outside scott land yard in london, thank you. President trump is drawing some criticism today for his initial tweets questioning the

Moderator Chuck Todd
and here in new york,
White House Correspondent
kristen welker. Good to have you here in new york. Thanks for having me. Great to see you. Chuck, im going to start with you. Lets talk this week and the president sitting down with his friends chuck and nancy. Chuck schumer and nancy pelosi, over the last couple of weeks to get a deal done on the debt ceiling and funding the agreement. This weekend an agreement anyway. They went back and forth on what it really was on daca, the 800,000 young people who came into the country with their parents and the president threatening to deport them and maybe now will not because of this deal. Is this the future now, chuck, or is this a fluke . Are we going to see bipartisan . Has donald trump found the way to get things done in washington . By the way, like i think you referred to it as an outbreak or a breakout. Its almost like bipartisanship is now a disease in washington its so rare. Thats sort of sad to think about. Yeah. Look, i think trying to figure out the motivation here is actually important. To figuring out is this longterm, is this shortterm . I think the president believes he at least temporarily took back control of his presidency, at least as far as washington is concerned. What do i mean by that . I think he feels as if it was mcconnell, it was ryan, frankly it was at times
Reince Priebus
that were deciding when they were going to take up certain items, and when votes were going to be, and what item they would tackle next. By doing this, by sort of short circuiting, i think he was more motivated by sending a message to ryan and mcconnell that hey, im in charge. Im going to decide when well tackle certain things. Ill cut this daca deal and i will do it much faster than you. Lets see what the long term message is. But i think that was his shortterm motivation. Kristen not just sending a message saying i gave you the reins to the place. I gave you the white house, you got the senate, you got the house, you were supposed to repeal and replace obamacare. You had seven years to do it and now seven months under my administration and you couldnt get it done so im going to go see chuck and nancy. Thats right. When you talk to white house officials they acknowledge that he felt let down, burned by leader mcconnell. House speaker paul ryan, and he doesnt like the chess game in washington. He wants to cut through that. He wants to cut deals. One white house official said thats the platform on which he ran. Cutting deals. So we saw that at work this week but part of this is practical. He wants to clear the deck. What does he want to get done . He wants tax reform. In order to do it he may need some democrats. Thats why you see him out practically campaigning for tax reform, and really targeting red state democrats. Trying to get them on board, so that he can get the votes to get it done. These deals are things that he has to deal with but he wants to go for the bigger agenda items. Chuck, the president looked very comfortable this week, whether it was dealing with
Chuck Schumer
and nancy pelosi and
Getting Positive Press Coverage
for cutting what looked like a bipartisan deal, whether he was carrying out the ceremonial aspects of the president going around florida. He even had
Hillary Clinton
back to the foil as shes been on her book tour and been all over tv this week. But some members of his base, at least the loudest members of his base in cable news and talk radio and some members of
Congress Like
steve king of iowa came out pretty strongly against the president. Does he worry about disrupting some of those people who helped him make president . I think its obvious he worries about it a little bit. Or why would he not i think thats why he explains why he threw the espn chum in the water on friday, was almost, hey, look at this over here, to some of his conservative base. I think this is going to be a fascinating test, willie. Who has more pull over this insurgent conservative base that got so animated on immigration. Donald trump, the individual, or the rush limbaughs, laura ingrahams, those folks . I think for now donald trump has more trust with those folks than the talk radio crowd does. Now that said, i do think hes got to remember, immigration is why he got to where he got. No other his hard line position on immigration is why he got that nomination. So i think hes got to be careful here on how he walks this line. Daca is something that the party i think will accept. Theyve showed theyll stick with him through thick and thin. Kristen, i want to ask you about the president s trip to new york city to come speak to the general assembly. A lot on his plate. North korea lobbed another missile over japan this week. What posture do you expect to see from the president when he stands at that podium. I think hes going to take a tough posture. This is a significant test for this president. Hell be hosting more than 100

want to hear him strike a more conciliatory tone. The big question is not only about his tone but what he can actually get done. Hes going to be having lunch with the leaders of south korea and japan to try to get them to ramp up pressure on north korea. Will it work . Thats the big question looming over all of this. The president s got chuck and nancy, ive got chuck and kristen. Ill take my two. Chuck todd, thank you very much. Big win. Vandy beating k state. Kerry Sanders was out covering the hurricane which hes done more than 60 times in his career but this one was a little different. During a live report from marco island a young disoriented dolphin washed ashore. Kerry and a
Good Samaritan held the dolphin for about 15 minutes giving it a rest before guiding it back into the sea. Then less than an hour later kerry helped another dolphin, this time an adult back to safety. A group of helpful onlookers came to carry the larger dolphin to the water. Kerry says he was in touch with dolphin experts about how to handle the animals. I was on the air. I was anchoring when this was happening over on msnbc. We were sitting back watching it play out. On live tv. Incredible. So i watched it play out in real time from the white house and i watched like this. I was so nervous. Kerrys never afraid to get his hands dirty. He saved a couple of lives. Yeah, exactly. Our first low goes to the dance moves of one of the most influential people on the planet. This is what happens when youre chinas richest man and no one tells you no anymore. The man behind the mask is jack ma. The billionaire ceo of the massive
Chinese Ecommerce Company al baba. He told his staff he wanted to do a big
Michael Jackson routine at the company party. So he did. Ma and his team of backup dancers fired up alibaba employees with a big number that included a tribute to billie jean. It ended as most
Corporate Events do with the ceo being lifted into the rafters while sitting on a motorcycle dressed as
Michael Jackson. This is the new standard. I want our bosses at nbc to do this every year. I thought the same exact thing. They need to start practicing now. Also how is he going to top himself next year . Theyre already working on that. Our next high goes to the groundskeeping this week at the white house. You may remember last month an 11yearold boy named
Frank Giaccio who cuts lawns in his virginia neighborhood wrote a letter to
President Trump, offering to cut the grass at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. Frank from
Falls Church Virginia wrote, dear mr. President , it would be my honor to mow the white house lawn for some weekend for you. Even though im own 10 id like to show the nation what young people like me are ready for. President trump accepted
Frank Giaccios offer. He showed up with his gloves, his goggles and his mower to get the job done. Frank was in the zone when
President Trump strolled outside to check on his work. The president tried to stop to compliment frank but frank kept on mowing as the president walked alongside him. Frank eventually gave a high five and a handshake but the young man had work to do and just keeps going. After he finished the job frank and his dad greg swung by the oval office to hang out with the president. I think they were surprised to get the yes when they sent the letter in. I think they were surprised by that, they were surprised when the president walked out but the moment is when frank keeps on mowing. Hes somewhere mowing a lawn right now. You hired me to mow the lawn. Dont bother me, mr. President. Our final low goes to the feeling when youve waited your whole life for that moment when you ask the woman of your dreams to marry you and you drop the ring into a pond. Lets get you out to kansas city where seth dixon is dropping to a knee to propose to ruth, his girlfriend of four years. As he goes down the 3,000 ring falls out of the box, bounces twice and slips through the boards of the bridge into the water. The look of utter shock on seths face tells the whole story. The next day, a group of their friends hopped into the pond on a search and rescue mission but couldnt find the ring. Seth and ruth still plan to get married on october 21st, and theres a go fund me page up to get them a new ring. Hopefully they will get that ring. As someone who went through the whole
Engagement Process and marriage, i felt physically pained when i saw this video. Any man whos ever proposed or any woman hes ever proposed to was freaking out when they watched that. Yes. Thank you so much. So much fun. Coming up next, a sunday sitdown with
Elizabeth Moss. She broke through as peggy olson on mad men and now shes nominated tonight for a ton of emmys. Harry smith where he belongs in a small american town covering a wonderfully odd tradition. Head over to facebook for a

San Jose Police were attempting to conduct a vehicle stop on a suspect who had a felony warrant for robbery. Police say as they were conducting the stop, shots were fired, and the suspect was hit at least once. Jacobs aunt tells us shes frustrated police have not told their family anything. We havent heard anything, no police, no investigators, no nothing, not to my sister, not to his wife. We had to find out through the streets. We spoke with one witness off camera. She told us she saw three unmarked cars pin jacobs car to the side of the street and she watched one man who was not wearing a uniform get out and confront jacob. Elizabeth Moss starring as ofred in the hand maids tale. The water cooler series that streams on hulu. Its been nominated for 13 emmys. Moss may lead as the outstanding lead actress in a drama. Its based on a 1985 dystopian novel of the same name. The show is set in modern times where the totalitarian government has taken control and women have been subjugated into slavery. One critic said recently of the actress, her very presence on a show is a guarantee of quality. Elizabeth and i got together for a sunday sitdown at one of her favorite spots, p. J. Clarks here in new york city. Thats my daughter. Reporter
Elizabeth Moss is attracted to a certain kind of role. I do look for characters that have something to overcome or a challenge or some form of dramatic art. Reporter boring is not a word anyone will apply to the dark world of the hand maids tale. Since its premiere in april it has become a cultural phenomenon. What do you think it is about the show that caught fire . The show has an incredible relevance right now obviously. I never think its one thing that makes it that good. Its the writing, the sets, the directors, the props, its costumes, its everything. Reporter some viewers and critics see a glimmer of modern reality in the shows themes. Did you see that right away or is that something thats happened after the fact in terms of some connection to the current climate . A bit of both. I think we saw the parallels early, and obviously when the election happened it became really in your face. Then since then has there been a lot of moments where we have felt, you know, you read an article and youre like, jesus, thats like from the show. Its amazing how it has become this cultural touch stone. Hillary clinton talking about it. This show has prompted important conversations about womens rights and autonomy. You will bear children for them. You try to make an enter taning television show, you know, and sometimes thats all it is, but when you can do something that you feel passionately about and also hits upon things that feel personal for you, its that much more gratifying. Moss grew up in a
Los Angeles Home filled with music. Her parents were professional musicians, but she dreamed of being a ballet dancer. At the age of 12 moss moved to new york to study at the
Lincoln Center school of american ballet. This is my old haunt. The ballerina life is one of intense commitment, especially if you want to take it to this level. Oh, yes. You have to live and breathe it. Its something that you have to want 1,000 . Do you always feel like im going to be a performer of some kind . Yeah, for sure. It would have been weird to become a doctor. My family would have been, why . What are you doing . Thats a lot of work. What happened to you . Yeah. No, they would have supported me regardless, im sure but, yeah, i just grew up in a very artistic kind of household so it was always going to be
Something Like that. You werent listening to like the pop music that the rest of us were listening to, i understand, right . Yeah, thats true. Like a little gershwin . Totally. When i was 12, gershwin was everything for me. I was such a nerd in that way. That child is going to be a star. While she was dancing, moss also tried out acting and landed a role with bette midler in the movie gypsy. Eventually moss left behind ballet to become a fulltime actress. At 17 she was chosen for the role of the president s daughter the west wing. Im starting college next month. The west wing taught me what a set is supposed to be like. So professional, funny. Everything done with a sense of humor. Who are you . Im peggy olson, the new girl. Good morning, girls. But it was her next role that would make
Elizabeth Moss the name. The audition to play a secretary about the male dominated smoking and drinking 1960s advertising world called madmen. She never dreamed she would get the job. Everyone wanted to be in it. I just remember doing an audition and loving that character right away. Just right away. My secretary doesnt respect me because i make 71 a week more than she does. Maybe we need to get you a cheaper secretary. Over seven seasons peggy olson became a fan favorite as she blazed a path from secretary to copy girl to ad executive. There may be chaos, but theres family supper at burger chef. Thats beautiful. I always wanted to approach it not as a girl in the 60s but i wanted women to identify with her regardless of what decade it was. Were going to be engaging in a role play. During her run on madmen elizabeth also starred as a detective on the acclaimed show top of the lake. The role earned her a golden globe for best actress. Youre really looking at me. Nicole kidman joins the show for the new second season. Theres an intensity and darkness to the show thats good. Yeah. But where does it go next . It feels almost more filmoire. It is more complicated. She does whatever she likes. So do i. Moss is open about her career, but she keeps her personal life personal. She was married briefly to former saturday night live star fred armison and her faith has been something of a curiosity to her fans. Moss is a member of the church of scientology. She was raised in the controversial religion whose celebrity adherence have been the focus of attention and criticism. Do you feel like you have to explain at all your faith to people or is that just something youd rather just put to the side and keep private . Im always happy to have a personal conversation with somebody off the record, but but in this kind of scenario, no. Do you ever feel like youve been judged in hollywood . Obviously your career is going well, it hasnt hurt you much. Yeah, i feel like ive done okay. I feel like its all right. But you dont feel that in hollywood . I mean, i honestly dont pay much attention to anything except what people think of my work. That work also now happens behind the camera. Elizabeth is a hands on executive producer of the hand maids tale. Every actor who has tried acting and producing shall i cant go back. Now i have control and i have say. Do you feel that way . Definitely. Definitely. Theyve created a monster. Weve got to get you in a romcom to take a deep breath. Thats what i like to watch. Is that true . I like romcoms. You dont like to be in them. Nobody wants me to be in them. Its not like sandra bullocks called and ive said no. No ones like like i would love to. Are you kidding . Lets get new a romcom. Yeah, that would be awesome. And who is elizabeths dream costar in that tvd romantic comedy . Ryan gosling is her first choice. Season two of top of the lake airs now on sundance tv and is also available on hulu. To see what i could get out of elizabeth about season two of the hand maid tale is on our website. Mindy kaeling, she invited us to the set of her show to talk about the final season of the
Mindy Project and were seeing low clouds around
San Francisco, 56 degrees. Well be clearing out the central bay by around lunch time and mostly sunny, hazy skies today. Breezy as we move into the afternoon with temperatures from
San Francisco to oakland similar to saturday, 60s to low 70s, closer to 80 in san jose, mid 80s inland around the east bay valleys. Tomorrow well see a stronger push of that marine air should lead to some cooling to start the work weeb and well see windy conditions again around thursday and temperatures climbing approaching next weekend. Its been about 60 million years since the last dinosaur romed the plains of what today is the plains of north dakota. They went extinct. They left behind a trove of bones and fossils in a place whose environment is perfect for preserving them. We have our sunday spotlight on a big dig for dinosaurs. Reporter in one of the most remote corners millions of years back in time, hunting for the most fierce predators to walk the earth. This is an area bones were washing in. The bones clint boyd finds tells the prehistory. We have a wellpreserved section that starts with these dinosaurs and continues across that extinction event. Reporter north dakota is the
Perfect Place for dinosaur hunt joers. Thats because most of the state is covered in untouched rock that is millions of years old. Start digging beneath the surface and there are dyno bones everywhere. Too many fossils for the experts to find . If we stop digging now, i would have ten years old. I was 3 or 4 and i saw my first fogs sill and i loved it. Reporter 12yearold ragan lee is hooked. The rush of adrenaline that goes through you. Reporter why the adrenaline . Like to know that there might be other stuff around it and that you just found a bone. Reporter dad john drove 14 hours from illinois to join the dig. Reporter a new crop of paleontologists unearthing the past and bringing an old world back to life for the next generation. For sunday today, bismarck, north dakota. Lucy, thank you very much. Next on sunday today harry smith takes us to a small town in montana where theres a big election underway. May the grumpiest man win. What does it require to be a sore head . Not really very much. And later, a life well lived. The woman who carried a lifelong fight to the
Supreme Court and helped win the right to marr that was invigorating youre probably wondering why ive just carved a giant wooden tiger. Well, the answer is that a real one would maul me. Ive crafted dr. Whiskers here as a visual aid to show you that should you visit the lot, carmax associates will not pounce like tigers because people dont like that. Come here to buy a car. Dr. Whiskers wont pounce. Nobody will. Im and im an emt. Erer when i get a migraine at work, its debilitating. If i call out with a migraine, thats one less ambulance to serve a community. I just dont want to let these people down. Excedrin migraine. Relief that works as hard as you do. Hi ted, glad you could join us give it a try. Mmm. Give that to me. laughing ted . This is the height of election season in one tiny montana town, and on the eve of the final vote, the candidates are making their final grumpy cases to the public. Our
Campaign Correspondent on the ground, harry smith has our sunday closer. Reporter up along route 2 in northern montana is the little town of ruddy. If you drive by, you cant miss the side. 596 nice people and one old sore head. Theyre about to elect a new sore head here, and you know us media types, we just couldnt stay away. What does it require to be a sore head . Well, not really very much. The sore head is theoretically the town grumpiest person, but in fact its usually one of the nice guys who gets picked. Bob toner himself was the sore head here himself once. He knows the considerable responsibility that goes with this elected office. Great falls tribune put ruddyard in the top 50 things to do on your bucket list. One of them was to shake hands with the old sore head in ruddyard. Really . Yeah. Eight, ten guys stopped in and had to have a picture taken. Eight or ten . Yeah. That was a big deal. Stop the influx. Eight or ten more than weve had in the last couple weeks. Not unlike other american elections, money plays a big role here. To vote, you put a dollar in a coffee can with the candidates name and picture on it. The money raised supports the towns senior center. I know myself well enough to know that i have the potential to be a sore head. You might have to stay in town for a while to really drum up enough money to be in contention, but wed enjoy your participation. On a perfect late summer evening, all of the candidates but one showed up for a pot luck picnic. Do you want to be elected, sir . Well, theres better candidates than me. Yeah. More deserving, i guess. Nicer or sorer . I dont like none of them really but theyre all okay. There were no stump speeches. They told me all you had to do was show up. But the homemade food thats a frog eye salad. Whats a frog eye salad. Was truly inspirational. Ive made this observation from years in the news business. Master of the obvious. No women candidates. Does that mean no woman is a sore head . It means we have some smart men in our community. Folks in ruddyard take that
Community Spirit thing to heart. They even invited me into the election pool. Then you get to be a nomination for the old sore head. Still, there was the matter of residency, and they figured that out, too. Wow. This is kind of the fancy end of town out here. You get down to the end of the street, you take a left. There you go. An outhouse. I like it. They joke about just how much sense this might make. Get you into the residency here in town. If that allows me to qualify it wouldnt take too much. Clearly not. And harry smith now live. So the polls close tomorrow. Yeah. Last day of voed iting. This is decidedly less contentious than the most recent election. Pretty tough. Smart money in rudyard is on bob christensen. Hes 80. Hes the only one that didnt show up at the
Big Convention there. Hes 80 years old. He was out zip lining that day. Wow. So the smart money is on bob. For a great cause. That senior center. Needs all that money. Needs all that money. And heres the other thing, you bought you stop in rudyard, theres stuff to do there. Theres a lot of stuff to do there. If you go across the street from the tire shop, theres a car museum. You have to stop at the tire shop to get keys to get into the car museum and you saw the story from north dakota. Sure. They have their own
Dinosaur Museum there. They dig them up in everybodys backyard. Town of 500 or so people population less than that. Less now . Got to update that sign. Thats it. Harry smith, good luck, my friend. Good to see you. May the best sore head win. You grump. This week we highlight another life well lived. Ee did winds sore was engaged to her future wife for 40 years because they couldnt legally be married in the united states. Her lifelong fight as a gay rights activist culminated in the 2013
Court Decision that made her an icon. When thea died in 2009, windsor did not qualify for the spousal exemption on estate tax because the state did not recognize her as a spouse so she sued and eventually won new rights for americans in samesex marriages. President obama called to congratulate her. Edies win laid the groundwork for a land mark
Supreme Court decision two years later that recognized the constitutional right of same sex couples to marry anywhere in america. She was born in philadelphia. She got a masters in applied mathematics from
New York University and was hired in 1958 as a programmer by ibm. In 1967 edie and thea were quietly engaged marking their promise to marry not with a ring but with a less conspicuous diamond broach.
