Soledad so, david, when you were thinking about your transition, what was what was the most challenging thing . David when i got out in 2005, i was on the phone with unemployment in virginia, and i applied to a Government Agency at the time. And i remember they said, your clearance went through. Your security clearance went through. You start next monday. U beere . To do, had zero clue what i was going to do. Es. While we were on active duty but we didnt have anything to tell us this is where you need to go to do this and this is where you can find a job, and this is how you do a resume. It was really a signoff sheet that we didnt go through any type of formal training for that for the transition phase. And they do all of this and more. Its been a blessing. Soledad how did your Mental Health issues affect your anxiety about a job hunt . Heaning with posttraumatic stress for you. David right. So before we deployed, there was a buddy of mine committed suicide. After we deployed, another bar buddy of mine committed suicide. So i found myself with a pistol in my mouth, right . And i was a drunk. And then one of my friends who i served with went to our leadership and said, im having these nightmar a occurred over there. Can you help me out . And they removed his weapon and they put a broomstick in his hand, and so he was a janitor for the squadron. So that resonated for a lot of us, and it goes to what you just talked about. Soledad keep your mouth shut. Dont tell anybody. David thats right. So you mentioned the Mental Health. You just bundle it in. Soledad im not a Mental Health professional, but im fairly confident bundling it in and sucking it up it sounds like exactly the worst thing you can do. How does what youre doing help ultimately with what we know is really an epidemic, which is suicide . Mike i, you know, i i would answer that with the meaning and purpose. We dont talk enough about the fact that, you know, the past 17 years of war this is really the this countrys first test of the allvolunteer military, in up to this point, you could look around, and in almost every family, you had somebody impacted by this countrys wars. And what h is,appensess than 1 of the population has served in uniform since 9 11, and folks come home and they feel anonymous. You know, as recently as in the last few months, weve lost folks in in afghanistan, and those deaths arent even reported. Soledad the media does not even bother. Like, its not even ugh. Mike that really does weigh, i think, on those who have served, that that sense that, for lack of a better way of putting it, nobodys paying attention. Soledad so how do you feel that your life has changed through this program . And i know you rave about it, but youre now a businessman. You run a nonprofit and a forprofit business, and i think someone would say, well, youve had all this incredible military clhad l these amazing what was this Organization Able to do that has made the transition to allow you to really leverage those skills . So, going back to this, going back to what mike said is a purpose. I was able to focus and enhance my leadership skills from the military, and apply that to help others that were similar or worse than me and what i experienced, and that really is where the rubber meets the road, is the purpose. We now have a purpose. Soledad mike haynie, david sharpe, darby. Good job. Yes, good job. Thanks, gentlemen. Really appreciate the conversation. Mike thank you so much. David thank you, soledad. What may start as an innocent online conversation with a stranger can lead to something much worse including stalking, revenge porn, and even rape. According to a new study, one in eight americans, mostly women, say they have been the victim of what is called nonconsensual pornography. Unfortunately, many of the antistalking laws were created before the social media age and offer little help for victims. Carrie goldberg is trying to change that. Shes a lawyer and the author of a new book, nobodys victim fighting stalkers, psychos, pervs, and trolls. I know that your own path to becoming a lawyer, and helping people who are victims is actually due to your own ust find of sweptin 2013, i wasi me off my feet. We met online, and wed developed a real connection before meeting. And as soon as we did, it was just like kind of an instamarriage. And very quickly, though, it kind of went from being oh hes so obsessed with me to like scary obsession. And after about four months, i ended the relationship. And he basically told me that he was going to spend the rest of his life destroying mine. You know, he would send me messages saying that hed hired people to come rape me. And i went to the police, and they told me go to family court. I went to family court, and thet amendment problem. Carrie its o post pictures of my genitals the internet . Thats insane. And so it was it was a real atre law called the Communications Decency act to a large degree allows some of this to happen. Explain to people what the Communications Decency act is. Carrie the Communications Decency act is this obscure little law that went into effect in 1996, and basically it says that Internet Companies cannot be held liable for content that their users post. And that includes big companies. Like, a lot of the harassment and revenge porn that we deal with happens on on facebook, on instagram, on twitter, and those companies have no incentive to help, because they cant be held accountable if they dont. Soledad are states doing a better job than the federal government in in managing some of these issues . Ainlnot, in ters of holding Tech Companies they dont have the autrirumps anything that states can do. But states have kind of steppede porn. Five years ago, we only had a few states that had revenge porn laws, and now we have like 46. And we we still dont have a federal law, but thats thats an area that states have been stepping up. Soledad what do you think happens . I mean, where does this end . Do you think therell be a point where people dont have all their personal data released in a harassing way . Carrie i think we need we need more laws. We need more cuttingedge court cases. Like ours against grindr. I mean, we need to just be challenging the system, and making demands, and shutting down all the propaganda that says that, you know, if we have any laws that protect privacy and protect people from being harassed, that suddenly its go thats thats the propaganda were up against. Soledad the book is called nobodys victim fighting psychos, stalkers, pervsan trolls. Soledad appreciate it. Announcer when we come back, from the hit series the wire to the hottest show on broadway. Since its release in 1960, it has sold more than 50 million copies, and youd be hardpressed to find someone who doesnt know the smalltown client tom robinson, a black handyman who is falsely accused of raping a white woman. The book has been taught in countless classrooms in america, and provoked countless conversations about race and social justice. To kill a mockingbird won a pulitzer prize, spawned an oscarwinning movie, and is now the highestgrossing American Play on broadway. Gbenga akinnagbe stars as tom robinson. I recently spoke to him in new york about the Lasting Impact of this story. Its so nice to have you to gbenga thank you for having soledad my pleasure. So why say yes . Because im sure at some point an agent called you and said, theres this play, and its a classic. What was it about this that appealed to you . Gbenga i think the fact that this book speaks to so many americans. People can empathize with, that, like, that help get people across to the other side, as far as anoer view. And then of course, the people involved aaron sorkin, scott rudin. Soledad the boldface names of pulling off a production. Gbenga yes, yes. Soledad and now its the highestgrossing gbenga thats crazy, yes. Soledad no pressure. Gbenga yeah, yeah. Soledad aaron sorkin has kind of changed its sort of his version of the book. How has he changed the characters a little bit, or specifically your character . Gbenga i would say that. I mean first of all, hes given the black characters more agency in the play than they do thae film. Soledad what do you mean by that, agency . Gbenga you see his motivations, first of all, and then you see that hes motivated by wanting to somehow at some point be reunited with his family. You see calpurnia, who pushes back against atticus and his thoughts about his town, about how how good these people are, and how theyll do the right thing in the end. She gives a different point of view, and very openly and plainly to him. Yeah, so you dont you dont get that at all in the book or the film. And one of the things that was important to aaron well, and bart when we first started, was to kind of get rid of this idea of the white savior, which is heavy throughout the books soledad or even the white prism, right . Its always sort of like its this persons point of view impacting the story, even though the story really centers on you your character. Gbenga exactly, you have this thing that happens with this black man, and its in and the story is told about, like, how it affects this white family, through the eyes of this little white girl. But in addition to that, you have these black characters, you know, contributing to their own story. Soledad why do you think it still resonates today, all these many years later . My producer, who went to see it, said that a grown man whos sitting next to her started sobbing. She kindly offered a tissue, and he took her hand instead, and then hugged her at the end of the play. White guy. Shes black. Like, thats unusual for a play, right, to have people sobbing in each others arms because theres clearly something that theyre trying to express to each other. Gbenga i think the play is more than a play, especially now. This has always been a racist, misogynistic country, but now weve we have those those elements institutionalized in our structures. But theres theres a schism, i think, thats only grown greater over the years, where where the reality for so many people, which we cant ignore anymore, or are having a harder time than what we tell ourselves. And when were faced with ourselves, when were faced with what our nation is, its it can be its very painful to see. T right thing, even if we know were licked before we start. We even if we know that we still decide to do the right thing for someone else, this is how beautiful we can be as human beings, or eventually as a nation. Soledad the nword is used nonstop in this play, and im curious, as the main black actor in the play, does that wear you down a little bit, or is it just like, hey, listen, this is acting, and everyones acting, and its just part of the gig. Gbenga its its both. Its both. I mean, the things that are ha storylines, are very real. And so the the the lines i wont lie. The lines blur a lot. And so, that its difficult, sometimes. But its also, i think, important. I love doing this. Its been a gift to do this play, and to do this interrogation on stage with with the cast that im doing it with. Soledad gbenga, nice to see you. Gbenga thank you so much. Thank you for having me. Announcer coming up next, home safe home. Which state just joined to fight to protect the housing rights of undocumented immigrants. Plus, washington d. C. Is built on americas history. Now, a new app is making sure native american stories are included. Soledad now to a weekly feature we like to call were paying attention even if youre too busy. Illinois is now the second state in the country to pass a law protecting undocumented immigrants from losing their homes based on their legal status. Its called the immigrant tenant protection act. The law stops landlords from essentially blackmailing tenants into silence. Landlords have threatened to evict immigrants and discloseeir under the new law, tenants can sue landlords, who could face fines of up to 2000 dollars for each violation. Illinois governor j. B. Pritzker, a democrat, says he signed the law in response to president trumps new policy that could keep migrant families in Detention Centers for an indefinite amount of time. California was the first state to pass a similar law, in 2017. That law prohibits landlords from evicting people for not passing a newlyrequired credit check or providing a valid Social Security number. Announcer when we r you know who ira hayes is .
