I can honestly say, ive been through hell and back, and thank god they didnt want me. Reporter for many in lahaina, Jumping Into The Ocean was their only escape from those thousanddegree flames devouring a mile every minute. Youre going to be okay. Reporter 19yearold noah tomkinson, along with his mother and younger brother, wading in the water for five hours. Were through the worst of it. Were going to be okay. Reporter the family of joe schilling, known locally as uncle joe, says they believe he died trying to help his neighbors. Sharing the last photos they received from him, showing homes, his, too, about to go up in flames. Oh, there isnt anybody in the family, or who knew joe, that would be surprised that he would put himself at risk to help somebody else. Aina says theyre among the 17 of 18 firefighters who lived in lahaina and lost their homes, but still, reporting to work, answering the call. Theyve been at work every single day. Theyre going in for overtime, because what else are you you cant just sit at home and cry. David those firefighters are real heroes in this. And the nightmare just got worse and worse when they report the Fire Hydrants being dry. You reported over the weekend, whit, that officials at the time said only 3 of the burn zone had been searched by cadaver dogs, you reported in earlier, but so much of the destruction, they havent made it to. Reporter over the weekend, the head of fema with the governor of hawaii examining the devastation, promising theyre in it for the long haul. I want the people of maui to know that, governor, were going to be with you every step of the way. Reporter but some saying the government response is just not fast enough. They continue to work with the governor and his team to better understand what they need, and as soon as they make a request, we get that request processed.
