Drivers to slow down, especially with all these people out on the roadway. To be clear, oaklands slow streets is not to close any city streets, rather to limit traffic to locals only on certain residential streets and quarters. That means if youre driving in your own neighborhood, maybe getting a delivery to your home, those are okay, that is local only. This will apply to 74 miles of oakland streets, as you mentioned. Thats 10 of the citys roadways. Were taking this opportunity to try some new things. Oaklanders are very anxious right now, and really trying hard to adjust to a radically different reality. And we hope that this slow streets movement will help give some joy, some recreation, some exercise, in a safe and physically sdadistanced way to oakland families throughout the city. Reporter if you drive on a slow street without knowing it, you will not get a ticket at this point. This is an education campaign. But a city councilman is urging the sheriff to crack down on speeding and on the sideshows that have not let up during the shelter at home time. The extra space is not to create more space for you to recreate. Maybe get a pickup soccer game or pickup basketball game, or to gather. It really is intended to give more space to people who are coming and going from work and trying to get out to exercise. Watch out for those folks, there are more of them on the roadway. Damian, how is it looking out there now . Reporter marcus, its not as busy as it was yesterday at the cathedral of faith. Here we are at st. Lucys parish in campbell. They still have a lot of food boxes left. It looks like the cars that were lined up have come and gone with a couple of food boxes here. Many people were lined up early, since before 8 00 a. M. This morning. And the giving so far continues, volunteers here are waiting for folks who drive up. This food giveaway is put on by catholic charters and they alternate parishes day to day. Here theyre expecting 400 people. They know more may have been on the way so theyre standing by here. The need is great, people who lost their jobs or whose Social Security checks arent enough to make ends meet. Catholic charters called the entire region a disaster zone, so they will help anyone who drives up, together with Second Harvest food bank. Catholic charters is helping thousands of people every week, new faces who never asked for a handout before but who find themselves in a financial bind due to covid19. Organizers here know the impact of the virus is hitting both the rich and floor. The virus doesnt discriminate against anyone, rich and poor. So anyone is welcome to come in, we have people who are very poor, and people who were very well wealthy but have loss everything. People are out of work. Reporter tomorrow, the Food Distribution will be at santa teresa parish. At each parish, they have had their hands full, people in droves approaching the agency for help. They were hoping they would not have to turn anybody away today. Theyve had to do it in the past. Right now it seems like they still have several food boxes left. If anybody has a need out this, theyre taking people off the streets, if theres a need, theres food here for everybody at st. Lucys. Im Damian Trujillo, nbc bay area news. There certainly is a need out there. Damian, thank you. This sunday is easter, typically a day of joy for christians around the world. But amid the pandemic, its taken an unexpected turn. We spoke with a pastor from the cathedral of faith in san jose. Theres a sense of loss there. At the same time, the power of the easter message still goes on. You cant cancel easter. You can watch cathedral of faiths full service this Easter Sunday. It begins at 9 00 a. M. Right here on nbc bay area. And one church still plans to hold a massive Easter Sunday service. Theyre actually hoping people will drive in from across the south bay. It is happening at the capital drivein. The South Ridge Church of san jose actually purchased an fm transmitter. So on sunday, Easter Sunday, people will be able to drive up, tune into their fm frequency and listen to Easter Services by pastor micah. This is from inside their cars. You will need to preregister with South Ridge Church. At the time theyre having the services, the church will have a popup pantry and theyll give out 60,000 easter eggs for the children. The church will also offer up to 1,000 fabric masks. The bay area still has 4,400 confirmed cases of covid19. Santa clara county continues to be the hot zone with more than 1,400 cases. And there are now 118 deaths across the bay area. If youve already filed for your unemployment, you could start seeing a 600 weekly boost in your payment as early as sunday. I spoke with californias Lieutenant Governor about that this morning. Big news. So this is part of the c. A. R. E. S. Act signed last week by congress. It is a 2 trillion aid package to help people and businesses get through this. Heres what you need to know, that extra 600 will go out every week for the next four months along with your state payment that adds up to a maximum weekly benefit of about a thousand dollars. The pandemic unemployment assistance applies to claims dated march 29th through july 31st. Remember, at this time gig workers and selfemployed as well as freelancers are eligible as well. And in just the last month here in california, 2. 3 million new unemployment claims were filed in our state, and more people are still wait to go filfil waiting to file. Hundreds of Staff Members at the state employment offices volunteered to process those claims through the weekend. In san jose, leaders are looking ahead to see how they can get the economy back up and running. We spoke with san jose mayor sam liccardo earlier on today in the bay. He said the city needs to prepare for the worst when theyre trying to find Financial Stability after the pandemic. The depth of the kind of cuts well have to make will probably exceed even what we saw during the Great Recession based on the magnitude of these deficits. We all hope there may be federal money that could help or things may turn in different ways in the economy. Mayor liccardo says that the government is providing resources for those in need during the pandemic through Silicon Valley strong. But thousands of families still need help. Easter weekend is here. Ive seen that storm system thats been parked over Southern California continuing to move away. Reporter this morning, more questions over what china knew about the coronavirus and when. U. S. Officials telling nbc news they picked up intelligence in november that indicated there could be a Public Health issue, possibly an outbreak in wuhan, china. And with china now claiming few new cases and even fewer deaths, the u. S. Intelligence official tells us even now the white house has been briefed to be skeptical of chinas reporting. Their numbers seem to be a little bit on the light side. And im being nice when i say that. Reporter but chinese officials assert china has always been open, transparent, and responsible in its efforts. One study found chinas lockdown in january did delay the global spread of the virus. But earlier in january the World Health Organization tweeted that chinese authorities had found no clear evidence of human to human transmission, sparking questions about whether the organization was too trusting of the country. The White House Task force last week explaining their analysis of the early reports out of china. The medical community made interpreted the chinese data as, this was serious but smaller than anyone expected, because i think probably we were missing a significant amount of the data, now that we see what happened to italy and spain. Health care workers on the front lines battling covid19 are at higher risk of being infected. One nurse at Kaiser PermanenteMedical Center is sharing her experience after testing positive. She says her symptoms worsened shortly after she first started feeling sick. Probably a few days after i was really short of breath. It was hard to walk around the house for more than a minute or two at a time, i guess you would say lower rib cage pain, some stomach pain, and i had a headache that lasted gosh, i want to say maybe seven or eight days, and it was really bad. Brenee has recovered and is continuing to selfquarantine as a precaution. She says when approved, shell head back to the front lines to help. Theres plenty of sierra snow but people are being warned to stay away. Sierra Health Leaders say the health risks outweigh any rewards. We spoke with south lake tahoes mayor Jason Collins on today in the bay. Hes asking people who own a second home there, and visitors, to stay where they are. We just dont have the resources, we have a small Health Care System and theyre doing a great job managing the impacts of covid19 and are preparing for it to escalate. In fact as we take a live look out there in lafayette, were starting to see still some clouds but some peeks of sunshine. Thats what were expecting going into the rest of the day. As we head over towards martinez, our temperatures will be in the upper 60s for the middle of the afternoon. It feels very comfortable, if youre at home open up those windows for fresh air, but keep in mind theres a high pollen count. And well see that as more trees and grasses start to populate those allergens into the air. Heres a look at our temperatures into the day. Well reach into the low 70s in concord and antioch. Were looking at low 70s in parts of the north bay. Were seen the storm system over Southern California still bringing rain around san diego. Weve been watching out for the possibility of some flooding, because this storm system has been parked there for the past several days. It has not moved, but it is slowly making its way out. Thats why were starting to get clearing here after some Early Morning rain moved through the bay area. That was all also associated with this storm system. If youre going to be grilling today, hanging out in the backyard, enjoying your friday, in santa rosa well see temperatures in the upper 60s at dinner time or as youre grilling. I think if youre having dinner around 6 00 to 7 00, its going to start to cool off, down into the low 60s. You may want to take that plate and head inside. As you look at what were expecting for the next a couple of weeks, weve seen our temperature trend really starting to warm up. Were seeing that in the forecast. So the Climate Prediction Center came out with an outlook of what were expecting for the next couple of weeks. Were looking at a big ridge of High Pressure thats going to warm up our temperatures well above normal. As we even take a look at this sevenday temperature trend, were seeing that too. Some upper 60s today. Thats about where we should be. Low 70s for tomorrow, thats also very normal. But then as we go into the end of the weekend into next week, well start to see our temperatures heating up. Were talking about some upper 70s, wouldnt be surprised if we even saw some 80degree temperatures by the end of this forecast. And it may not be til the end of next weekend when we get some rain again. Were looking at seven days of some dry weather here. San francisco in the low 60s, ten trending into the mid60s by the end of this sevenday forecast. So were in for a big warmup, marcus, into the next several days.
