KNTV Today In The Bay July 12, 2024

In the progress here. But take a look at these wind speeds around fairfield we are already seeing gusts at 30 miles an hour and the high winds will be the issue as we go into today as our temperatures once again stay pretty hot reaching into the 90s and up to 103 degrees today. Ill continue to monitor this and well talk about the fire danger as well. Mike, youve been watching the roads. How is it looking . Its looking great right now, kari. Things are moving smoothly on the freeways despite a crash. Well take you out. Green sensors and the crash approaching the benicia breaks affects industrial, the off ramp, but not the freeway heading to 780 and the bridge itself. A live look at the palo alto shows you the span through 101 on the peninsula. A smooth, easy drive. You see the taillights, no problems there. There may be a crew further north. Back to you. Thank you, mike. Now to our breaking news and whats already a record year for wildfires. Across the state 2 million acres have burned so far. More than 14,000 firefighters are battling flames as we speak. Nbc has just learned that overnight, 13 people were rescued from the creek fire. And pg e is cutting power to some 160,000 customers in Northern California to reduce fire danger. Bob redell brought us that good news on the rescue just moments ago. Lets go back to bob. Hes talking about the rescue at the creek fire. 135,000 acres, bob, and people still desperate to get out. Reporter but these recent rescues of the 13 people all right. Reporter after sunrise were going to try to get bobs shot back. Several people were rescued from the creek fire, and they were able to get out safely, but it was a harrowing thing. Bob, we can hear you again now, so how did this rescue happen . Reporter sorry. Apologies. Im having problems with my cell phone here. The Army National guard based out of fresno found a break in the weather and the smoke, and within the past hour to 90 minutes. They have resumed flying their choppers into the creek zone fire, kris, to save the 50 people who are trapped. This is video of the 13 people just rescued. This is 13 of the 50. They were airlifted from china peak in the middle of the Sierra National forest. They got back to the airport in fresno. Other people are trapped at lake edison. Both locations within the Sierra National forest. Weve heard from one of the evacuees who had been camping. He tried to get out with four other people. They tried to drive out. They waited for nine hours at china peak as the fire grew around them. It was pretty scary. Something that you probably never want to go through. Just waiting for help . Exactly. We were up there for quite a while just waiting for some kind of relief, some kind of help. Fire all around you. Fire all around us. Smoke everywhere. Reporter we know one person has died of an apparent heart attack. The National Guard has sent three helicopters to four different locations. Again, this is within the past hour or so. The one that returned from china peak had 13 people. Not clear what the status is of the other rescue attempts. A colonel with the Army National guard did an interview with the today show said theyre actually surprised by how quickly this fire has green because theyve been working the fires in napa and another one in the state of california, and then to have this one come up and here they are in the situation again trying to rescue those people. The latest is 13 people surprisingly rescued overnight when initially we thought they would wait until after sunrise. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Moving that fast its good they could get in so fast. We want to switch to our other fire and weather story. Napa and sonoma counties are among the counties that will be impacted by the pg e psps shutoffs. Remember those . Within the last hour some of those shutoffs started kicking in. These are all triggered by the arrival of strong winds that are forecast through tomorrow. You heard kari talking about that. Calistoga is one of those targeted areas and although the downtown area will be safe because its powered by a generator provided by the city, other people who live in the area say they are also prepared. We have so many elderly people in here that we have to look after because a lot of them dont drive, they dont get out of their houses. We have to help them. More than 20,000 customers in napa and sonoma counties are expected to lose power. A lot more people than that. This could be going on until tomorrow at 7 00 in the evening. We will have live coverage from the north bay coming up at the bottom of the hour. New video of a fire in mendocino county, the oak fire started yesterday. Evacuation orders are in effect. Here is a map of where the fire is burning. Burning 50,000 acres. The oak fire is now completely out of control. The Angeles National forest is not the only closure that were talking about right now. The u. S. Forest service just closed several forests and deal with the rescue of the creek fire. The closest ones are Stanislaus National forest. Lets take a peak outside and smoke and haze from all of those wildfires expected to linger for at least two more days. Today is day 23 of the spare the air alert. Another one will come tomorrow. Our top weather story our top story is the weather because of the impact its having on the firefight and the air quality, kari. Those fires are still burning. Smoke in the air and thus contributing to the unhealthy air quality that we have right now. That unhealthy air quality does continue today. As we look at also our temperatures, its still going to be really hot. As we reach into the lunch hour into the 90s, we are once again headed in some spots into the triple digits. Like were seeing in san jose with some mid80s later this evening. Well talk about the wind coming up in a few minutes. That may also impact some drivers heading across the bridges, mike. Yes, so hold on, folks. If you have a larger vehicle, even a van, but its not filled with stuff that might be catching those winds. Watch out for karis reports here. No problems reported in that way around the bay right now but tr. As you see green sensors everywhere were looking. As you travel in through the north bay heading down to the benicia bridge at the top of the screen, a crash around industrial affects the off ramp. A car went off the roadway and then onto the off ramp there. No major injuries reported. The area i circled is not a crash but reported as a fire thats restarting in a closure. Thats just a reminder were still watching the fire zones and with the winds kari is talking about theres still something to watch there, scott. Back to you. Were going to have the ultimate Treasure Hunt where the winner will be receiving a key, a key to our one of our candy factories. Now assuming you get the necklace, and you do have to pay 50 and only 1,000 people will be able to participate. I thought he was inviting us you drink the soda and it floats to the top. I thought he was inviting us to his Retirement Party virtually. Now he wants us to pay for the retirement with our 50 . Ill just have the jelly bellies. Im ruling out the jelly bellies because im so mad about the heat. Yeah, and sometimes those are spicy, too. I dont like those. Lets talk about how hot its been and now we have the red flag warning as we are going to have high fire conditions possible for today. We have very low humidity along with those gusty winds and all of these areas shaded in red included in the red flag warning. Thats going to be the issue for today. The sevenday forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. As we talk about that red flag warning, we say it all the time but you may be wondering what exactly is a red flag warning. Well, theyre issued about 12 to 24 hours in advance when we have relative humidity levels at 15 or less and we also have winds that are going to be at least 25 Miles Per Hour in some of those gusts. We are looking at wind speeds for today as we go through this forecast especially in the north bay. Some of those gusts may be 30, 35 Miles Per Hour, even up to 50 in some of the upper elevations, and then as we go into this evening its still going to be quite breezy and the humidity will be very low. You combine that with relative hume levels that will be in some spots in the Single Digits just very dry air that dries out the vegetation even more and it allows for any fires that do develop to spread rapidly. We are going to continue to watch out for that. As our temperatures today reach into the upper 90s today, by tomorrow were in the mid90s and we make progress towards the end of the week towards the milder weather. San francisco will see some 70s for the next several days and that also continues into the weekend. Mike, how is it looking right now for the morning commute . Kari, it looks like there was some excitement. Lets go to our san jose camera northbound would be the headlights coming towards us. Southbound with those taillights, i just saw a couple of chp cruisers flying past there. No incidents reported for the area. The map shows you that counter commute south and continuing down to tully. Well follow that and let you know if theres anything going on. Silicon valley and the rest of the bay shows an easy drive. A little build through the altamont and the bay bridge a little build as well but no problem. Folks may start to tap their brakes over the next 10 to 15 minutes. Back to you. Thank you, mike. The return to the debate. Up next the battle over a st stimulus and the possibility for a second stimulus bill. You can find our team on social media. We are staying on top of the fires burning all across the state. We have posts and ongoing updates on evacuations, rescues and the damage already done. Be sure to follow nbc bay area on facebook, twitter and instagram. Youre watching today in the bay. Developing this morning for the sixth straight night hundreds of people took to the streets in rochester, new york. Demonstrators gathered outside the Public Safety building around 9 00 in the evening. At one point a small group tried to take down barricades. Bottles were thrown at officers in riot gear. The crowd eventually dispersed with no arrests. The protests first started with the release of video tied to the death of this man, daniel prude, in Police Custody in march. He lost consciousness after police put a spit hood over his face. He died two weeks later. The man once known as President Trumps fixer is making explosive new allegations about their relationship. President trumps former personal lawyer michael cohen, now a convicted felon, calls his former boss a cult leader in a new book. Today in the bays tracie potts is live in washington with a first look at an exclusive interview with nbcs lester holt. And, tracie, these revelations come as cohen is trying to sell this book. Reporter exactly. Hes out of prison. Hes trying to sell the book, which goes on sale and hits store shelves today. He says in this book, we saw early releases of the book, he says he never heard the president use a racial slur but he describes what he calls racist interaction with President Trump. For example, he says one time they were driving through predominantly black chicago neighborhood when President Trump said, quote, only the blacks could live this way. And he claims that the president had so much hatred for former president obama rooted in the fact that he was the first black president that he even hired what he called a fauxbama to sit with him and talk with him about all of this. This is all detailed in the upcoming memoir disloyal. Cohen says he wrote it as a warning to trump supporters. I describe mr. Trump as a cult leader, and i was in this cult. While i was in the cult i was really refusing to acknowledge that the actions that i was performing for my boss were morally wrong. Reporter cohen is under home confinement now. He was released early in july after being sentenced to three with payments to two women at the direction, he says, of President Trump. He was released again in july. Now the white house is speaking out about this book calling it fan fiction saying that cohen readily admits to lying routinely but then expects poem to believe him while hes trying to sell the book and make money from the books sales. Cohen says he lied for the president s benefit. Scott . All right, tracie, thank you. Lester holt will be on the today show coming up with more previews about his interview with michael cohen. That, of course, is right after today in the bay. Well take you live to capitol hill where the Gopcontrolled Senate is expected to take up a new coronavirus stimulus bill this week to try to help those people who are still struggling amid the pandemic.
