Puerto rico is under a Tropical Storm watch this morning as dorian closes in. Millions on the caribbean island have been preparing for the storm. Dorian is expected to be a hurricane by the time it moves near puerto rico tomorrow. Meteorologist dave warren of our miami station wfor is tracking the storm. Good morning. Heres the latest with dorian continuing to move through the Windward Islands and into the caribbean here this morning. The latest from the National Hurricane center has the wind at 60 miles per hour, moving west northwest at 14 miles per hour. Concerns now for puerto rico which had a Tropical Storm watch issued late monday. The storm forecast to intensify to a hurricane as it moves through the area. Now heres the concern heres the big question the storm tracks a little farther north it will stay over the water. A little farther south, it will interact with a little more wind shear and terrain and weaken the intensity. The overall consensus from the National Hurricane center track is that it goes back to a Tropical Storm, but it holds together, and theres no question it continues to move to the northwest. The big question will be the intensity. Even if it does lose some of that intensity moving over haiti into the dominican republic, its going over some very warm water as it approaches the southeast here. So that is what we are watching. Likely seeing more watches and warnings going into effect. There is that Tropical Storm watch for puerto rico. Stormy weather here across the southern plains, and that is with a cold front which will continue to march its way east. Showers and storms will develop ahead of that. One thing this will do is keep tropical depression six off the coast. That may intensify to a Tropical Storm, but it moves northeast and into eastern canada. Im dave warren for cbs news. A first of its kind opioid ruling against Johnson Jonhson will be appealed to the state supreme court. Yesterday an oklahoma judge ordered the company to pay the state 572 million for helping fuel the Opioid Crisis. Laura podesta is here in new york. What do we know about Johnson Johnsons response . Reporter they are saying the decision is unfair, that the company did not cause the Opioid Crisis. And theyre looking forward to continuing the court battle with an appeal. In a landmark decision, oklahoma judge thad bulkman said Johnson Johnson was to blame for fueling the states Opioid Crisis. I am entering an abatement plan that consists of costs totaling 572,102. 28. Reporter that fine falls short of the 17 billion the states attorney general was seeking. The verdict marked the first time a corporation has been found responsible for the painkiller abuse epidemic that began some two decades ago. Defendants caused an Opioid Crisis that is evidenced by increased rates of addiction, overdose deaths. Reporter the case began in 2017 when oklahoma sued Johnson Johnson, purdue pharma, and teva pharmaceuticals. The lawsuit accused them of aggressively marketing opioids while significantly downplaying the risks of addiction. Teva and purdue settled for a combined total of about 355 million. Lawyers for Johnson Johnson called the decision unfair and immediately said they would appeal. Johnson johnson did not cause the opioid abuse crisis here in oklahoma or anywhere in this country. Reporter the damages awarded to oklahoma are intended to fund an abuse Abatement Program that would cover the states addictionrelated expenses. And in october, an even bigger case against multiple pharmaceutical Companies IncludingJohnson Johnson is slated for trial in ohio. Mr. Trump says prospects for a deal are better now than at any time since negotiations began between the two countries last year. Before leaving the summit, g7 leaders pledged 20 million to fight wildfires in the amazon. Were learning this morning brazil rejected the offer. A senior brazilian official said maybe the money would be better spent on reforesting europe. More than 80,000 wildfires have been reported in brazil this year. Many started by farmers clearing land. More than 3,500 square miles of forest have burned an area roughly the size of Yellowstone National park. Seven children and four adult were removed from those vehicles. One witness described the scene as terrifying. I heard someone scream kids are in the car, and jumped out to do my best to try to get as many kids out of the van as i could. The victims were taken to area hospitals where at least two children died. The suspect was also hurt in the crash. Hes in custody facing multiple charges. Its been two months since a deadly shooting inside a california costco. And for the first time, members of the victims family are speaking out. The shooting killed d Kenneth French who was mentally ill and injured his parents. This was back in june. An offduty lapd officer told investigators he shot in selfdefense. But the French Family says thats not true. I dont know this is not to shoot twice. I even said please. I was pleading with our son for our lives he was shot in the back. The family is filing a claim against the city of los angeles and the lapd officer who was involved. They also want cell phone video of the shooting to be released. Up to 30 women will get a chance to speak at a hearing in new york city today about jeffrey epstein. Prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss sex trafficking charges since epstein is dead. His death this month has been classified as a suicide. Epstein had pleaded not guilty to all the charges. A judge says todays hearing will give prosecutors, epsteins lawyers, and any victims a chance to speak.
