We arent showing it in its entirety. The victims have been identified now as a 24yearold reporter Alison Parker and 27yearold photo journalist adam ward. To say this is a shocking occurrence is an understatement. We want to get right to justice correspondent pete williams. What do we know . Good morning, savannah. This happened at 6 45 at a shopper center 25 miles southeast of roanoke. The reporter, the one you just identified Alison Parker was killed, just turned 24. The photographer, adam ward was killed shlgs he was 27. She was broadcasting on the air interviewing the director of a local chamber of commerce about tourism when suddenly gunshots rang out apparently coming from behind where the cameraman was standing. Were not showing the entire sequence which cuts back to the anchor in the studio but eight gunshots can be heard. Both the victims are from the roanoke area and went to virginia schools and colleges. There are conflicting reports on whether the woman who was being interviewed, Vickie Gardner, how serious her injury is. She was injured in the shooting, taken to a local hospital. Police and sheriffs deputies are scouring the area for whoever fired the shots. Jeff marks of wdbj announced the deaths on the air and asked how this individual could rob the families of their lives and loves. No idea why the shoot took place though. The video may offer a clue because the camera shows a brief glimpse of who fire the shot, apparently holding a hand gun, police in new york city are sending units to television stations there. It was very early in the morning. Youd have to wonder how this gunman would even know that this reporter and this Television Crew would be at this location. This is a shopping mall, the mall would not have been open yet, so the amount of pedestrian traffic would have been extremely limited. So Law Enforcement as they consider the motive have to try to make a decision was this targeted at the reporter and her cameraman . Was this targeted against the person they were interviewing . I mean, how does this guy wind up at 6 45 this morning dressed in dark clothing with a gun in his hand and as you suggest in the video, watch the whole video, the cameraman appears to get shot first and drops the camera and takes this picture that we see of the believed shooter and then shoots one if not the other two people killing two perhaps wounding one and runs off. As you know, motive is not what Law Enforcement needs at this second. They need a picture, they need a name. They need a vehicle. They can figure out the motive later but right now this guy presents a threat to the community and to Law Enforcement should any cops stop him and try to figure out who he is and what hes up to today. Speaking of that very thing, we put the image up on the air. Its just a passing glance at the suspect we believe. Is that enough, clint . Do you think somebody could be watching that and say, that looks like someone i know . I think if you combine this, savannah and surveillance cameras that would normally be at a mall, surveillance cameras that would take pictures of cars in the parking lot and witnesses that were on the scene, we put all of this together and were going to come up with a verbal as well as pick torial picture of who this is. Weve got to put him in a vehicle. Was he by himself, with someone else . Once they get their hands on him, theyll figure out why he committed this terrible act. But right now someone shows up at this early time in the morning, probably with a semiautomatic pistol and came there to kill and he did it. Its a shopping area. A young reporter, and cameraman gunned down and killed live on the air. Virginias governor Just Announced authorities know who the gunman is. They are pursuing that person. He says that authorities believe the gunman was a disgruntled former employee who fired at the tv crew, not a case of terrorism, he says, this is a criminal case and the governor just said a few moments ago that the police are now pursuing the suspect on an interstate highway in virginia. And he says he believes an arrest is imminent. So it would appear that authorities know who it is and are closing in. They also captured an image, the cameraman who was shot, his camera managed to capture a fleeting image of the gunman and this was an important piece of evidence just as his camera is lying on its side. Thats why the picture is turned side ways, you can clearly see someone holding a hand gunfiring in a position where someone would have been to fire the shots. Breaking news out of virginia, a Television Reporter and photo journalist shot and killed as they conducted an interview live on the air. The 24yearold Alison Parker and adam ward was the photographer. They are pursuing a suspect believed to be a disgruntled coworker of the victims. And the suspect just identified to nbc news as Vester Flanigan. Pete, we have a name, weve heard about a possible pursuit. What else do we know . And you know, just a moment ago, you showed, matt, a still picture. I want to go back to that. This is an important piece of evidence. Apparently after the cameraman has been shot, as hes coming down to the ground, his camera is turned side ways and the picture is on its side. That is apparently the image of the man that Police Believe fired these shots, six to eight rounds. They believe he is still armed. Theyve been pursuing him on a couple of interstate highways. The governor of virginia says that hes a disgruntled former employee of the station and that they believe an arrest is imminent. All of this happened at about 6 45 this morning at a Shopping Center about 25 miles southeast of roanoke. A reporter was broadcasting on the air interviewing the director of a local chamber of commerce about tourism when gunshots rang out, from behind where the cameraman is stand being. Were freezing the image at this point and not showing the entire sequence on the video. But you can hear at least perhaps six to eight gunshots. Both of victims are from the roanoke area and went to schools. The woman interviewed, Vickie Gardner was injured in the shooting and she was taken to the hospital. Police immediately begin scouring the area trying to find this gunman. The general manager of the station where the reporter and photographer work, jeff marks of wdbj announced their deaths after the shooting and asked how could this individual have robbedalison and adams families of their lives and loves. You see dark pants and blue top and holding the hand gun and that is what immediately got authorities focused and they got a description of a specific kind of car, a 2009 silver mustang. They began to monitor the phone calls and the governor even said in a live radio interview a short time ago in washington that authorities were monitoring his phone calls and he called someone, the suspect had and was distraught. They are scouring the area. There have been some reports that the car was spotted at the roanoke airport. So authorities want to try to end this they say peacefully. They know the suspect is armed and they want to try to bring this to an end without further violence. Before i let you go, you say he had a beef with the station. Do we know if he had a particular negative experience with these two people he shot . No, we dont know that yet. We dont know much about him, how long he worked at the station. All we know that the governor said that hes a disgruntled former employee. Well be back to you in a little while. This could have happened to anyone and for alison, i remember talking to her and she said it was her Hometown News station and dream for her to work for wdbj and adam, both worked in the mornings. Its such a hard day for a lot of us and it was a shock to many of us when we woke up this morning, it happened just before 7 00 at bridgewater plaza, a popular summer spot here at Smith Mountain lake. Hearing both of them were killed in the attack is completely devastating. What savannah was asking, has anyone at your station or do you have any experience or any knowledge of this man were now hearing is the suspect, vester, flanigan . Reporter no, we havent. Police just stopped over there when we were doing this live shot and said they were going to release more information. What they want to do is get him in a situation, get him surrounded and then see if they can talk him out. They dont want to hurt them. They want to bring him out alive and give him every chance to do it. Right now, it appears that this threat is isolated to the immediate area where police think they have him located. And im sure at the same time this is all going on, other investigators are pouring into his background. Well, theyll be doing that, savannah, going over his background. If hes abandoned the vehicle, going through that. Theyll be going through his home, everything else, simultaneously were trying to develop motive but of course the most important thing right now is number one, to get this man into custody so that no one else gets hurt. Number two, find out if there was anyone else helping him or who was knowledgeable that these are stages two, three and four et cetera of the investigation. Stage number one is get him into custody and then build their case after that. Again this was a Live Television broadcast at 6 45 this morning. I dont know whether there would have been much advance notice that this reporter and this crew would have been at that location south of roanoke. Does this seem at the moment to you just by what youve seen on that videotape and what youre now hearing to have been an attack planned out well in advance . It seems there must have been some forethought. The idea that he would have just stumbled upon this crew at 6 45 in the morning sounds very challenging and of course, as were told by the governor of virginia, this individual is a disgruntled employee. Whether thats former or current employee, but hes someone who likely could have had access to the schedule of these individuals. Of course, the question is is this personal. Did he do this based upon one or both of the individuals working for the station . Some type of feud he may have had with them . Or in another bizarre worst case scenario, did he do this intentionally because he knew they were on air and he wanted to strike them at that moment so this terrible act that he committed would go out over the air waves. Rescuers from the ground were stymied by two dogs that were with the woman that would not let them within reach. Authorities say a man also initially fell down that cliff. And feels comfortable enough to pause and post video to not just one, but at least two social media accounts. We want to bring in our nbc news analy analyst, clint. The most important thing right now is authorities are tracking and feel they have a line on him. I mean, talk about thinking youve seen it all. Youre talking about someone who, in this very moment, wants to send out the evidence of his crime. Put it on social media. Wants to get that attention. What kind of person are we talking about here . Well, this is someone who has planned this out, as pete suggests and you and matt have looked at. Ive seen his socalled gopro video. In his hand, approaching the n victims. You see the gun, and then you see the victims in front. So this is someone who planned to do this. Who, with his television, his media background, assembled everything that he needed to put together, to come up with these live videos, and then in the midst of hot pursuit by Law Enforcement, takes the time to post both videos and tweets, providing his motive, in ju having done Something Like that. Perhaps believing that, number one, he wants to get this information out, obviously. Number two, that once in custody, he wouldnt be able to put this amount of information out. I think now, the race is between Law Enforcement to get him in custody, and social media, to bring these terrible tweets and videos down. While at the same time, hes posting them as fast as they can take them down. The News Organization saying theyve received a lengthy fax from someone claiming to be Bryce Williams which, again, is the name this person has gone by. Clint, i want to mention, without asking people to even go attempt to find these videos, one of the things that was startling to me is this alleged shooter walks up to this situation, this live broadcast, and stands there for a good ten seconds, aiming the gun back and forth, almost taunting, although i dont think the reporter could turn away from the person she was interviewing to really take great notice of this. But stands there almost calmly for ten seconds before beginning to shoot. I think part of what hes doing, matt, is setting his shot. I mean, this is someone with a background in journalism, who is knowledgeable on photojournalism. I think thats a correct term, hes taunting, but at least taunting in his own mind, and realized that the reporter is focused on the person shes talking to. The camera person is focused on those two. Nobody is looking at him. Its like hes in his own little world right there, composing his shot, getting ready to commit this horrible act. Once again, this is the power of life and death that he has in his hand. He realizes that, and hes composing his shot to reflect that in the most negative way. I want to mention, he walked right up to these people. He was a matter of two feet away from the videographer. Yeah. They could almost reach out and touch the barrel of the gun. Realize, the videographer had his back to the subject. Again, this is a tremendously cowardly act, to do Something Like that. And his purpose for going to twitter, for posting the gopro video, anything else, is to try to give justification, in his mind, to what you and i and the rest of the world would believe is an act for which there is no justification. What do you do now . Now, you have a batter. Lets say this is our batter. Lets say its finished. You would sieve it again into a cup with a spout. That way, you dont get the lumps. Dont get the lumps. The reason you put it in a cup with a spout, were going to put it into a whipped cream dispenser. Easier to get into the cups in a second. Then in well pour it in. Then youre going to charge it and shake it. Okay. Shake, shake, shake. Shake, shake,9gn shake. Then this is one of the fun things. You get a waxed cup, buty you dont put nonstick spray on it because you want it to stick slightly. Ill let you do this. Make sure you shook enough. Hes identified as vester flanagan, also known as Bryce Williams. His onair name. A disgrunted former employee at wdbj in virginia. A linked in account matching that name indicates that Bryce Williams attended San Francisco state in the early 90s. Also, nbc news is now saying that williams may have relatives here in the bay area. Police have been on his trail ever since shortly after the shooting this morning to left a photographer and a reporter dead. 24 and 27 years old respectively. Weve got breaking news on a very troubling story out of virginia. A pair of Television Journalists at a local cbs affiliate there, Allison Parker, a reporter, and photographer adam ward was shot and killed early this morning during a live broadcast. The attack captured on air. The suspect has been identified as 41yearold vester flanagan, a former reporter at that same station. Disturbingly, he appears to have filmed all of this with his own personal camera and was posting it online even as police were pursuing him this morning. Federal authorities have just confirmed that the gunman is dead, he took his own life on a virginia highway. Pete, what more can you tell us . Reporter this finally resolved itself about five hours after it happened. The shooting was at 6 45 this morning eastern time during a live broadcast. Were not going to show you the entire sequence. As youll see, the reporter was interviewing a local chamber of commerce official as the shots rang out. As the camera man went down, he caught a fleeting image of a man appearing to be holding a gun. That was vester flanagan, described as a former disgruntled employee. Law enforcement tell us they pursued him on interstate 66 on virginia. As police pulled his car over and approached it, he fired a fatal shot and killed himself. If we put that image up again of Allison Parker interviewing Vicky Gardner and that we froze before the shooting took place. What we know from viewing the videos that the suspect posted online, he was standing just a matter of two or 3 feet away from Allison Parker when he opened fire. Reporter right. And apparently they never saw him. The camera mans back would have been to the gunman. The reporter is looking at the interview guest. Neither buone of them saw what s coming. It was fascinating that the material was posted on social media, but taken down very quickly apparently at the request of Law Enforcement who wanted to deny the gunman any further credit for his crime. At least as far as twitter is concerned, he made a series of allegations against the reporter, against adam ward, the photographer and then said im going to post the video to facebook then started posting it to the twitter. While police say they were pursuing him along the highway, it appears he felt comfortable enough to pull over to the side of the road or keep driving and post video to social media sites. Reporter there was some confusion, as you would expect in the hours after the shooting. A number of different vehicles were being followed that were clearly not being driven by him. Authorities are going to have to work back now and try to figure out his movements step by step and where he was. Its obvious part of the time when he was taking all these internet postings, he was not on the move. There are reports that the girlfriend of the photo journalist, adam ward, was actually a producer for the morning newscast. It is entirely possible she was in the control room as this was all happening live on the air. Reporter a small station. You know, a lot of us have worked in similar environments. Everybody knows everybody. Pete williams, whos been covering this story since it started early this morning. Again, we now have confirmation that the gunman in this situation, vester flanagan, who went by the name on air of Bryce Williams, has killed himself along a highway in virginia after taking two lives of a reporter and a photo jurn list early this morning. Our breaking news, a bay area link to the gunman who shot and killed a tv news crew this morning in virginia. He is identified as Vester Lee Flanagan, also known as onair name Bryce Williams, a former disgruntle employee at wdbj in virginia. He worked sustained San Francisco state. Williams has relatives here in the bay area. Nbc news also says authorities were closing in on williams after a lengthy pursuit this morning and that he shot himself. But we are hearing conflicting reports about whether or not hes still alive. Now, the shooting this morning left a 24yearold female reporter and a 27yearold male photographer dead. You see them on your screen right there. They were covering a local chamber of commerce story this morning when they were shot. It appears that williams actually filmed the shooting on a gopro and later posted the video to various social media sites. That video was quickly taken down. We feel more comfortable hiding them. Reporter trey lynn, the youngest, learned of dr. Jill weible who was experimenting with laser treatment. For there to be hope for burn victims, i just felt like we needed to call and maybe something could happen from there. Reporter the sisters reached out to the doctor who, with a laser manufacturer, agreed to perform the procedure on all three of them, free of charge. Im about to get the treatment im excited. Reporter as part of the treatment, the laser fires tiny dots of heat into the scar tissue, vaporizing the scar and allowing a healthy layer of skin collagen to eventually regrow on their faces, arms and chests.
