The problem first came to light when people started complaining about multiple letters from the Unemployment Department being mailed to their homes. In some cases, dozens of letters. Some addressed to the resident along with others to multiple different names. The people were filing assumed that names but they had no idea how far it went and how much money was stolen. Frankly, still doesnt because at least 1 million claims are still on hold. We cant estimate how much it will end up being, but we are pretty confident its going to be in the billions, probably tens of billions of dollars. Tens of billions of dollars in fraudulent claims. Our consumer investigator will join us on the 6 00 newscast with more questions that he posed to the state auditor about how the thieves got away with a massive fraud scheme against taxpayers so easily. Ever since it washat there were vaccinations for covid there has been a debate vaccines first. The elderly at the tonight list. One of the most elderly spoke about her vaccination and she has a unique perspective on the pandemic. Reporter you know you must have lived a good life 1915. Reporter if after more than a century of it you do what you can to get even more. I got the vaccine, yeah. Reporter last week ursula, all 105 years old of her, went to the Kaiser Permanente Fremont Medical Center to get her first dose of the covid19 vaccine. She says it went well. Ursula, the baby in this centuryold photo, brings a perspective to this pandemic that few others on earth can. She remembers family and friends being among the millions who died during the last great pandemic. The 1918 spanish flu. And another lady that was also my godmother, she died in 25. Reporter her perspective goes well beyond having lived a long life. Its what she has been able to do with it. Its meant she could have a career in the newspaper business and raise a family. Its meant she could take up the sport of skiing in her 70s. And its meant that at age 102 she could surround herself with four generations of her family. They are all so nice. I miss them very much now. Reporter ursula has, indeed, had a full life. Something she wishes for anyone. Getting vaccinated, she says, is simply a step in that direction. I want to tell them they should be thankful that people work so hard to get this vaccine because thats the only way to stop covid virus. I could listen to her stories all day. I want to hear more. Thank you. Very nice. Jeff back with us now. You mentioned earlier in the week there was that turning point midweek if we were going to get hit or if we werent. How did it all fall out . Well, it did really kind of swing back up towards us and stalled out over the south bay yesterday. The Atmospheric River. That correlates with our highest totals. When that Atmospheric River sat over the south bay, you are going to be see on the first map here, thats when we accumulated some of the highest totals. In lo gatos we had 4. 5 inches in two days. San jose now at 2. 40. Santa cruz mountains, bolder creek right in the fire burn zone where the burn scar is, 7. 37 inches. It is a miracle we did not have any major mudslides with that much water in two days. Morgan hill, one the top low elevation totals, currently still stacking up, but right now over 5 inches. So in just two days we saw nearly our entire january monthly rain average. Our rain averages here in the bay area range from 2. 5 to 10 inches. Most cities got close to the Monthly Average in two days, if not higher. Remarkable on the totals. Thankfully, we are on the back side right now. What we have happening is the Atmospheric River is off to the south. We have this disturbance moving in. That will kick that Atmospheric River out of here through the next 4 hours, move it out of california. Its going to bring us a chance of spotty rain and isolated thunderstorm chances. We are continuing to hold on to rainfall tonight. You can see over the eastbound east bay and south bay most consistent activity in the south bay right over morgan hill. This is still one spot that will see heavy rain the next two to three hours, and you will have to watch out for some isolated street flooding in that location. We havent heard of anything big, but keep your eye out. If you approach some water, you dont know the depth of it. Turn around and drive in the other direction. So thats really the nature of what were under as we roll through tonight. These pockets of rain as that disturbance rolls in. I think as we hit tomorrow morning we are holding on it a slight chance of some spotty showers, even into tomorrow afternoon for the mountains, we will try to get some sunshine through the crowds as we roll through tomorrow afternoon. Then as we roll through saturday i think we will get some sun for the east bay, the south bay and the peninsula, but here is the thing. Our next storm system is lining up once we hit 7 00 p. M. On saturday, its going to stall out and we think this could bring higher totals into next week. Tomorrow we start off in the upper 30s and low 40s. Some cold temperatures with that slight chance of a spotty shower. Make sure you have the jacket for the morning and through the afternoon. My daytime highs, 54 santa rosa, 55 san jose, and also 54 in morgan hill. So on the extended forecast we get a break on pretty much friday, saturday and sunday and that rain returning monday and tuesday. Right now totals look to be about a half to 1. 5 inches. So i think once we roll into next week, we might see some concerns up into the north bay if stall out. Thankfully, we havek coming our way the next three days. Looking forward to some sunshine after this. Thanks. Up next at 5 00, buried in the snow for hours. A teenager rescued near tahoe. We will tell you about it next.
