California is facing a Teacher Shortage so severe that the state School Superintendent held a summit to try to recruit more teachers. Here is nbc bay areas damon trujillo. Reporter we are at captain jason doll elementary and at the first day of school there is already a substitute on campus today. The first day of school has been a thrill in miss ariellas first grade class. Its the upper grades at Franklin Mckinley School District that are cramped. Our goal was to try to keep our fourth and sixth grade class at no more than 28, but that proved to be impossible. A Teacher Shortage bumped that number to 32 students per class. Today the superintendent visited several of his schools. He spent the entire summer trying to recruit new teachers and still failed to teacher short. So substitutes are filling in. One of them in captain jason m dahl special ed class. We have been looking for teachers to fill positions. Reporter she spent the weekend setting up the classroom for her substitute teacher. More legal drama for President Trump who could be hit with a new indictment in georgia. Today the Fulton County District Attorney presented her case to a grand jury. D. A. Fani willis accused mr. Trump of interfering with the 2020 election in the state of georgia. Her evidence includes a 2021 phone call to then secretary of state and in that call mr. Trump was heard saying i just want to find 11,780 votes. This all comes one week before the first republican president ial debate. If he is indicted in atlanta this week as we anticipate we will have the front runner for the republican nomination for president out on bail in four different jurisdictions. Mr. Trump insist he is innocent and he blasted this case on social media today. Abortionrights will be a hot topic as the race for president heats up. Meanwhile individual states work to support restricted those rights. Just last week ohio voters soundly rejected a republican backed measure that would have made it more difficult to change the states constitution by requiring support from 60 of voters rather than majority. Republican leaders in ohio wanted that measure passed because the ballot measures this upcoming november. This would guarantee a womans right to choose. Our political analyst Larry Gersten is here to discuss this topic topic. The situation in ohio, is that a trend or a one off . This is amazing, jenelle. Do you remember the Dobbs Decision . This said this is not the role for the federal government. One by one we have seen states deal with it instead as a result. Six states now have gone ahead and said a woman has a right to choose and we will not go with restrictions. Thats okay, thats interesting, california and vermont, but kentucky, kansas. These kind of states are very unusual. You would not expect it there. Takes us to ohio. Ohio votes and now we see in november they will have that issue in ohio the same way they had it in the six states. Ohio is a pretty red state. It could be another case where abortion is a right in ohio so different from what anyone expected. To answer your question its not a one of, it may well be part of a trend. What about inside the 2024 election . Hot is not the word for this topic. Its hot in 2022 and hot no you see in this chart how important abortion is in your vote. This art says for 29 of the voters th will make their vote on what the candidate says. If the candidate is prchoice they are likely to vote. 29 and for the democrats its 33 . Republans, 10 points less. In a close election that 10 point difference could make the difference in the outcome. Thats how critical this issue is right now. A third of the voters say i am not voting unless i believe my candidate is going the way i want them to go. So they will be voicing that a lot. Whats the take away . The take away is this election will be very close. If you have an hot issue like abortion that has people riled up, that could make the difference one way or another. Right now on the edge for the democrats, but who knows . Right now its hot and its not going away. Dobbs is still alive more than one year later. All right, Larry Gersten, thank you. Did you watch the preseason game of the 49ers and raiders . Yesterday in las vegas, brock purdy and most of the starters on both teams did not play but we did see a lot of trey lance. Remember, he was supposed to be the 49ers franchise quarterback and instead he may not even make this team. He was sacked, hesitant and nearly picked off in the end zone. The raiders crushed the 49ers, 347. Definitely good and bad. It felt good to get that out there. Its gotten off to a rough start. I dont put that all on trey lance by any means. The whole offense was sloppy to start. I didnt enjoy that game by any means today, but a lot of guys got a lot of valuable reps and it gives them a chance to make our team i dont think any 49ers team enjoyed that game. We will see what happens next week and when it comes to trey lance on the backup quarterback situation.
