His parents are searching for answers after his body was found insided a park near their home in lake forest, california. We just want to see resolution. Authorities say last week bernstein drove to the park late at night. According to a search warrant affidavit obtained we the Orange County register, not ver fwied by nbc news before it was sealed, investigators spoke to that friend who said just before midnight he walked into the park himself. The unidentified friend told authorities he waited about an hour and tried to can contacts bernstein. Then at 1 00 a. M. Drove to his girlfriends house before returning to the park after burnstein had not responded. Two days after his disappearance,ing detectives noticed the friends hands had several scratches and abragszs which he said were from a fight club. Also there was dirt under the fingernails. According to the newspapers report on the affidavit, during another interview, investigators noticed every door the friend had to touch on the way out of the building, he pulled his jacket over his hand to prevent his hand and fingers from touching any part of the doors. We have interviewed that friend several times. That person is not in custody. Reporter investigators say bernstein was probably killed the night he disappeared but woorcht s wouldnt say how he died. We are covering the event because of the sense of irony that many might see. Senator dick durbin of illinois was in that meeting and offered his account of what was said. We want to play that for you. Senator graham made his presentation, the president interrupted him several times with questions, and in the course of his comments said things which were hatefilled, v vile and racist. But i cannot believe that in the history of the white house and that oval office any president has ever spoken the words that i personally heard our president speak yesterday. Strong words from senator dick durbin this morning in a gathering in the hallway with reporters. I want to bring in Peter Alexander as well as chuck todd, moderator of meet the press. Peter, first to you, the president put out a series of tweets today that seemed to suggest he didnt use that particular word that now has been widely quoted and i think were all familiar with. I think thats exactly right, lester. At best you can describe this as a vague denial, saying he didnt use the language that he said to have used. You heard from dick durbin, one of seven lawmakers in the room at the time. Here is one of the tweets the president posted today, never said anything derogatory about haitians other than haiti is obviously a poor and troubled country, never said take them out, made up by dems, i have a wonderful relationship with haitians. Probably should record future meetings. Unfortunately no trust. That has certainly not been enough to satisfy the leaders of african nations, not to mention some of the officials that represent haiti, the ambassador of the United States from haiti fiercely condemning the president s remarks saying he was not only misinformed, but basically that he is miseducated. The president facing fierce criticism not just for this comment, but because it fits a wider pattern now, dating back to what sort of birth his entire political effort in life, the birtherism process, questioning the citizenship of barack obama, sul suggesting he was born not in the United States, but in kenya. He made comments critical of mexican immigrants saying many were racist. The bottom line, the big picture here is this complicates this white houses effort to try to get an immigration deal, just days ago there appeared to be some warming between republicans and democrats with the deadline now looming for those nearly 800,000 young and undocumented immigrants or dreamers to try to come to some deal. This makes it a lot tougher for the white house because democrats are less inclined to help out in any way. Peter, let me bring in chuck now. How many times have we done this, something several weeks ago, talking about the pocahontas remarks at a moment that was honoring navajo code talkers and now this. Will this be another case where two days from now this will be forgotten . Well, look, on one hand, it is possible that, yes, we move on to another controversy or another story that he may do. Lets not pretend he hasnt paid a price for his divisiveness. He is sitting at 35 job rating. You have republicans, a record high, of republicans deciding not to run for reelection now that the calendar has flipped from 17 to 18, afraid of Donald Trumps brand costing them their own political careers so they would rather decide theyre ending before the voters do. So, you know, it is sort of a as a producer of mine said, you go bankrupt slowly, never quickly, it will feel quick when it finally happens. You can always look back and say, how did we get here, we got here over a slow period of time. It is not the the comment is shocking. Only because were shocked at the president said it. The comment is not shocking when you say it is donald trump that said it because look at what he said on the record. Look what he has said what he has confirmed that he has said on twitter. It is his history of this. You can make an argument that the more disgusting thing he said was him complaining there wasnt enough immigrants from norway coming into the can country, explicitly saying he views almost looks at everything through the prism of race and color of someones skin. I think this is one of those things that, yes, it will, quote unquote move on as a news cycle, but this continues to hurt the Republican Party longterm, continues to erode the president s own ability to essentially be a moral authority in this country. We have a president of the United States, lester, that has no moral authority in this country. Thats striking and were only at the not even at the end of year one.
