather and those thunderstorms moving in. The lightning hasnt been as bad as last week, so far. Right, drew . Yeah. And i want to emphasize the risk is not as extreme as it was last weekend. Last weekend, we had thousands of Lightning Strikes. That was historic. Tonight, were just counting strikes in the handful. Less than five right now. And we do think the strikes will remain less than about 50 overnight tonight. But, still, the risk is there for new fires to start with any Lightning Strikes we do have that move through the bay area this time of year. Thats why we want to be aware that there is the threat tonight. U lot uve been ight showing talking about some light showers moving through your ome light rain from hayward to san maron, as you move toward pengrove between napa and fairfield. Just an indication our atmosphere, it is pretty moist right now. Live doppler 7. There is that one Lightning Strike off the coast of santa cruz just about a half hour ago. We are seeing the moisture stream in from the south. Moving in from a south to north fashion and that will continue to be the trend over the next couple hours. You can see the Lightning Strikes on live doppler 7 really confined to the Central Valley around stockton, modesto, we had a couple Lightning Strikes. And north of sonora. What we are seeing right now is just some light rain, no lightning in the bay area, currently. And we do think that risk of lightning is really for the next three to four hours. So here is future weather. 1 00 a. M. , monday morning, early tomorrow morning, about an hour and a half from now, you can see theres still moisture in the north bay. Some pockets of light rain along the peninsula and in the east bay. But by 3 00, this moisture is really racing off to the north. And that is really going to lessen the threat of any lightning moving through the bay area. By about 8 00 a. M. , when you wake up, any showers are out of here. And i think that threat of lightning really goes to zero. So its really the next couple of hours we are watching, very closely, for any new Lightning Strikes. Regardless, we do have a redflag warning still in effect until 5 00 p. M. Tomorrow for those gusty winds and lightning that could spark new fires. Numbers right now, in the 50s and 60s. Still mild away from the coast. In the 70s and low 80s. But air quality has been a big issue. The pm 2. 5 levels right now are still unhealthy in pleasanton but thats an improvement from where we were earlier today. In pleasanton we had hazardous airquality levels. We still see sensitive groups for concord to san jose. Moderate for everywhere else. Tomorrow, though, its still the same. That air quality is going to fluctuate between poor and unhealthy. The light rain we are seeing out there tonight. N amosphere. We need some heavier showers and that is not in the forecast so take it easy out there over the next couple days. Overnight tonight, mid50s to mid60s. Tomorrow, kind of more of the same like we had today. 60s and 70s close to the coast. Our warmest spots will be in the mid90s. Here is the accuweather sevenday forecast. Planning the next seven days. There is that a. M. Storm threat. I would encourage you to visit abc 7 news. Com.
