Very hackable, solid, that talks to one of the organizers about what this means for the future of ai . They think that there is often a lack of understanding of what right or wrong even means, plus the calls for help never stop and short staffed Fire Departments cant keep up. We just have to do it. With 80 less people now, a Central FloridaFire Department is getting creative to attract the next generation of firefighters. And liftoff of artemis. One this Rocket Scientist is working on nasas next trip around the moon while working on a mission of her own. Create more diversity in the aerospace industry. The kids call me the rocket lady. What shes doing to fuel new opportunities. Im soledad obrien. Welcome to matter of fact, Google Microsoft chatgpt. There are some of the most recognizable names in tech and leaders in advancing ai or Artificial Intelligence technology or tech that is used to safeguard our banks, our satellite defense systems, our elections. So why would these companies voluntarily agree to let thousands of hackers test the vulnerabilities of their ai models with the white house encouraging them to do so . Its all part of the annual Def Con Hacking Convention being held in las vegas. Raymond chaudry is the former director of twitters meta ethics team and shes one of the coordinators of the event. Raymond chaudry nice to see you. Thank you for joining me so youve invited people to come and try to hack into the ai. What would compel a big company, an ai to want to take part in this . The kinds of problems were tackling with this challenge are actually problems that these companies are all struggling with. How do we understand a massive amount of potential political misinformation or misinformation about particular subgroups in society and different communities and their perspectives . So were building this entire exercise in collaboration with eight different companies. So every major large language model provider, as well as some open source providers and some Smaller Companies as well, theyre all very enthusiastic partners. What they want this exercise to do for them is answer the questions that they dont have the resources to go and answer themselves. What exactly are you asking them to do . We are designing the largest ever exercise is to give people time to interact with eight different generative ai chat bots and find specific harms and bad things that can happen when regular people are using them. And were not doing this by hacking it or tricking the model, but were trying to induce whats called a hallucination when the model is making up facts or saying something thats incorrect or its reflecting a bias that exists in the data. For example, we might ask it what it thinks about gay marriage and compare that to what it thinks about straight marriage and see if theres any internal inconsistencies to that information. Should we assume then that ai and these chat bots are just very hackable, that theyre theyre super vulnerable at this time . Or is this what youre trying to figure out . Yes. Systems can be vulnerable to bad things that can happen. And often these bad things are actually just based on the data that these models are trained on. So the harmful things that happen in the real world are collected by data. And this is used to train models and it occurs in the outputs of these models. What my nonprofits mission is, is to give people the right critical tech thinking skills so that they can engage in a smart way, not that they trust the ai, but that they trust themselves when interacting with the ai. Do you believe with this exercise and the other things that youre doing that you can make these ai platforms less vulnerable or maybe just impermeable to misinformation . Its a step forward. Weve designed this challenge around the bill of rights, which was written by the office of science, technology and policy. And what were demonstrating is what we put into law is something that we can build into practice. So i hope that this is the start of a new new tradition, a new institution and a new way of aligning the laws. We are writing with the technology that we are building. I think that there is often a lack of understand of not just the technology, but what right or wrong even means. And this is where people are increasingly looking to the government to tell us what technology should and shouldnt be doing. I know when it comes to tech, the government often is not leading. The us has actually been a little bit behind other countries, but i do think theyre catching up. I think theres a lot of really good work thats happening and again, im optimistic given the support the white house has of this red teaming exercise, that we can start creating more of these kinds of hands on experiences to provide data and information to help create better policies and laws. It makes me optimistic that you are optimistic. Vermont chaudry nice to talk to you. Thank you so much. Thank you, soledad. Next on matter of fact, theres too much at stake. The latest numbers show that there are nearly 10 million job openings, about twice the number of unemployed people. Some of those Staff Shortages could mean the difference between life and death. Several major cities and rural towns cant find people who are willing to become firefighters. Its hard to nail down an exact total across the country in marion county, florida, the Fire Department is so short staffed it cant keep up with the 911 demand. Emergency calls have doubled there in the last decade. Our correspondent Dan Lieberman has more on how that department is finding creative ways to recruit and serve the community. We had a lot of people who decided they didnt want to do this job anymore. Weve got to figure out this problem. Theres too much at stake. Its the nightmare scenario for us. Fire administrator dr. Lori moore, merrell. So there are departments right now across the us where the shortages are so severe that they have to just shut down operations. Thats correct. Particularly in the volunteer. Guidry our volunteer stations, there are a lot that theres no one to respond. There are places where there is no one coming from miles away. Volunteer and career Fire Departments are experiencing chronic staffing shortages, and chiefs across the nation are sounding the alarm. Right now, im about 80 short. I need a little over 500 uniform personnel. So were just trying to figure out ways to bridge that gap. Marion county in rural Central Florida has one of the most understaffed Fire Departments in the state. It serves a growing population of some 400,000 and includes the largest Retirement Community in the nation. We cant reduce services. We still have 911 calls. We have to run. We just have to do it with 80 less people. So that equates to being busier on your shift. It equates to mandatory overtime, which means tomorrow, maybe you cant go home. When you were scheduled to go home, firefighter ryan lietz knows all too well about mandatory overtime. He used to work an average of 60 hours per week. Now he has to work as much as 100 hours. Sometimes its literally an hour before youre about to get off and you have to make that phone call to your wife. Lets his married with three kids and his wife, sarah has her own demanding job as a nurse and often has to cover for him physically and mental early. It drains you to have to be there for another 24 hours a job and when im home, i like to be home with them and not physically and mentally drained. How do you talk to your kids about your job . Its getting to the point where i dont want anybody that i love to become a firefighter and have to go through this. I still love to to say that im a firefighter. I love to show off for my kids. And when they come to the station, they do get excited. But the most happy they get is when i get home. Some of the highest shortages for firefighters in the whole state of florida are right here in marion county. Why do you think its so bad here . We havent been able to keep up with pay and people see that the mandatory overtimes are here. And and thats happening across the state. But here there seems to be no end. Marion county, as compared to other departments throughout the state, really is the department that has the highest percentage of vacancies. Fire chief Harold Theiss helped lead a statewide survey of Fire Departments to study whats causing the shortages. Im not really sure where the shift turned, where youth were no longer as interested in entering Public Safety as they once did. But somewhere along the line it has happened. This once the public to understand whats at stake. Fewer firefighters responding to emergencies. One of the things that were doing to try to address that is marketing of the fire service. As some claim, we are heroes. And you can see the creativity in these videos. And it uses the imagery of you know, the hero and protecting your community, really trying to hit those emotional words and emotional phrases that attract young people into the business. You guys doing all right . Were focusing locally on trying to hire local people, feeding the fire service through high school programs, through mentorship programs, finding people that maybe cant afford to go to school and hiring them and paying them to go to school. We do really good at hiring people. We have to do a better job at keeping them here, making sure the nations safety net remains strong for everyone. For matter of fact, im Dan Lieberman in florida. Coming up, we got to get out here. We have to let them know its a safe place to come in to meet the Rocket Scientist inspiring the next generation to reach for the stars. Less than 11 of the workforce at nasa is black. Of those, only about 7 are black women. A recent study of private Aerospace Companies paints a very similar picture. Engineer Nicole Cummings is trying to change that. Our correspondent Jessica Gomez visited her in jupiter, florida, where shes both powering the Space Mission and boosting its diversity. And here we go. Four stage engines start at the Kennedy Space center. Last november. And liftoff of artemis one, nasas artemis rocket launch, the Uncrewed Orion spacecraft to the moon. Watching artemis one was fantastic. Nicole cummings was there once it went up to really connect with it and to know that we had footprints on this mission, it was an amazing feeling for the team and even for myself. We have our valves that control our flow. The team at aerojet rocketdyne, an aerospace and Defense Company in jupiter, florida. Its where they build and test engines that help power nasas rockets. I call it the little engine that could and that does. How many people have you trained now . 45 year old cummings is a Deputy Program manager leading the team that builds the rl ten engine, the one that gives the orion spacecraft the final boost it needs to head into lunar orbit. Three, two, one. Start. Its the same engine that will help make history next year when artemis two will send humans around the moon for the first time in more than half a century. We have our first African American male and our first woman. Thats going to be a part of that mission. An important milestone in an industry trying to fuel diversity. Do we have any new target dates as far as getting back to test . I never thought i was going to be in the space industry. It was in high school that nicole joined a club for students of color. I had a teacher who her motive was to get us into engineering, but we thought we were just getting in the club for fun and having a good time. And her father, a first generation immigrant, insisted she take an engineering scholarship offered by Florida Atlantic university. I said to her, engineering is where you should be. Do not select anything thats easy. Select something thats difficult. So how do you write that . Eight divided by two its a message nicole now passes on to her own daughter, melanie. She says that i could do i could be whatever i want. And one she takes on the road. We got to get out here. We have to let them know its a safe place to come into. Hi, ladies. How are you spending much of her free time exposing girls, especially those of color, to careers in engineering and space . Theres a lot of intimidation. I think happens in the minds of girls when it comes to engineering. And its really important for them to see that they can be involved and that there are images of them within the industry and their support there. So its very important for me to try to pull you guys in. This is why im here. The kids call me the rocket lady. Thats my new title in the in the community. As long as they can identify and they feel like they could be a rocket lady to when we look at apollo 11, all those years ago and we look at this artemis mission, it looks very different. Yes, it does. And that is the historic aspect of it. Were evolving. Were getting better. Were reflecting our nation more. And and that is the part that were going to continue to work on. And it starts with getting in the classroom and letting children know that there is a place for them. Please welcome to the stage, Nicole Cummings. Now theres a place for nicole here at Florida Atlantic university where she was inducted into the hall of fame 20 yeaears after graraduating. What i tell a lot of my students that i speak to is dont count yourself out. Just keep putting in that hard work. The perseverance. And once you finish it and you get to the other side, the reward is as great. The reward now being part of history in the making. Back to the moon and beyond in florida, for matter of fact, im Jessica Gomez. Ahead on matter of fact, the ongoing writers and actors strike is taking a financial toll on people on the picket line.
