Reporter its the invisible indoor air pollutant that no one is talking about. Our Investigative Unit has been looking into air quality and ventilation in classrooms. What we found may surprise you. Whether you are at home or work, the sound of it turning on can be sweet relief. In the summer it keeps you cool. In the winter it keeps you warm. A heating, ventilation and airconditioning unit known as hvac. Its something many of us cant do without. But in some schools around the state, hvacs could be putting Childrens Health at risk by trapping co2 in classrooms. Its been an issue for more than a decade. Studies going as far back as 2004 show how poor ventilation impacts students health. But this new study didnt look at old hvac systems. It only looked at new ones. And it turns out many of them are not operating how they should, saying some may be installed or programmed improperly. We were not expecting it. Reporter one of the lead researchers for the study looked at co2 levels in 140 classrooms across california. She says 85 had rates well above the 1000 parts per million by californias Building Code and 3 of the 11 schools where they installed co2 monitors were here in the bay area. There is a strong association. Reporter many of the schools they studied were shocked by the findings and think the score of the issue is a lack of awareness. But students and staff in one South Bay School district have taken notice. I notice that the teacher closes the door, it gets stuffy in the room. It gets hot and stuffy and students tend to want to sleep more. They put their heads down or close their eyes and theyre in general not as attentive in that classroom. Reporter a senior says they are working with stanfords virtual Design Construction program to research and understand the impact of co2 on students across the bay area. When the doors open i feel people are more active. They talk more, participate more. Theyre just more awake in general. Reporter thankfully for emily and her class rights, the director of maintenance for the School District has been working to address the issue. Besides updating current controls that are outdated, we want to provide a healthier environment for heating to help improve their achievement and provide a healthier environment for them to thrive in. Reporter roger oversees facilities for the largest high School District in northern california. For the last year he and his staff have been installing programmable Service Desks that allow them to remotely model and adjust ventilation levels if they get too high. Were allowed 90 days. Reporter so the initial monitoring showed many classrooms around the 12 or 1300 range for co2. In rare cases levels maxed out at 2000. But the technology has allowed them to address each classroom on a casebycase basis as they install the thermostat. It is like in a way if you get enough co2 in the room you are intoxicated in a way. You cant think as clearly or logically. You cant control your temper and your frustrations as much as you normally would be able to. I dont care how great the teacher is or how excited the student is, if that facility and that air quality is not where it should be, the learning is not going to happen.
