Thats the only good news. And then rain over the burn scar in Sonoma County as well. Its not going to be over yet. Things will ease up. Rainfall amounts have not been terrifically impressive in the lowlands, but up top weve gotten more than 6 inches of rain in big sur, 2 inches in san rafael. Theres more to come as well. It really blew in here this afternoon with a lot of wind and a lot of rain just as people were starting to hit home after the long holiday. One of the most dangerous areas was up in the Santa Cruz Mountains. There was wind and fog and rain that led to scenes like this on highway 17. A car traveling northbound near summit road lost control on the twisty road and spun out, striking the center divide, and coming to rest facing the opposite direction. The driver walked away from it, but the crash brought highway traffic to a stand still, and it was just one of many mishaps that also included mudslides. The roadways and storm drains filled up with water making the already challenging drive treacherous. Everything is a lot more wet, so you have to take it easy or slow down. Joe vazquez is in concord tonight with more on what led up to the shooting. Reporter Concord Police say 2 of their officers opened fire on a man who appeared to be attacking his own elderly mother with a knife. Assault and shots fired. Reporter the first 911 call came in just before noon. Concord police say an elderly couple ages 85 and 90 said their son was acting erratically and possibly under the influence of alcohol. They said he had a plastic gun and a knife. He had issues in the past. Psychological and drugs. Hes been out in the yard before and had some issues. Reporter neighbor steve kramer watched as the 60yearold son was out of control on the front lawn. Police say they tried to talk to him and deescalate the situation, but the man ran back inside and at some point assaulted both of his parents. They located the son straddling his mother while holding a knife. 2 officers used their service weapons. It was like a semiautomatic pop, pop, pop, and then it was done. Reporter the couple was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries and their son pronounced dead on the scene. Its sad actually, the father was walking out and after it had happened, he heard the gunshots and kind of turned around and that just broke my heart because it was like knowing your son is probably, you know, whether he was acting an idiot or not, its still your child. The general tendency is focus in the south bay mountains and for it to ease up. Wind and rain begin to relax in the north and central bay on monday, but continue to focus on the Santa Cruz Mountains and south. There will be a shower chance through midweek, so its going to be overcast and drippy, but not tremendous rain unless youre in high elevations. When you look at the time lapse of the radar and look at the echos, it just looks like a mattress exploded. The echos are all over the place.
