KNTV Today In The Bay July 11, 2024

Another chilly start and its clear. Were not seeing the patchy dense fog throughout the week so we are starting out with a clear commute for you but look at these numbers. In the east bay were in the upper 30s in the next hour and then well see our temperatures gradually warming up, a lot of sunshine and it will be a nice day, our highs reaching into the mid to upper 60s this afternoon. There are some things im concerned about in the forecast. Ill talk about that coming up in a few minutes. Vianey, how are you looking what are you seeing right now as you look at the commute . Well, as we start to get into that heavy traffic hour of the day which is near the 6 00 a. M. Hour, we are getting reports of a new crash along highway 17, right after the alma bridge. The slow lane is blocked because of a crash. Anytime there is a crash that is blocking any of the delays it can cause heavy delays. If that is part of your morning commute drive times coming up in a few minute. The governor warning the statewide stayathome order is highly likely. Today in the bays bob redell is tracking that pending lockdown. Lets begin with tracie potts in washington. Vice president elect harris on the vaccines and schools. Talk to us about the plan. Reporter making sure everyone masks up starting with inauguration. He will keep dr. Anthony fauci onboard and getting the vaccine. President elect biden talked about why its important and why he plans to get that shot himself on camera to encourage other people to do the same. I think that my three predecessors have set the model as to what should be done saying once its declared to be safe and i think barack said once fauci says its clear, thats my measure. Obviously its important to communicate to the American People its safe. Its safe to do this. Reporter we also heard from Vice President elect harris. Because of the covid numbers fluctuating and now really going up, schools have opened and had to close again. She talked about how the Biden Harris Administration will approach that. Every parent wants their kid to go back to school, every teacher wants to educate those children, every Community Benefits from those children getting an education. So there is wide consensus about the priority and the goal, and then we have to bring everyone together around how to achieve that in a way that is smart. Smart is about prioritizing the safety of our children and their teachers and their families and their communities and prioritizing the education of our children. Reporter and in that interview she also talked about joe biden as president drawing distinctions with President Trump. The American People deserve in their president to have someone who is truly patriotic, who loves our country, who puts the people of the country first, not themselves. Thats joe biden. Reporter clearly the big issue that theyre having to deal with is covid19. Not only the Health Impact but the impacts on the economy. We saw the new jobs numbers come out. Biden will be talking about that later today. Very low jobs numbers coming out. 245,000. Tracie, lets talk about the status of relief here, the relief bill. Reporter so thats looking promising and thats about as far as i want to take it. President trump has said that he would be willing to sign the 908 billion compromise the democrats and republicans came up with. The question now will Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell put that up for a vote when he had said before he thought the president would sign off on the republican version and thats where he wanted to start. Well have to wait and see once again. So many people waiting to see. They need a lot of relief. Tracie potts live from washington, thank you. Relief is what we need because of the current surge. A number of icu beds is getting dangerously low and soon a new statewide stayathome order could take place. Bob redell is live for us downtown. Talk to us about what these restrictions would mean. Reporter if and when this threeweek stayathome order goes into effect, marcus, were going to be talking about no more outdoor or indoor dining, only takeout and delivery, and among other restrictions much reduced capacity inside retail stores. This new order will go into effect if our region goes below the 15 icu bed capacity. However, here in Alameda County the Health Department here is warning that they could go into this stayathome order before that happens because they want to preserve that capacity and save lives. Here is where it stands right now. Most counties including alameda hovering at 30 icu bed capacity. Santa clara county, 17 . Sonoma county, less than 1 . Only three icu beds remaining. Governor newsom broke the state into five regions when he made this announcement yesterday. You have the bay area, northern california, greater sacramento, San Joaquin Valley and southern california. The bay area includes monterey and santa cruz counties. The governor says some regions could get the shutdown in just a day or two. We have no choice, frankly. We tried to press lightly on the brake, on that emergency brake. I think theyre pressing a little bit hard now because we cannot keep up so far with what were preventing which is overflooding the capacity of the hospitals to care for patients. If thats the case ill probably have to lay off most of my people again, and its christmastime. Its no fun for them or anybody. Situations seem dire. These Small Businesses arent the problem. Outdoor dining isnt the issue. Its the people acting a fool out there that arent taking care of themselves and the people close to them. Reporter take a look at your tv screen. Here is what happens if and when a threeweek stayathome order goes into effect. Personal care services, hair salons, closed. As i mentioned, no indoor or Outdoor Dining. Delivery and takeout okay. Bars, wineries, zoos, movie theaters, playgrounds closed. Retail stores at 20 capacity. Outdoor religious services okay. Schools already open for inperson learning, they can stay open. In a letter the company said its drivers provide critical transportation for other essential workers and allow people to stay home to order food. The department of justice is suing facebook saying the Menlo Park Company sets aside hundreds of jobs for foreigners, visa holders, jobs that should have gone to americans, and makes those job openings hard for americans to discover by not advertising them on its website. The senate has approved Christopher Waller to join the Federal Reserve board of governors. He squeaked by a single vote. And airbnb says it will crack down on those planning to rent a house with the plan to have a new years eve party. Only renters with qualified reviews and if many cases the company will require you to sign up for two nights and sign an agreement that says you understand you can and will be sued if you have a party. Yeah, and i love the idea of having movies streamed at home because it really is a lot to get a whole family out to the theaters. You know what, were going to maybe do that this weekend. Watching not only the movies but Something Else going on in the forecast. Lets talk about what to expect because were starting out chilly this morning and this is the same weather that shapes up to be a pleasant day but then well start to see more clouds moving in tomorrow and there may be spotty light sprinkles moving in for the north bay between tomorrow night and sunday morning. After that we have a high fire danger that will be increasing due to some high winds and we know its been so dry out there, but weve gotten a lot of sunshine. If you have solar panels around the bay area you should be able to generate all of your home energy with your solar panels and the amount of Carbon Dioxide were not putting in the atmosphere like planting 21,000 trees across the state. Tomorrow more clouds coming in. Youll get about 87 of your Home Energy Savings and sunday about 89 . So as we look at our temperatures today, its going to be very nice and comfortable. After a cold morning temperatures will reach into the upper 60s for today. Then going into tomorrow we talk about the clouds moving in. There will be a cold front approaching. It doesnt look to bring us a lot of rain but spotty showers late saturday night and then it moves through. A lot of that rain just dries up. Something that comes ahead of some high winds that we may see between sunday night and monday. Taking a look at our wind speed forecast it does show especially in the north bay we could see the winds kicking up over 30 miles an hour and then calming down shortly thereafter. It will be a time well have to watch because we are in an extreme drought right now here in the north bay and so the vegetation is very dry. You add in a high wind and low humidity, and we will have the concern of the red flag warning possible early next week and then maybe even again on thursday. So a couple of things to watch for even though our weather is mostly dry. Vianey, how is it looking right now for the commute . The overall bay area is doing okay. However, if you have to take highway 17, you may want to head out now in both directions because there is a crash that is starting to cause some heavy delays right after alma bridge, the slow lane is blocked. And as you know when one side of the road slows down the other one does as well. So definitely want to head out now. As far as your drive times through the south bay, northbound 101 from highway 85 looking at 19 minutes. Northbound 280 from highway 101 to highway 85 only about eight minutes. Ill send it back to you. Thanks, vianey in for mike this morning. We appreciate it. Coming up next on today in the bay, this story a lot of people are talking about, the tiger attack at a sanctuary.
