Breaking overnight. Breaking news, remembering a legend, sean connery, the original james bond passing away at 90. Bond. James bond. Were looking back at the role that first made him famous and the rest of his decadeslong career. Breaking overnight. Police ambushed. A passenger in a pedicab opening fire in the heart of the French Quarter in new orleans. Two officers wounded. One shot in the face. What we know about the suspect who is now in custody. And tricky treating. The challenges of celebrating halloween during a pandemic. Well show you ways to keep the kids healthy and happy today. Good morning, and happy halloween. Well be in costumes later and its going to be embarrassing. Throughout the show, though, were going to be talking about safe ways for people to celebrate during this pandemic. But first, lets dive into our unavoidable top story, the hectic final weekend of an extraordinary president ial campaign. Just three days before election day, the president ial candidates are hitting the battleground states hard. President trump will be holding several events in pennsylvania. Former president barack obama will be joining his former Vice President , joe biden, for events in michigan. And the final push coming as early voting smashes records across the country. More than 85. 7 million americans have already cast their ballots. Abcs rachel scott is in detroit where joe biden and as we mentioned former president obama are teaming up again later this evening. Rachel, good morning. Reporter whit, good morning. Itll be the first time that joe biden and former president barack obama hit the trail together trying to win back this critical state of michigan. Listen, the candidates pulling out all the stops here in this final stretch battling over votes in the same turf as the country sees a rise in coronavirus cases. Overnight, President Trump heading into the final weekend of the campaign on a blitz through the midwest. We win this state, you know what, its over. Reporter holding packed rallies in states hit hardest by the virus. In michigan, where coronavirus cases set a new record for the Third Straight week, the president placing the blame on doctors, falsely suggesting theyre lying about the death toll. You know, our doctors get more money if somebody dies from covid. You know that, right . I mean, our doctors are very smart people. Reporter the reality, more than 229,000 americans have died from the virus and Health Experts say the president s own rallies were often followed by an increase in cases. No social distancing, few masks in sight. The president sometimes mocking those who do wear them. On friday, he singled out fox news host laura ingraham. I cant recognize you. Is that a mask . No way. Are you wearing a mask . Ive never seen her in a mask. Look at you. Whoa, shes being very politically correct. Whoa. Reporter when pressed by our Jordyn Phelps he defended those largescale events. Mr. President , do you think its at all dangerous to be holding these rallies while the numbers are going up . No, not at all. And theyre outdoor rallies. Theyre all outdoor. Anything else . Reporter as the president largely ignores the rise in cases, his rival joe biden is pointing them out. This week wisconsin like other states set a new record for daily cases, hospitals are running short on beds. Just had to open a field hospital. Thats what were facing. Reporter biden campaigning in the midwest too holding socially distanced drivein rallies. With just days to go the former vp on offense targeting iowa and wisconsin, states the president won in 2016 where cases are getting worse. Donald trump has waved the white flag. He surrendered to this virus, but the American People dont give up. Reporter and as the u. S. Hit another grim milestone, 97,000 new covid19 cases reported in a single day, the president blasting democratic lawmakers for limiting his crowd size. There are at least 25,000 people who wanted to be here tonight. Your far left democrat, attorney general keith ellison, and democrat governor, tried to shut down our rally, silence the people of minnesota and take away your freedom and your rights. Reporter with the race intensifying, the Vice President ial candidates on a swing through the southwest. On november 3rd, we need arizona to show america that this is trump country. It is time that we reject hate and division and unify as a country. Reporter and the candidates are now focused on turning out the vote. With just days to go, more than 87 million americans have already cast their ballot. President trump will be right back here in michigan, holding rallies. 87 plus a million americans have already voted, thank you so much. Lets stay in the crucial state of michigan, where rachel is, and bring in the democratic governor of that state, Gretchen Whitmer, who is coming to us from lansing. Governor, good morning. I know youve been critical of him holding rallies in your state but his team has been pushing back, the rallies are outside, handing out masks, whats your response to that . Listen, the footage tells the whole story. People are packing in right next to one another, many of them are not wearing masks, they are, you know, shouting and yelling, i mean, this is the circumstance under which we have seen covid spread. Weve seen it from his rallies. Theyve been contact traced back to the rallies. The fact of the matter is, we are posting the worst covid numbers throughout over the last eight months right now in many states in this country and its, frankly, because this white house has never been serious about having a National Strategy. 200 and almost 30,000 people have died. Tens of millions unemployed. People in food lines who never imagined they would be and still dont have a National Strategy eight months in and theyre contributing to more spread. Joe biden and barack obama are going to be holding drivein event in your state today. Your fellow michigan democrat, the congresswoman Debbie Dingell has raised concerns that biden may actually be showing signs of weakness among local union voters. How confident are you biden can win the key state of michigan . Im confident. You know, Debbie Dingell and i talk all the time and were, of course, concerned. Were taking nothing for granted, but heres the thing about joe biden. His plan around getting the American Economy back up and running, in concert with getting their arms around covid, thats how we really get things done. He understands what people are going through. He is a humble, decent human being who knows as an american president he serves everyone in this country, not states that are red or blue but everyone, and we need a president who can bring us together, who will fight for the middle class, the working people of this country, and ensure everyones got a real path and thats what joe biden offers and i think thats why he resonates so well with michigan voters. Speaking of voters in michigan and the voting thats happening right now, as you know, Election Officials in your state are now saying that we might not get results from michigan until the end of the week next week. What do you say to people who might be concerned about this delay . Well, listen, i think the most important thing is that we get the count right. We will move swiftly but our secretary of state has been saying for weeks because of the increased volume of absentee votes, it is going to take a little while longer to count them all. We asked the Michigan Legislature for the ability to give our clerks more time to process on the front end. They gave them one day. I was glad to sign the bill but it should have been a lot longer and so the fact of the matter is were going to get it right and we dont want anyone to call the election until its weve gotten an official determination from the secretary of state. Were going to count every ballot. Has the pandemic been impacting peoples capacity to vote in your state . I know in some states the pandemic, the virus has shut down polling stations. Is that happening in michigan . Well, what we have seen, you know, we amended our constitution in 2018 to give people the ability to go prior to election day and vote. Im so glad we did because, of course, none of us knew we would be in the midst of a Global Pandemic but its safer to go vote now. So to my fellow michiganders, if youve not voted yet, go today or go tomorrow or go monday. If you go to iowavote. Org you can plug your address in and find out what options are in your state and get those ballots in and not stand in line all day and not have to expose yourself to the potential spread of covid. Governor Gretchen Whitmer from michigan, thank you very much. Have a safe election. Thank you. Whit, over to you. In the final countdown to the election its your voice, your vote, and we are helping to make it count by breaking down the rules and voting deadlines in key battleground states. Lets go to minnesota here. A federal Appeals Court ruled absentee ballots there will need to be received by local officials by 8 00 on Election Night to be counted. The court ordering any ballots received after polls close in the state to be segregated or separated in a way that would allow their votes to be removed from voting totals if they are ruled invalid after the election. Now, if your ballot is not received by election day, you can vote in person. If you havent mailed your ballot yet you can hand deliver it to your county Election Office but you must do so by 3 00 p. M. On election day. Lets go to wisconsin now. The potential for a delay in Election Night results is now growing. The states sixth largest county will be duplicating all misprinted ballots, more than 13,000 ballots in the county were misprinted with a scratch mark that makes them unreadable by voting machines, so the county will have to refill out all the misprinted ballots onto new ballots and then run each one through the machines. And for those who plan to vote in person, remember, you will need to show an acceptable photo i. D. At your polling place. For more information on how to vote in your state, you can go to fivethirtyeight. Com.
