The coronavirus that was headed to us. When people werent really taking it very seriously, you were taking it very, very seriously. So lets talk about our immune system, how it works, how it can be compromised, and how it leaves us vulnerable to viruses. So our immune system is a series of defenses just like you haveenses in real life with police and locked doors and alarms, et cetera. The immune system, initially its our skin and the skin oils and the bacteria on our skin that fight fungi and viruses. They fight off the bad ones. Same thing in your intestine, if something gets in your inte thing inyou haveheou breathe little whisk brooms, theyre called cilia, that whisk out the viruses. Theyre impeded by pollution, by vaping, and by smoking, so it allows the virus to get in those people easier. Theres a key point well come to on that whenabout how to avoid infections, and thats one of the pieces of good news about your immune system the Good News Network can do something about. In fact, were getting stronger in our immune system. Whenif it gets in and replicates in your cells, then you have a toll receptor. Its a receptor that sends out a loud signal, and it fights off the virus directly. We also have a acquired immune system, so two systems, innate and acquired. The acquired need to identify the virus. So they identify, and the key point in identifying is identifying these spike prei so the antibody that youve heard about, the neutralizing antibody, it grabs on to the spike. The nonneutralizing antibody, youve heard some of the antibodies arent useful, they attack this. Theyre useful for you, but the virus still can replicate and spread to other people. So those are the basics. We have skin, then your cilia, then the direct immune system, and then you have killer t cells that are acquired and the antibodies that are acquired. Ryan mm. What about exercise . What role does that play in staying healthy . So exexerciseand i have this shoe cause i want people to understand they wanna do the regular amount exercise, not an excessive amount. So we want you to do your normal amount, maybe a little more. That stimulates your immune system to fight. When you do more than two hours in a row, so for example, marathon runners, when they run for the two hours or longer, they impede their immune system for three weeks afterwards, so they have a three times increase infection rate. So we want you to exercise but not too much, and sleep is kelly that is fascinating. Wow, i did not know that. Another reason to not run a marathon. Ryan run the marathon. Kelly let me add that to the list. Ryan we were about to run the marathon, but yeah. Kelly let me just write that down, no marathon. Ryan got that. Kelly tell us about sleep because you and i have discussed sleep so many times, and the importance of sleep in our immune systems. So when you look at all the studies on immunity and what increases immunity, what increases what we call vaccination take rates, the success of vaccinations, the most important thing is actually sleep for three days beforehand, and i have this pillow here to remind me to tell you, with this virus its different. Normally we say sleep on your back cause that decreases back pain, but this time we want you to sleep on your side. Why . Because the virus replicates in the outer nose. This sars virus is different than the prior one. The reason the prior one doesnt infect many people, it only replicates deep in the lung, and thats harder to breathe those viruses out, but if you replicate here, it breathes out easy. The problem is, if you sleep on your back, youre going to absorb it in when you take an inhalation, so we want you to sleep on your side so it falls out. So, kelly, how do you sleep . Do you sleep on your side . Kelly well, okay, i am a natural sidefront sleeper, but because my dermatologist said that was causing wrinkles, ive been sleeping on my back. What do i do, dr. Roizen . Tell me how to fix it. Ryan priorities. In this statein this case the virus wins over wrinkles, at least for the nuntil you get a vaccination or until we get rid of it. So does ryan sleepryan, do you sleep on your back or side . Ryan i sleep on my stomach, and i hug a pillow, and i put one leg out like that. Thats actually perfect. Ryan oh, good. Thats perfect for ryan great. Thats perfect for getting rid of the virus. Ryan all right, lets taweve seen aweve seen a pillow, a sneaker, and a pool floaty device. Whats next . Now, kelly and i live pretty stressfree, but our executive producer always has this stressful look on his face. What do you advise . Kelly hes very concerned. Ryan yeah, look at him. Look at that stress. Kelly look at that. Dr. Roizen, i know youre not a psychiatrist or a psychologist, but what could you do ryan but please. Kelly what would you say the underlying cause of thatthat look of absolute alarm ryan pain and agony. Kelly what would you say yeah. Well, for all of us, the way we can manage stressso stress happens to everyone, and its one of the most important inhibitors of your immune system, ibitors so managing it is important. Take your first finger. Put it on your bellybutton. Take a big breath in, and your bellybutton should go out. As you take a breath out, your bellybutton should go back to your spine, and thats useful anytime. Someone cuts you off in traffic . Dont close your eyes, but put your finger there. Its a much better thing to do with your finger, and you can breathe out and in without disturbing anyone. The other thing that is really important that weve learned about managing your immune system and improving it is nutrition. So the keys for vaccination were sleep and getting your right supplements and multivitamins beforehand, personalized to you, but that was so that you get what you need, and those two things, sleep and the nutrition, were most important. Stress management and exercise were also key to the success of vaccinations, so the good news is were learning a lot about how to boost your immune system. Ryan thats great stuff. Doctor, i just have aim curious. Your background is so beautiful. Its taking stress away from me, so are youare you in the middle of a forest . No, this is, believe it or not, my office. Ryan wow. This is the Wellness Center of the clinic, and my office is this wonderful thing. Ive got a walking treadmillor a Treadmill Desk as well as a great view here, so this is ryan we wanna move in. [upbeat music] ryan closed captioning sponsored in part by ryan buhbye. Have a good day. Take care, guys. Today, on tamron hall. Online scams and covid crimes. For over 20 years, one man seduced and stole 1 million from a dozen women. How one victim teamed up with others to hunt him down. Plus, he lost clients after a videoconference turned into three minutes of terror. A warning about zoombombing. A womans search for a parttime job ended with cops at her door with guns drawn. How you can avoid the latest scams. An all new tamron hall starts now. [upbeat music] welcome to tamron hall from my home. So i know that over the past few months youve seen a lot of warnings of things that we should be more aware of. Whether its health, employmentbut theres another warning that maybe youve missed. Covid crimes, love criminals, preying on people who may feel isolated and alone and taking advantage of them, taking stimulus checks, even tricking some people into believing there are Job Opportunities out there for them. It is just rampant on social media, and maybe even popping up in some of your inboxes of your emails. Over the past 20 years, one man has used the internet and his charm to seduce and scam unsuspecting women in search of love. Hes been doing this for a long time, but theres a concern that people like him will capitalize on this moment in time. For him, a dozen women across the country fell prey, or fell victim to his scams. Richard scott smith allegedly conned them out of their hearts, their homes, and their money. Take a look. I met scott. I met rick. He called himself mickey. I was in love with him. Youve just got to trust me. Two weeks after we met, he said. All i love you. I thought it was weird. I came across a blog that had his picture at the top. I called my mom, and i said, mickey is not who you think he is. I was wife number nine. Theres jean, sandy, candy it was carol. Lisa. Jennifer. [inhales, exhales] he stole her 401 k . 100,000. 700,000. I lost everything. He lied to the entire world and then he disappeared. Rick, you lying sack of were coming after you. That was love fraud. A fourpart docuseries on showtime highlighting the stories of victims of Richard Scott smith, and joining us from kansas city, missouri, is one of his victims, tracy, and her daughter, sara, who both agreed to talk with us today. Thank you so much for joining us. So tracy, as i started off the show, you know, there are so many people looking to take advantage of the folks right now. Whether its because of loneliness or they think that maybe this person has some cash that i can get during these hard times. Three years ago, you met richard. He went by the name mickey at the time. What was it about richard that you believed was realthat was a connection between the two of you . A lot of it was the business aspect. He was a businessman. He was really charming. Kind of came in and swept me off my feet. Very understanding, accepted my children, and talked about the future a lot. It was all very appealing. Yeah and understandably. I mean, listen, i tell people all the time, i wasnt married until my late 40s, and whether you are divorced or been single to have someone in your life that is special is not a bad thing, and to even look for love is not a bad thing, you know . Right. Be clear on where i stand on this. So tracy, richard is accused of scamming a woman art of more than 1 million, but hes not a millionaire. Take me throughwhat did he ask you for . I mean, did this start with incremental things . You know, a loan, here. How did it start . Not at all. He never asked me for anything. It was more what he was giving me. He would give me things. He gave me jewelry. He gave me all kinds of things. He never asked me for anything. The first time i got scammed out ofand a financial way, was when we are looking at houses, and we were going to buy a house together, and he kept telling me his assistant sent the down payment to the title company, and it get lost in the mail, and wanted me to go ahead and write the check for it, and then he would reimburse me once they found the check. So thats how he did it. He never really asked for anything like loans or anything like that. It was, i dont know what happened to this check. Go ahead and pay it, and ill pay you back. A guy with that kind of experience being a con knows if you go in asking, may be a red flag will go up and the person will run off. On one hand, obviously, hes moving fast, but on the other hand, were told at a certain age you know what you want. So i wouldnt be surprised if you met somebody and they wanted to, you know, take it fast because youve dated so much. You know the checklists. You know what you want in a person, and if they fit the billokay. Thats how it works, right . Right, and he was offering us a different life than we had ever had. You know, i was a single mom. I struggled, i worried about money 24 7. You know, and he was offering me a life where i didnt have to worry anymore. Yeah, i know, i get it. Sara, you know, i thought about you when i was reading your moms story and your story. I was like, this is like dirty john, you know. He is like an episode of that, but that just speaks to how much this happens that we can think now in Popular Culture of things that have happened in books and blogs. So you saw richards picture on a blog, sara, and told your mom that he was not the person that she thought. Did you google him . How did he pop up on a blog that you were looking at . Well, so we knew him as mickey, and so we had searched him by that name and come up with nothing, pretty much, and then it wasnt until my sister went through his vehicle and found some paperwork with a different name, which was Richard Scott smith that we googled and yeah, we just typed Richard Scott smith into google and a blog came up with a nice picture of him in a blackandwhite jumpsuit behind bars. I wouldve passed out. Tracy, how did you confront him once you learned what sara had found. Well, my family was amazing. Sara kept him busy and got me away from him. She actually took him somewhere and dropped him off and fled, like, as soon as he got out of the car she took off. They set up a scenario that i needed to go get my son from school, and so i didnt know anything until i was on the road on my way home thinking that i needed to pick up my son from school. They actually intervened and got me away from him because they had read that he was violent. Right, because if you had confronted him then, we dont know what wouldve happened. I want to pause right there, tracy, i know sara has to get going. Thank you, sara, for joining us for this part of the story because when we come back, were going to find out what happened when tracy and a few of richards victims team up with a Bounty Hunter to launch a nationwide manhunt to bring him to justice. Thats next. Im a delivery Operations Manager in san diego, california. We were one of the first stations to pilot a fleet of electric vehicles. This says he has a warrant that is a felony warrant. So this son of a [bleep] is still out there. Wow. Welcome back. That was a clip from the fourpart showtime docuseries love fraud that follows the search for one man, Richard Scott smith, who allegedly conned a dozen women over the last 20 years and left them more than 1 million in debt. Were back with one of Richard Scott smiths victims, tracy, and we are also joined by rachel grady, the codirector and coproducer of love fraud, the docuseries. Rachel, ill start with you. You decided to create this docuseries after you discovered a blog about richard and all the women hed conned. Im just curious, as well, just with the ability to google people right now, we all know we do it, and weve been doing it for a while, but what prompted it in this case . We are looking for bigamist. We thought that was a very strange sort of niche of sociopath, and through that search, we found a blog, and once we found the blog and we met the women our story changed a bit. Especially since the story was ongoing, and he was at large. Tracy, you know, when you learned that you are not alone, and by the way, ive done this story many times to your point, rachel, over the years as a journalist. Weve even done different stories like this on our show because it is so frequent. People think it doesnt happen a lot, but it does, and you discover that there were so many other women, even some that had married him. Take me back to the moment that you justthe mask is ripped off and you see this person for the evil individual they are. It took a really long time to process the whole entire situation. There were so many facets to the story. There was the financial, the emotional, the you know, everything. There were so many different stories within the story. So it washumiliation was the main feeling. That, and you know, i was humiliated. I had to go back and tell all of these people who i saw every day and who cared about me that this had just happened to me, and it was horrible. No, i understand. Thats a big part of it. I mean, listen, thats why i think people like this man get away with it because the instinct is to be embarrassed, and you hide it, and you dont want to tell people unless you have to. Rachel, as i said, youve got the dirty john thing out there. Tyler perry had the movie fall from grace, so it crosses race lines, economic lines. I interviewed him a woman once was a spy, an actual government spy, and she lost 1 million to a man she never met. Are you surprised that in this case, this turned into a nationwide manhunt for this individual . Are you surprised by that . Yes. That was a big surprise. We did not set out to be part of a manhunt, or to join, you know, eventually what we described as a revenge squad of women that had been, you know, built out of not just money but as tracy said, it was the humiliation that really fueled heidi and i, who is my codirector, to really kind of join the women, and join carla, who is a kansas citybased Bounty Hunter that, you know, became interested in finding him. We all kind of banded together, and it turned into a nationwide hunt. No, we were just interested in finding, and trying to understand the mind of someone that would do that to people that all they want is love. Thats all they were looking for, and its a crazy kind of mind. It is. So rachel, let me ask you, have any charges been brought against this man . Yes, but the weird part is not so many considering hes been doing this for so many years. He was charged with Identity Theft and with that domestic abuse, but he has gotten away with a whole lot more. Well, first of all, tracy, the fact that hes been charged with domestic abuse, thank goodness your family lured you out of the house and did not have you there with him to confront him because it couldve turned out,
