Everybody is vulnerable now, and tonight its the most intense elimination yet. New claim to fame tonight on abc, we union of the snake is on the climb. While the union the snake may be on the decline. But in florida, the python is certainly not so. A few years back, the Sunshine State launched what it calls the florida python challenge, and i was given a first hand look inside the challenge and just how tricky and dangerous hunting down these apex predators can be. Theres a lot of adrenaline. So, yes, love it. Its not exactly a 9 to 5 looking for a burmese python. But for peggy and beth, hunting pythons in the depths of the delicate Florida Everglades is too important a job to neglect. The trick is to not hesitate, get right up on it, assess the situation, find out where the head is, and find out what direction its moving. And grab it by the neck. One of the largest snakes in the world, adult burmese pythons , is caught in florida. Average between six feet and nine feet in length. The largest ever captured, measuring in at 18ft long. These are large bodied animals. They have a lot of muscle. Theyre very, very strong with an appetite for mammals, birds, reptiles and even alligator eyes. This particular breed of snake is having a devastating ecological impact, wreaking havoc on the critical warm wetlands of south florida with no known predators. Their threat to other wildlife and the sensitive everglades ecosystem has left conservation honest, with little other choice. But to hunt them down. Theyre causing lots of negative impacts on our everglades ecosystem. Theyre consuming native mammals, birds, reptiles. Some of those are endangered and threatened species. And so the florida python challenge was born. Now in its 10th year, the ten day competition calls on both professionals and novices to venture out deep into the everglades swamps in the dead of night to hunt for one of the largest snakes known to man in hopes of restoring balance to the fragile habitat and of course, cashing in on more than 30,000 in prizes. The real point of the challenge is to raise awareness about Invasive Species and their negative impacts theyre having on florida. We tagged along with veteran python hunters peggy and beth, fighting off swarms of bugs, wild boars and of course, gators in search of these snakes. When you tell people im a snake hunter, whats their first reaction . Youre nuts. What makes pythons particularly difficult to eradicate is they must be hunted at night and they camouflage excellently within the backdrop of the marsh. Theyre masters at concealing themselves pythons didnt always pose the problem. They do now. In fact, florida shouldnt even be a home. The gigantic species of snake is native to southeast asia, but the exotic pet trade brought them to the other side of earth. South florida, where theyve exploded in population, an endangering this vital stretch of warm wetlands. So on this particular levy where were searching tonight, in years past, it was common to find three, four, maybe five snakes on any given night. Weve been out here for a couple of hours. We havent found any, but thats a good thing. Its a sign that the program is working. Lets go get them. Its one python at a time. It all matters. Floridas government has tried to control the python population by raising awareness with the hunting competition, but by no means is the problem solved. Florida ans are still being encouraged to catch and kill burmese pythons with no permit needed all year long. For beth and peggy, that means their work is only just getting started. You dont have any place on the on the planet thats like this. And you know, once its gone, its gone. Once its gone, its gone. Those pythons are a big, big problem. Primarily because they are eating mammals. Theyre big. They get 18ft. Wow long. They could be as wide as like a telephone pole. So they can, you know, eat deer, they can eat rabbits. They could even eat alligators. And youre from florida. Is this a common thing to be afraid of growing up . No, not necessarily. But the problem has gotten so bad that you see it there. Ten years ago, florida fish and wildlife decided we need to do something. We need the publics help and got creative by creating a python challenge. You can win by capturing the most pythons. And theres also a prize. If you catch the largest python. Just a couple of weeks ago, someone stumbled across like a 19 foot python, just the biggest prize was the str to facebook. Com. The team usually would see me coming back from work or whatever, or going to work, and they would know. They would know whats going on. I felt bad for them, you know, putting that kind of work in on and off the field. I was told that he might accidentally step away just because whats going on. And i just i couldnt let that happen. This special moment, an extraordinary act of kindness. I just felt like unbelievable. Like i felt like my hard work paid off. I was happy. I was so happy. Football is a real brotherhood. You see there the sports right . It just brings the best out in us. Our thanks there, too, with johnson, his hard work did pay off like he said it actually literally paid off.
