Spreading to major cities from those who dont. If they refuse to wear a face coasttocoast. Social media showdown. Mask, they dont get in my car. Twitter flags another post from President Trump. For today, sam brock, nbc, miami. That brings us to the ceo of uber good morning this time for citing violence. Just ahead what the president thank you for being with us. Tweeted that set off alarm bells good morning. Thanks for having me. On the heels of his move to the numbers are just crack down on the company. Glimmers of hope. New york city, the epicenter of the nations coronavirus outbreak announces its first jawdropping ridership down 80 in april. Step toward reopening. Youve called it a shock to the system washington, d. C. , beginning to ease restrictions today. But new areas of concern emerge. Do yououl or uber and Ride Sharing Services . We certainly do where cases have spiked, lifting i think uber essentially goes with the city. We are very much a local stayathome orders. Making history. As nasas groundbreaking space expedition set to take off tomorrow, the u. S. Space force launches a new recruiting campaign. Business i see the future. When the heartbeat of the city starts beating again, uber starts moving. We are seeing business improve i see exploration and courage. From april lows. Just ahead our inside look at the mission of the nations new military branch. So much talent in this space force. The latest forecast for still down significantly but we tomorrows liftoff. And were ready to launch. Are seeing improvement happening our summer music series kicks faster in some of the states and cities that are opening up cautiously, obviously, in, lets say, in atlanta or houston off with a special performance we are seeing volumes return even in other states that from Lady Antebellum getting the weekend starting off right. Havent completely opened up, they are off the bottom but they still are down significantly year on year but we are seeing signs of life. I think thats a good thing. You want to get moving but you want to get moving in a safe way. That brings me to the next today friday, may 29th, 2020. Question a lot of folks have come to announcer from nbc news, depend on uber this is today with Savannah Guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. I know the company was about to hi, everybody. Good morning. Be profitable for the first time by the end of the year welcome to today, it is friday morning. Were glad to have you with us. Good morning, savannah. Were going to start off with how do you convince people now tensions boiling over in minneapolis and beyond over the that its safe, that they should get in a confined space with a stranger, convincing drivers and customers . Death of george floyd. It has been another difficult absolutely. Night, even at this early hour of the morning. Its a twoway street. For us, we have redesigned the it is a very volatile scene experience from top to bottom there. Police and the National Guard patrolling the streets. With safety in mind. Our drivers and our riders have to wear masks. For example, we are rolling out Technology Feature for drivers where the drivers actually have to take selfie multiple buildings on fire. You see it right there. We have Machine Learning after a night of protests filled algorithms, understanding with violence, even rioting, much of the anger aimed at the whether that driver is actually Police Precinct of the officers involved in George Floyds death who have been fired but no criminal charges yet. Wearing a mask or saying that the demonstrations fanning out to all corners of the country, cities like new york, they are wearing a mask. Louisville, denver, los angeles, if a driver sees a rider who is not wearing a mask, they can cancel the trip, if they feel and many others, savannah. Unsafe as well ena moment, hoda, we are weve invested millions in ppe going talk to one of the city weve secured 23 Million Masks Council Members in minneapolis but first lets get right to and are distributing them to our nbcs Gabe Gutierrez there on the ground for us. Gabe, good morning. Drivers as well. So you know, getting out of the tell us about the night. House, starting to move again is going to feel funny, and it may savannah, good morning. Feel unsafe. This was a powder keg that were doing our part to make it exploded overnight. As safe as possible, and then behind me one of the many buildings that are on fire right were also including twoway now. Many of the protesters here are livid that no charges have been filed against the officers involved in the death of george accountability the rider and driver essentially rate each other. To the extent they see behavior thats unsafe, well instantly floyd. Know about it and be able to do now, the National Guard and state police are here trying to keep the peace, but today there are real questions about whether this chaos will keep escalating. This morning minneapolis is something about it. Going longterm, so much about our society has changed. We dont know yet whether its reeling, tensions running high in a city on edge. A third night of protest again turning violent, demonstrators permanent. Clashing with police. Buildings, including this evacuated Police Precinct youre talking about companies who may start working from home burning. Exclusively or in a much more protesters cheering as it went significant way. People not going to doing the work travel, uber or trips to the airport, things like that, up in flames. The symbolism of a building or to concerts cannot outweigh the importance of life, of our officers, or the do you worry about this business public. Longterm being able to survive . We could not risk serious injury i think that the focus right to anyone. Now, honestly, is shortterm and tomorrow how can we build the safest service we k longterm will take care of itself its a scene of utter chaos. Right now this fire is raging out of control and smoke is billowing into the air, can be scene for miles. The rioti we think we can make the right the rioting a dramatic escalation for more peaceful adjustments and actually in certain places, like hong kong, protests early in the day. To tear down our city like this, whats this proving . Who is more advanced in terms of their response and in terms of people supposed to protect testing masks, et cetera, were seeing the business come back and serve us sit up and murder even sometimes close to prior us in cold blood. In south minneapolis and saint paul, looters ransacked levels people are getting back to work, even during what you call Party Businesses in louisville, kentucky, seven people were shot, and a rally hours, people going out to against Police Brutality restaurants. Life begins anew while nationwide from chicago to while i dont expect behavior to where we were previously unless new york to denver, theres mounting outrage over the death theres a vaccine or something of 46yearold george floyd and very big happens, i do think that people, behaviors and the lack of criminal charges people revert to normal. They are going to be more against the four officers involved careful. They are going to wear masks we are going to have cleaning supplies with it. I cant breathe. This new video from a different angle shows two other officers not seen before side by side next to officer Derek Chauvin who knelt on floyds neck for several minutes overnight in a tweet President Trump suggesting he might send in the short few moments we have left, you wrote a letter to the military in to assume control. Earlier he called for expedited the white house asking that uber drivers be included in the stimulus package that gave federal investigation. Certain things will change i do think business will come back, if life comes back into attorney general, fbi and the city, then uber will be back along with it. In the short few moments we have left, you wrote a letter to attorney general to take a strong look and see what went the white house asking that uber on. All four officers have been drivers be included in the stimulus package that gave fired. Relief it did, by the way, include drivers and gig workers. One of the reasons they werent there is other evidence that do not support a criminal included was they werent considered full time by uber do you have a change of heart about that charge. Reporter but patience has i know its not your Business Model but how do you think about it i think independent work should come with social protections, earning protections, health protection, already worn thin. We feel as if there was a knee on all of our collective necks. This the damage from the air. The governor has now activated accident protection, et cetera that is a change from where weve come from, and we need to work with lawmakers, regulators to allow that to happen. Theres no reason why the National Guard. We want justice were mad. Im mad. His employer and landlord, said floyd lost his job because of the coronavirus pandemic. Hes like a brother to me and didnt deserve to die that way. Reporter this morning south independent work shouldnt come with respect and shouldnt come minneapolis is wondering when the violence will end. Throughout most of the night there was no Police Presence here, but that has obviously changed. Protesters had actually cut off access to some parts of this area so firefighters couldnt h. Now police has set up a make it in here. Now police set up a perimeter its keeping protesters outside as well as the media here is what happened live on television on cnn a short time ago. Im sorry youre under arrest. Do you mind telling me why im under arrest, sir . Ation herw why am i under arrest, sir certainly a very fluid situation here right now were keeping safe with our security team. But as you can see behind me, a huge show of force right now from police on the scene as daybreak, we really start to see for the first time the damage here it is extensive. Throughout most of the night, again, it was chaos here multiple buildings on fire now you see emergency crews here trying to douse the flames and keep those fires from spreading. Hoda, there are real questions here about what happens next. What a scene, gabe, thank you. We are joined by Jeremiah Ellison, member of city council. Councilman ellison, good morning to you i want to get to those protests in a second. At the heart of those protests, the rage, is about the fact that no one has been arrested in this case the mayor has basically called it a murder and is asking why that hasnt happened a lot of people, obviously, have seen the tape of what happened here is what the county attorney said he said that there is other evidence that does not support a criminal charge. Are you privy to what that other evidence may be . No, i think the statement is vague. I wish the District Attorney would be more specific more importantly, i wish the District Attorney would watch the tape, see whats evident on the tape as far as the fact that four officers murdered mr. Floyd and make the arrest. Absent the charges, absent the charges, council member, how do you calm a city you know, i think we had a great opportunity on the first night to respond differently when it came to the situation. For those of us who kind of come from more activist backgrounds, who have participated in mass protests before, you can kind of see where a crowd is going i felt like this was really preventible. Unfortunately i think that conventional wisdom of force won out, and that was the strategy we pursued i think that strategy has proven to be an unmitigated failure. You know what, it was interesting yesterday on our air craig interviewed one of George Floyds friends, nba great Steven Jackson he was asked about what those protests and what george would have thought he said he would have welcomed the support but basically said he didnt like that kind of violence in the streets. That wasnt, he said, what george floyd would have wanted. I think one of the dynamics when you look at a protest like that is really the protest is about the death of a person and not always necessarily what the person would have wanted, right . I imagine that nobody would want to see the kind of devastation that we are experiencing here in minneapolis. But what people are responding to is not just the death of mr. Floyd but also jamar clark, people who have been killed in the various Police Departments in the metro area and whose deaths have largely gone unrecognized as crimes. Just pull out your tea leaves for one second and just tell me finally where you think we will be one week from today. You know, all i can do is speculate. I hope that the District Attorney is able to get his act together and make the arrest of the four officers who participated in the murder, and i hope that the crowd i hope that the protesters begin to recede and go home i understand the rage. It is shocking to see the level of destruction thats occurred i just hope that we can keep as many people as safe as possible and begin on the road to justice. Minneapolis city councilman Jeremiah Ellison councilman, thank you so much. We appreciate your time. Savannah, over to you. I think thats really what the protesters are calling for. All right minneapolis city councilman Jeremiah Ellison councilman, thank you so much. We appreciate your time. Savannah, over to you. Hoda, also overnight a tweet about the situation unfolding in minneapolis from President Trump led twitter to flag it for violating the companys rules against glorifying violence. This happened hours after the president moved to crack down on twitter. Nbcs White House Correspondent Peter Alexander has more on this back and forth hey, peter, good morning. Good morning to you President Trump did take to twitter other than to weigh in on this violence in minneapolis calling the protesters thugs and warning that looters could be shot twitter, that has been locked in that bitter back and forth with the president this week quickly flagged one of those tweets, as you noted, blocking it from being liked, saying the president s words violated the Company Rules agains promoting violence overnight the president making his position clear writing these thugs are dishonoring the memory of george floyd, and i wont let that happen. Any difficulty and we will assume control when the looting starts, the shooting starts. That tweet then flagged by twitter adding what it calls a Public Interest notice saying the president s tweet violates our policies regarding the glorification of violence. Jacob frey calling him week saying he should get his act together or i will call the s i responsibility for you National Guard the mayor responded overnight. Weakness is refusing to tak responsibility for your own actions. Weakness is pointing a finger during a time of crisis. Donald trump knows nothing about the strength of minneapolis. We are strong as hell. Is this a difficult time period . Yes. But you better be damn sure that were going to get through this. About that flag twitter posted on the president s tweet, the company in tweets of its own overnight notes the Historical Context of some of the language the president used in his tweet, its connection to violence as well, they say, twitter does not specifically detail what its referring to during the blood shed of riots in 1960s, miamis police chief infuriated black leaders famously crediting the calm in his city to a get tough warning saying i let the word filter down when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Twitter has not taken down the president s tweets saying it may be in the publics interest for the twitter to remain accessible back to you. The main epicenter of the outbreak is ready to take its first steps towards reopening. What will that look like and will it be soon enough for struggling businesses . Kathy park in times square kathy, good morning. Reporter hey, hoda, good morning. When the stayathome order went into effect more than two months ago, the images of times square emptying out was just jarring. This morning its still pretty empty. However, we are starting to hear the construction pick back up. For the first time were getting a closer look at what reopening new york city will look like this morning new york city, the only part of the state thats still shut down is on the verge of reopening. Its important to remind everyone we say restart we do not mean rushing back. The city is setting its sights on the next few weeks, sending between 200 and 400,000 new yorkers back to work it will also be a huge test for the citys Mass Transit System which is now sanitized daily the nations former epicenter of the outbreak is close to meeting the final bench marks for phase one. Having enough hospital beds and contract tracers. We dont change what is safe from one place to another, so there are no different rules for new york city. By the first half of june, nonessential retail like clothing and Furniture Stores can reopen for Curbside Pickup manufacturing, construction, and wholesale operations can also resume but the new plans dont include bars and resur they will have to continue surviving on pickups and deliveries for at least another month. Were ready for the rebirth the point is, you know, we want it to start. Some businesses defied orders prematurely like this tanning salon on Staten Island the mayor says those businesses could face fines. The goal here is not to fine businesses, not to shut down businesses, but to educate and suppor
