Of the road man to dev moving a burning quickly. We have had a photographer on the scene overnight gathering that video and getting the stories and spoke with folks burned trying to escape the fire and heard people gathering the belongings, taking photographs of the inside and outside and belongings to document what they have in case there is any damage from this fire. It is important to note that this all stems from the lightning that we had a couple days ago, that lightning struck some very dry brush creating this fire and thats where we are right now. Take a listen to someone working to escape this fire here in ive never evacuated before. But why this time . Because it was it was coming hard and fast and winds probably 45 miles per hour. Reporter and i can tell you the smoke out here very, very heavy. You cant see the flames. They look like fire flies in the distance but that fire still burning out here smoke very thick. There are cars covered with ash and looks like 5,000 outages according to pg e on the western side of 80 because of this fire so in the area you should work to develop that escape plan because theyre working to knock this blaze down and still moving very quickly. Today in the bay. All right. Thanks. Very active scene there. So heres a look at the fires from the pg e wildfire cameras. This is time lapsed from mt. Vaco overnight. One point it looks like the camera was damaged by the flames. Wow. You know hundreds of people under Evacuation Orders in the north bay. One of our own Robbie Beasom told him to pack up and leave and he is having time to get the valuables but says everyone not so lucky. I probably filmed like unfortunately like four or five homes going up in flames. Wow. People just scrambling to get out. Loading horses, wildlife running everywhere. It was just and the firefighters are doing the best they can but its just everywhere. Continues to spread and also those temperatures out there that were expecting today, kari, not going to be really good conditions in fighting tha extremely hot out there. Yeah. We have had very hot weather and not much of a cool down during the morning hours. Laura was trying a time lapse of a camera on mt. Vaca. This is the last image of 45 minutes ago before this camera also werent down and intense and spreading rapidly. If you are told to prepare to head out make sure you are ready to grab that emergency kit with important papers with you, change of clothes, lots of food, water, medication for you and your pets and head out in case youre given the word to go. Looking at the air quality due to the fires that have been burning we are going to have a lot of smoke coming in as well as ash falling in the bay area. Some of the most unhealthy air quality right now in parts of the peninsula, the south bay and over toward the east bay. Well talk about how hot it gets over the next few minutes into today. Mike, heading out the door this morning, hows it looking for the commute . Kari, we have a couple of problems for the commute and other complications. Behind me, a slowing drive. We have southbound 880 approaching whipple road. A crash with a big rig an enmay have has many as three lanes blocked right now. Chp arriving shortly. Jamming up from 92 now. Avoid south 880 until then. Looks good for the flow. See the red stretches down through there. Back to you. Officials in santa cruz with a News Conference on the fires the burning there. Lets listen in. Last night we saw a major increase in activity and we saw several of the fires merge together and essentially make a significant run into Santa Cruz County. We cincreased and consumed at least 10,000 acres and significant evacuations of over 22,000 people between San Mateo County and Santa Cruz County combined. The fire itself is headed in a southeasterly direction, it is headed from the San Mateo County line down into santa cruz and we do have communities out in front of this fire at this time. With that in mind over 6,000 structures have been asked to evacuate throughout the entire fire area. This is a very active timber fire burning in two counties with a serious threat to both Public Safety and for structures that are out in front of it. There are Evacuation Centers set up in both counties. There are Law Enforcement officers out in the area conducting evacuations. With that, ill hand it over to unit chief watt conditions to say a few words. Good morning. Just to reiterate what chief cox stated, this lightning complex started on sunday around 3 00 a. M. Weve been working diligently with the resources we have to contain the fires and have little success at this time due to the fuel moistures of the fuels that are burning, the terrain is very steep and difficult and the sheer lack of Resources Available hampered the efforts significantly. As chief cox stated last night or late yesterday afternoon, we experienced an increase in winds that created a situation where we were having long range spotting throughout the southern end of the fires that are burning in San Mateo County. Those long range spotting caused significant increase in fire activity throughout Santa Cruz County and northern part of the county near waterman gap and woulder creek forcing us into the situation where we had to order evacuations in many communities and chief deputy carp will speak more about the evacuations but im going to speak more about the sheer lack of resources state wide and how that hampered our activity. Right now we are in the position, we have no resources to putt on the line today and well be doubling shifting all resources currently on the line. This is significant safety hazard for our firefighters out there as well as the communities th reinforce to the communities, o. Please leave your houses and allow us the opportunity to get in there and do the job we need to do and thats all i have. Id like to introduce the sheriffs chief. Good morning. So i just want to touch on real quick the evacuation efforts we have been doing. With our office that started yesterday early afternoon. All the resources to bear we put into evacuating the 236, the highway 9 corridor into Boulder Creek and determined on the nature of the fire and progressing and the information from cal fire so as that spotting as you heard is a developing in different areas we shifted efforts and really that effort is right now in the bonnie dune area. Very serious situation. We have our office committed to it and asked for mutual aid. We got that and neighboring Law Enforcement agencies throughout the bay area have come to our aid to the help of to folks here in the koucounty to knock on do. It is a serious situation, one that obviously we have residents up there, receive the and obviously we want to maintain Public Safety and something we are in the early stages of and well be absolutely committed to and providing every resource that our office has to bear to get notice to as many people as we absolutely can. Thank you. Just a few final notes about the i incident itself. Structures have been destroyed. Thats an ongoing count and Damage Inspection Team that has to come through behind the fire to actually assess what the damage has been. For other people who may be traveling through the area there are multiple road closures in the county at the moment and we ask people if they dont need to be in the county to not be in Santa Cruz County itself due to the fact that people are trying to vautd and anticipate we will have to call for additional evacuations so if everyone can ensure that they stay attuned to the social media accounts, if you look at cal fire sign up for updates for this fire specifically online. With that this morning a Management Team is transitioning command of this incident so due to the complexity of 53person Specialized Team will be coming in. And again, we are just one of multiple large major fires burning across the state right now. And it really is incumbent upon all californians at this point to put their safety first, think about how and when to evacuate safely and please, please heed the orders when we do issue them. Happen the i happy to take any questions. The lack of resources the firefighters how difficult is it going to be to contain this fire . Yeah. I mean, this is the unfortunate reality is continue to monitor this News Conference happening with cal fire in santa cruz right now talking about the fire that is merged from san mateo and santa cruz cown tins together. 10,000 acres consumed so far. 22,000 evacuations between San Mateo County and santa cruz combined saying avoid that area and cal fire reporting this is a very serious threat to Public Safety. Well monitor that. A lot more news ahead. You are watching today in the bay. Awesome internet. Its more than just fast. It keeps all your devices running smoothly. [ barking ] right now at 6 15, we go back to a live view of the fires that have been happening in vacaville. This was part of the lightening complex of fires in napa county, it is now spreading into Solano County near vacaville and people are forced to evacuate as this fire spreads very rapidly. We are watching this as well as the air quality and our high temperatures for today. Thats coming up in a few minutes. Two Traffic Alerts on the 34map fairfield. I80 for an overturned big rig. Another crash and the build at the bay bridge and not tacking about this issue for hayward with slowing for the nimitz. All coming up. Good morning and a very happy wednesday to you. Well get back to fire coverage in a minute but talk about your money. A year ago if you had told me that i would be hold up in my home and any time i left my home i had to wear a mask i might have actually believed you because pandemics are a real thing. If you said at the same time the stock market would hit new records i wouldnt have believed you at all. Not only will the s p 500 start at a new high, so too be l the nasdaq, very peculiar indeed. The stock market is not the economy. The economy is not the stock market. The broader economy is not doing well at all. We are in a recession but here are the numbers this morning. Be easy to say it makes categorically no sense but some of it makes a little sense like united as and American Airlines down which makes a lot of sense and then home services, lowes, home depot, netflix, amazon, things that involve your house are way up and pushing the market higher. Add the fed making money very easy to get and a lot of it. In fact, working on changing the way it deals with inflation to make sure theres lots of cash. We get the latest fed minutes and its important to economists, and investors because its really the fed t l on. Marcus and laura, we have been talking about this for quite sometime, tomorrow or friday the day that uber and lyft say they may suspend operations in california due to a. B. 5. Hmm, thats tough for people. Not going anywhere, right . A lot of people arent going anywhere. Right. No. I drove for the first time in a long time yesterday. Did you . Is it like riding a bike . Yeah. Thank goodness it is, yes. All right. Thank you, scott. 6 18 this morning. Trending for you, how act this . Girl scout cookies for breakfast . Sure. I have done it before but thanks to a new flavor Just Announced called toastyay and breadshaped cookies look like miniature french toast with icing. The sales kick off again next year. Oh my gosh. Sounds like something my kids made. I was just going to say. I dont know if mom will go for that. Thats what im thinking. All right. Look. Also trending this morning, a swiss town getting a big sweet surprise. Reportedly started snowing chocolate powder. This after a malfunction in a Chocolate Factory ventilation system caused cocoa powder to rain down on the surrounding area. Talk about the town leaders say Property Damage costs will be covered. Thats like a childrens dream, as well. That is. Something to look forward to. Now raining chocolate, too. Absolutely. Speaking of rain, we could use some rain. Any rain in sight for us, kari . No. And the thing is that we had those thunderstorms that popped up over the weekend. We are watching for the possibility of the same type of weather setup and right now is when we need it and we are seeing whats left behind those fires that have been sparked by the lightning, especially over the Santa Cruz Mountains and this has just exploded on pops up on the radar. From the fire and possibly some of the ash. We are seeing that ash coating the roads and the vehicles, everything outside right now and the smoke is so thick that even though the sun is rising over the trivalley we cannot see it right now so we are going to be choked out with poor air quality. It is going to be very unhealthy to be outside. Turn the vents on recirculate inside the home, starting to feel sick, maybe wear a mask throughout the day as the air quality has been basically off the charts and map it at home. Purple air. Com. We look at the temperatures that are going to be rising again today, back into the 90s and into the triple digits inland east bay and excessive heat warnings until 9 00 aen then expire. Seeing this intense area of High Pressure. Its not going to move but we will have at times enough of an ocean breeze and a possibility that this could draw in another surge of a weakening tropical system bringing us some moisture, possibly thunder and lightning again next week as the intense heat continues, thats something to watch after the next several days so were looking at some hot and dry weather here and actually some low 90s will be a cool down for us and then we have more very hot weather in the forecast through the end of the weekend. Mike mike, hows it looking for the commute and evacuating . Kari, it is complicated. Stick with me. We have vacaville, 128. Thats the complex thats cierra is talking about. Look at the map. Just south of there is just jammed up because of a Traffic Alert, an overturned big rig blocks lanes. Multiple problems with 128 and the top of the screen, closures there in the other fire area and the lnu fire complex. And one below it in alamo. Recovering for those speeds. The crash is clearing around Sycamore Valley road. This is dramatic. Hayward and down towards whipple road in through hayward, overturned rig there in the middle lane. Folks are getting by. This is a lot of slowing. South of there everything moving smoothly for the freeway except for the closures for the czu fire. Highway 1 on the left side. Back to you. So much going on. Thank you very mitch. Following so much breaking news overnight for you. Talking about the bay area fires that have been expanding overnight. Heres a live look in vacaville. Evacuees rushing to escape the flames, some have suffered injuries and burns themselves. We are continuing to monitor what is going on there. Meantime there are other fires burning in santa cruz counties, San Mateo County actually merge with that in Santa Cruz County consuming at least 10,000 acres so far. The fire exploded overnight in size. 22,000 people have been evacuated between san mateo and Santa Clara County and we heard cal fire with more from a News Conference moments ago. That conference is still going on. Kris sanchez is there going to join us with a live report with updates in just moments. Marcus . Nbc bay area responds to a san jose medical school student. He asked chris chmura and his team to help him correct a hospital billing problem. Good wednesday morning. When steven lamb is a doctor hell have sympathy for a patient whose bill goes haywire. Heres what happened. Last year he had to go to the e. R. And when discharged the hospital billed him 550 for a deposit and told him theyd reimburse him when the insurance paid. But after six months of back and forth with the hospital steven still hadnt gotten the deposit back. Heres what he told us. I aspire to become a compassionate and caring hospitalist physician and im disappointed in how the Health Care System is treating me as a consumer. We asked the hospital to take a look. It did. And a few days later steven got a check for 550. If youre canned to pay a deposit for a medical procedure, we recommend you use a credit card. Make sure you get a printed receipt that states you are due a refund after your insurance pays. Keep it and keep tabs. Then if the hospital doesnt keep its word you can dispute the charge with your credit card company. That step will probably get the attention of the Hospital Finance Department and hopefully trigger a refund. Have a great wednesday. Thanks, chris.
