Tonight a grim revelation from the state of new york. Within the past day, 562 people died there. Thats more than almost the entire month of march. Health care workers are now calling Emergency Rooms battle zones. We are afraid for our patients. We are afraid for our families. Were afraid for our lives. Tonight new York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed an executive order allowing the state and the National Guard to take ventilators and protective equipment from hospitals that have too many and redistribute them to those which need it most. Now, in hardhit Santa Clara County, an eerie addition to a San Jose Hospital thats basing for a predicted surge in patients. What youre looking at is a large refrigerator. It is setting next to Regional Medical center on North Jackson avenue. A source with the Hospital System tells us tonight that the icebox is there purely as a precaution in case the death toll rises to the level of new yorks. Right now they say nothing is inside. New developments tonight on the bay areas extended shelter at home. All nine counties have now extended orders to stay at home unless you are part of an essential business or service. The last three counties to join the extension were sonoma, napa, and solano. The stayathome order now runs until the beginning of may. And take a look at the latest numbers. Santa clara county added 75 new cases today for a total of 1,094. San francisco up 47 cases today, now just under 500. Statewide, we are at more than 12,000 confirmed cases. Nationwide, 239,000. Less than 24 hours after Bay Area Health leaders called on us here to wear Face Coverings, the cdc is giving the same directive to the entire nation. Top Health Officials say its a voluntary measure to try and flatten the curve. The cdc says you should not use a medicalgrade mask. You should save those for health care workers. Now this new recommendation to cover your nose and mouth when you head out into public comes as leaders are weighing new data about the way this contagion is spread. Some people have already started wearing their masks on their way to the Grocery Store, while pedaling through the neighborhood, even driving their cars. Tonight President Trump recommending everyone should have one when they leave their house. The cdc is advising the use of nonmedical cloth Face Covering as an additional voluntary Public Health measure. Here you are. Thank you so much. Well, there is a new ad campaign under way from nearly 30 of the nations largest Public Health departments, including Santa Clara County. The Health Leaders published an open letter in several of the countrys top newspapers. It reads in part, we know it is hard. We know that connection to and within our communities are some of the best things about our daytoday lives. But for now staying physically apart is the absolute best thing we can do to our friends, our family, and our neighbors. The difference this will make will save lives. Well, a mass isolation and quarantine order is in effect in Contra Costa County. The Health Director says anyone with covid19 and anyone who has come in contact with the virus needs to selfisolate. That order follows a massive outbreak at a Skilled Nursing facility. 27 people have tested positive for the deadly virus there. Two of those people have been hospitalized. Nbc bay areas cheryl hurd is live in orinda for us with the very latest on whats happening there and that mass isolation order. Reporter thats right, jessica. This is a very serious situation here at this facility. It all started when two Staff Members got sick and came down with the virus. Soon after that, two patients tested positive. Thats when the county stepped in and said everyone here needs to be tested. Tonight Staff Members are tending to residents while those infected with the deadly virus are sheltering in place. Viruses dont have wings and they dont have legs. Reporter thats why Contra Costa Countys Health Officials say the nearly two dozen people who tested positive for the virus here and who are in stable condition arent leaving the orinda care center. Our goal here is to really isolate in place. That is very kirconsistent with directives. Reporter two of the 27 people who came down with the virus here are being treated at local hospitals. This does not come as a surprise. This is something weve been worried about and preparing for for quite some time. Reporter as the county continues to prepare, it is also busy dealing with the rising number of people who are getting infected. As of friday, 307 Contra Costa County residents have tested positive for covid19, and 5 people have died from the virus. The countys mass isolation order now requires that covidpositive individuals without symptoms must isolate for seven days. Those with symptoms have to tack on an extra week for when their symptoms started. Our primary known cases and their close contacts. Reporter it is worth noting that 14 people tested negative for the virus. They are still working and being isolated from those who tested positive. The cdc says they are Healthy People from Holland Americas cruise ship in florida. Their voyage took a frightening turn when passengers on board tested positive for the virus and some died. Jean elle is live at sfo where she talked to passengers now on their way home. Jean . Reporter janelle, 250 cruise passengers landed here at sfo tonight. The cdc says they were all screened and did not have symptoms of coronavirus before they got on that airplane in florida today. The passengers we talked to tonight say after days of uncertainty about when ty bener masks, passengers who were isolated on the cruise ship arrive at sfo. Were here. Were safe. But i never had any worry about my life at all. Reporter judy lazarus said when passengers starting getting sick while on board in south america, the captain did a good job isolating people. We were safer on the cruise ship than we were on land because we only had a few people that got the virus. Reporter more than 1,000 passengers had been on the zandaam since march 7th. During the cruise, nine passengers tested positive for covid19. Four people died. The ship was in limbo for weeks because south american ports would not allow it to dock and it took several days for Holland America to convince florida officials to let it in. And that was not a good thing. So there was talk about what we were going to do if they werent going to let us dock because we were asymptomatic at this point, and were citizens. Reporter Chris Robinson was one of many healthy zaandam passengers transferred to the rotterdam for isolation. Awful. Like we saw nobody. Reporter after days of uncertainty, 14 critically ill passengers were sent to florida hospitals while those with no coronavirus symptoms finally were allowed to leave. Now, some of the passengers flew home tonight. Others are staying in hotels here in the bay area tonight and will fly out tomorrow. But senior investigator Stephen Stock found it has a huge hole in it. Some 20 million workers are left out. Reporter maria chavez and anna martinez, both immigrants from el salvador have worked at mcdonalds in san jose for years. They get three paid sick days a year. Translator after that, if were sick and we stay home, we dont get paid. Reporter so if youre sick, you feel like you have to come to work . Translator i have to come to work however i am, with a fever, with a cough. I have to come to work. Reporter martinez says she came down with a fever a week ago, stayed home for two days, but then went back to work, still with a fever. Translator i worry because i work in the kitchen. Im a cook, and i also serve customers in the drivethrough. Its been a waking nightmare. Reporter this nurse asked to remain anonymous for fear of losing her job. She works at kaiser, and she told us that management pressures nurses to work while sick. Its basically we know youre sick, but come into work anyway, and theres a lot of intimidation for people that do call out sick. Reporter in a survey on paid sick leave by sociologists at uc berkeley and ucsf, it found that at 91 large u. S. Companies, 53 of the workers reported they dont get paid sick leave. In the food industry, nearly 75 of the workers said they dont get sick leave pay. Theyre the lowest paid or the ones least likely to have benefits. Reporter elise gold says the recent legislation that requires paid sick leave exempts the largest companies, those with 500 employees or more, which leaves about 7 million workers out of luck. The law also does not cover Small Businesses with fewer than 50 workers, leaving out millions more. When they dont have paid sick days, then theyre not likely to be able to take time off if they get sick or their kids get sick or they might have been exposed to this virus at this time. So then they go to work, and they can infect their coworkers. They can infect their customers. I think the reality is that our folks are between a rock and a hard place. Reporter luke wake is senior staff attorney for the National Federation of independent businesses. He says many Small Business owners simply cant afford to leave. Why shouldnt these businesses pay for sick leave . Otherwise it encourages workers to come to work sick. First of all, you have to protect the health of your employees and your workforce and the public as a whole. Unfortunately its going to have to be a consideration. If they realize theyre not going to be able to pay the bills, they have no choice but to close or to do layoffs. Reporter maria chavez told us she was laid off at her job at mcdonalds one day after speaking to us. Management at that restaurant did not return our request to find out why. Stanford researchers are working to find out just how many people in Santa Clara County have recovered from covid19 even if they didnt know they ever had it. Researchers set up three drivethrough testing spots in the south bay for this antibody study including this site in los gat gatos, the goal to get a more accurate number of how many people have come down with the virus because many people dont have symptoms. This once again will be bringing back some rainfall, heavy at times through the next 48 hours. The way this will play out is it will bring down colder air and sierra snow. By 5 30 in the morning the bulk of it is well off to the north. Then it will rapidly start to push to the south right around 7 30 in the morning with the best chance of that rain right over marin, napa and sonoma counties. Then as we move through about 10 30 in the morning, it will start to push into con
