A lot of parents hoping they can keep their kids in school and learning in person there. Trevor, thank you so much. We appreciate it. Joining us now is dr. Celine gounder, a member of the biden harris transition covid Advisory Board and Infectious Disease expert. Dr. Gounder, thank you for your time this morning. We really appreciate it. I want to jump right to it here. When president elect joe biden is inaugurated on january 20th, what do you want to tackle immediately in fighting this virus that were not seeing from the Trump Administration right now . I think youll see the president elect invoking the defense production act. This will be an executive order to marshal resources, get manufacturers to produce the personal protective equipment, the masks, the face shield, the gloves that we have been pleading for for months. Weve been asking President Trump to invoke the defense production act for months. Weve been functioning in this scarcity rationing phase for months. Me, personally, when i have been caring for patients on the front lines at bellevue, i have been using the same face shield since march. So this is really a critical need that needs to have been met really months ago, but will be finally met under the new administration. Speaking of those critical needs that need to be met, like, immediately, President Trump has not accepted the results of the election, and the white house is blocking the transition of the biden team. How much of an impact is that having on your ability to hit the ground running, especially when it comes to the crucial task of distributing a vaccine . Look, were doing everything we can with the other partners that we can reach out to. That includes state and local Health Departments and public officials. That includes the private sector. This at the same time is a National Security threat. This is a national emergency. The idea that you would not have collaborative handover power in this context when National Security, the health of American People and the economy are very much at stake is really quite shameful. Do you think, quickly, that this delay in the transition could result in a delay of distributing the vaccine . I certainly hope not. Were doing everything we can to ensure thats not the case. There could be unforeseen consequences of this difficult handover. Biden has been vocal in his support of mask mandates. There is some question about his authority to do it on a national level. How do you plan to convince holdout governors and local leaders to get on board with masks . Can any of that be done before Biden Takes Office . I think i would remind the American People this is something that is in their hands to control. They should be taking we should each take personal responsibility for our health, the health of our families, the health of our communities. This is a great way to show you appreciate the Health Care Workers who have been making sacrifices for months and still have months of true sacrifice ahead. This is a cheap, effective intervention that does not close the economy and will help us keep the economy open. Just to follow up on that key part of the question, how do you convince the governors and those who do not want to get on board . How do you convince them to go along . Well be reaching out to other allies who may have those kinds of relationships. But ultimately, you know, whether you have a mandate or not, i think the mention here is this is a crisis, and we each need to step up. All right, dr. Gounder, thank you very much for your time this morning. We appreciate it. Eva, over to you. Now to the unrest overnight in the nations capitol. Supporters of President Trump clashing are antitrump protesters after a largely peaceful rally during the day. Rachel scott is covering politics for us from the biden teams base in wilmington, delaware. Good morning to you, rachel. Reporter eva, good morning. Hours after joe biden solidified his president ial victory with that projected win in georgia, thousands of Trump Supporters took to the streets in washington to show their support for President Trump as he refuses to concede an election he lost. Overnight fireworks exploding in the streets of d. C. As businesses prepared for the worst. In black lives matter plaza, protrump demonstrators tearing down signs. Multiple fights breaking out overnight. Police breaking them up using tear gas. At least 20 arrests made. Law enforcement attempting to quell the mounting tension by separating counter demonstrations. Those crowds drawing lines outside a d. C. Hotel. Counter demonstrators firing back with chants. This coming just one week after joe biden emerged as the president elect. Earlier in the day the demonstrators were largely peaceful, rallying behind a president who has refused to concede an election he lost. The president stopping by, too, smiling and waving as hundreds swarmed his motorcade. The largely maskless crowd echoing his baseless claims about widespread voter fraud, chanting this isnt over. This isnt over. Its not even close to being over. Reporter President Trump falsely tweeting this morning that biden won because of a rigged election. The reality, joe biden has cemented a president ial victory with 306 projected electoral votes, and so far the president s postelection lawsuits have gone nowhere. Thrown out by judges in four states for lack of credible evidence. On friday trump hinted at defeat. Whatever happens in the future, who knows which administration it will be, time will tell. Reporter this morning his own vaccine czar reportedly calling on the white house to call his team to make contact with joe biden, telling the new york times, i hope nothing interferes with operation warp speed. Its a matter of life and death for thousands of people. Biden spent the weekend meeting with transition advisers. He has made clear that tackling the pan dedemic is his number o priority. President trumps refusal to concede the election has caused a delay with the transition process. Biden as president elect is unable to coordinate with the Current White House Coronavirus Task force as well as multiple federal offices and agencies, dan. Rachel, thank you so much. Lets bring in abcs chief Foreign Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz who will be hosting this week later this morning. Martha, good morning. When we look at these protests this weekend and we consider joe bidens le bidens pledge, and im using his words here, to restore the soul of america. How optimistic should we be that biden can bring back a greater degree of unity in such a divided country . Its not going to be easy, dan, not only those protests yesterday and those thousands of Trump Supporters saying its not over yet. I spoke to many Trump Supporters in ohio this week who basically do not believe this election was fair. They think it was rigged. The message from President Trump is clearly resonating with many, many, many of his supporters. I think its going to be very tough. On the other hand, i have talked to Trump Supporters, ardent Trump Supporters, who believe the president should just move on. There are deep divisions in this country. You can see it everywhere you go. The divisions of course, include mask wearing. When i walk up to some of those voters and i have a mask on, they immediately think im on the other side. It is everywhere you go, dan, and joe biden is going to have a very tough time, although many do say the language he has used is healing and they hope for a better future. Speaking of moving on, as rachel just reported, the head of operation warp speed, which is in charge of getting a vaccine to all of us, is asking for access for team biden in order to ensure a smooth transition. Do you think that team trump will relent soon and allow this transition to begin in some form or fashion . I certainly hope so. Joe biden will say its not that important to get that intelligence briefing, but it really is. When you look at things, i mean, when you look back at elections past and you look at gore and bush, he didnt get those transition briefings. He only had 37 days left, bush, and that made a difference. Even the 9 11 reports say that made a difference in getting people in place. Now joe biden as we know, has been in the white house before. He will have experienced people in there, but the world has changed since joe biden was there, and he needs those briefings. He needs to keep up to date, especially on whats going on in the world. Martha raddatz, thank you very much. Great to have your analysis on a sunday morning. I want to remind everybody to tune into this week later this morning. Martha will go one on one with former trump National Security adviser john bolton. Its an exclusive interview. On the Foreign Policy ramifications of this delayed transition. Plus, she will speak exclusively with the Democratic Georgia Senate candidate jon ossoff. She will discuss his runoff election, one of two key races that will decide control of the u. S. Senate. Thats all coming up on this week. Whit . Dan, want to turn to the calls for justice over the death of a black teenager who was found dead in a sugar cane field in louisiana. For our weekend download we look for some help from someone whose specialty is helping break the cycle of negative thoughts. The professor at the university of psychology in ethan kross is author of chatter which will be released in january. Ethan, thanks for being with us. Thanks for having me. Sometimes it feels like 2020 has been a long string of bad news. You suggest people zoom out on the problem. What does that mean . When we experience a stressor our default tendency is to very narrowly focus on that experience, really in exclusion of Everything Else<\/a>. That can be problematic because when we focus narrowly on one thing, we cant focus on Everything Else<\/a> going on in our life our work, our family, our relationships. When that happens, the thing i suggest is taking a step back to get some perspective on the problem and on our lives. You also suggest something called selfcoaching, using your own name when you have a mental dialogue with yourself. I find this interesting. Explain this to us. Yeah. Well, were much better at giving advice to other people than we are to ourselves. When the problem is not happening to us, we can be more objective. What weve learned is that we can harness the power of language to think about ourselves like we are another person. Its easy to do it. You use your own name. Rather than advising yourself in the first person and i, ask yourself why is ethan feeling this way . Use your name not mine. Very important there. Who we surround ourselves with during this time is also important. Were all looking for that connection with other people. You say choose wisely. Yeah. I think its critical to be deliberate about who you seek out support from. Its easy to get stuck in just a coventing session where you focus on how awful it is, what were feeling. That may make you feel good in the moment. It doesnt allow you to get over the problem to work through it. You want to find someone to help bring you out of the situation, help give you perspective.
