The patient, a man in his 70s who has been hospitalized for three weeks after being exposed on the grand princess. Santa clara county continues to see the most cases. The Santa Clara Convention center is turned in to a makeshift hospital. We need the beds and space to handle the patients. A tv Pool Reporter was allowed inside, damian joining us from san jose. Damian, this is for the people who have been exposed but that are not really that sick, dont have to be in a hospital. That is correct. They are positive for coronavirus, and so, they are there at the Santa Clara Convention center or will be there. It was fascinating and erie at the same time, we are talking about 250 beds inside the Convention Center as the county braces itself for next week. Every Second Counts as federal, state and local workers are rushing to get the Santa Clara Convention center ready for covid19 patients. We will be separating males and females. Adults only. Today the 146 airlift unit of the National Guard will spend 12 hours setting up the hospital. In between the major roads here, we would have nursing stations. Where charting can occur. Where they will have various medical supplies that they may need to provide the care. The hospital will be for patients who are covid positive and need to stay quarantined and are well enough to leave the hospital. Specifically people that may not have a safe, effective place to isolate for the rest of their ordered quarantine. Its a low acuity setting. There are a set of medical supplies that come with the federal medical station. It does include things like ivs, in the event that a patient needs that. We would not expect most patients here to need that level. The goal to free up the hospital beds for the sickest patients. The patients here dont have to practice social distancing since they will all be covid positive. We expect that patients may be here for as many as two, sometimes three weeks before they are safe to again be around others. And that National Guard unit is based out of channel island. The leaders here in the county say that the trajectory of the coronavirus is not dictated by the virus itself, its people who refuse to isolate. They are the ones who are spiking up the curve. We are live in the south bay. Nbc bay area. Thank you. San matteo county, making a major announcement and change that impacts people from other counties as well. As of 6 00 p. In san francisco, similar measures. Parking lots in several beaches and open space areas are closed and barricaded. That includes parking lots for the marina green. Ocean beach and the mayor said they dont want to get to the point where they are closing the parks but they will do it if needed. To have picnics and to have wine parties. If you want to get fresh air, do so and maintain social distance. Like she said, no basketball, tennis matches and public courts or group picnics. Well, govern er newsom prohibited land lords from evicting tenants from paying rent but because of the whole Current Crisis and enforcing any eviction order until the end of may. We talked to tenants and the attorneys who say, the order does not go far enough. Some cities had done this already. Reporter yeah, that is right, and tenants were hoping for more time to pay rent. As attorneys tell us, the governors order extends the amount of time for the legal process. But not the time tenants have to pay rent. Today,a little relief for renters. Caught in the covid19 crisis. With governor gavin newsome, issuing a statewide order, banning evictions for renters. So for tenants who may 31st, there will be no eviction proceedings. There will be no enforcement as it relates to your inability to pay for covid19. Good news for some, and for carly angel, a resident at brookdale senior living, she was hoping for more room to breathe. In my case, lung problems where i have to use oxygen at night and my doctor absolutely does not want me to move to a new community. Today was the last day that the 73yearold and other residents were supposed to stay after management sent them eviction notices in january. The Public Health crisis delayed the evictions. But ultimately, wont change things. This order only pertains to evictions for nonpayment of rent. Taent rights attorney said that tenants like carly received an eviction notice for reasons other than nonpayment of rent. The governors order will not help them or anyone. What he did now will not protect any tenants. I will extend the time for the legal will process. But wont give renters even ones impacted by covid19 any more time to pay rent. Now the fear they say, tenants may think its a moratorium on all types of evictions, when its not. And renters should look towards their City Ordinances for more help. We are live in san francisco. Okay, thank you, lili, lets talk about something had that is tough and stressful right now. A lot of People Grocery shopping has become a challenge. A chor, and now, some stores are trying to ease the anxiety about if you can find what you need and how you can avoid the crowds. The owners of the Grocery Store outlet in Pleasant Hill is going on Facebook Live twice a day. He gives the shoppers a behind the scenes look of what they have in stock and what they dont have. They are urging you to call the store and ask when the crowds are lighter. The biggest message i have, dont panic. We have product and that keeps me pumped up and motivated. I feel like, im giving back to my community. And we are all going to get through this. Some other advice, be sure to wipe down your shopping cart basket before you use it, especially the handle. Most Grocery Stores have those wipes. If you see a crowded aisle, skip it and wait for the people to leave and move to another one. That makes sense. Asign one person in the family be in charge of doing the shopping. Theres a second test in the works for certain patients. Lets bring in janel lempt wang, who joins us with this information. Janelle. Yeah, raj, this test is for patients who are not really showing any symptoms, but they have the virus, which means they have the antibody to help fight the virus. I found out more from dr. John torres. This is spreading throughout the country and so, theres a lot of people that are what we call asymptomatic, what you see is the tip of the iceberg, under the water, 2 3 of people dont know they have it. Their symptoms are so mild or they are not showing any symptoms that show the disease. They are building antibodies. So, they can tell within a few minutes whether you have had it over the past few weeks, if you have, you have imimmunity to it now and your blood can help other patients out. Dr. Torres said that the test will come out in the next few weeks or months and will paint a more accurate picture of where the cases are and where we can move resources to get this virus under control. So, yeah, a lot of helpful information. I will have more with him coming up at 7 00. Good information. Thank you. We will see you shortly. Up next at 6 00. If i had the funding right now, i would start probably in the next couple of weeks already four different projects we have in the works. The doctor said that a key to stopping the spread of the virus is understanding how it attaches to a human cell. Protein spikes on the virus dock on the cell, working like a key. Her team is ready to search search for a way to block the virus if they are given the resources to do it. You can interrupt that if you just make sure that the key doesnt fit the lock. And thats what we could be doing. The small molecules blocking that part. For example, this robotic Lab Assistant can quickly and accurately test 10s of thousands of potential drugs. See which one may prove effective at stopping covid19. The doctor cites another battle front for research, controlling the patients imimmune response to the virus. Scientists have discovered that some seriously ill patients have few virus cells left in their bodies. She said doctors can save lives by learning how to switch off parts of the immune system. Sometimes we need the immune system to clear the virus, but then sometimes its a over reaction, it will go crazy and destroy your lung tissue. Most scientists want to make a difference and want to try to contribute to a solution, asap, really, everybody is chomping at the bit to make this happen. But their eagerness to solve the problems is hampered by a federal funding process that can take months while the spread of the pandemic wont wait. If you have to go through accelerated reviews that could take up to 60 days, which is just too long. Every day is of the essence right now in order to develop something. The National Science foundation has already approved 20 Different Research projects focused on covid19, including ten Rapid Response grants worth more than 1. 5 million.
