KPIX CBS Evening News With Norah ODonnell July 13, 2024

That no one, not even the president , is safe from coronavirus. The white house now confirms one of President Trumps personal valets has tested positive for covid19. Cbs news has learned the valet, a member of the navy, assigned to work at the white house, served the president his meals. And while Officials Say the president has tested negative, the exposure is raising questions about whether the commander in chief should be required to follow his own administrations guidelines and quarantine for two weeks. The president s valet is now among the more than 1. 2 million confirmed cases here in the u. S. More than 75,000 have died nationwide in the past two months. And as we come on the air tonight, there is yet another sobering number that illustrates the toll of the virus 3. 2 million more americans filed for unemployment in the last week, pushing the total number out of work since the crisis began to 33. 5 million. The Unemployment Rate, which is due out tomorrow, has not been this high since the great depression. Tonight, this graph showing weekly jobless claims over the itst 15 years, really says it all. Theres a lot to get to all. Theres a lot to get to, and our correspondents are covering it. Cbs ben tracy is going to lead us off tonight from the white house. And, ben, the president calls this the invisible enemy, and now its invaded the white house. Reporter it sure has. These white house valets are members of the military, and they do all sorts of things here at the white house, including laying out the president s clothes. We have learned this particular valet was close enough to serve the president meals. The president , a selfdescribed, germaphobe, said it was a little bit strange to find out one of his white house valets tested positive for coronavirus. Ive had very little contact, personal contact with this gentleman, know who he is, good person. But ive have very little contact. Reporter cbs news has learned the valet started feeling sick on tuesday, and ets, who have not always been valets, who have not always been wearing masks, are typically assigned to the white house while some travel with the president. But President Trump and Vice President pence are now being tested every day, instead of just once per week. In fact, i had one yesterday. And had one today. And its negative. Mike just had a test, and its negative. Reporter but if the president and the valet came within six feet of each other, the president should quarantine, according to cbs news contributor dr. David agus. What you worry about is that valet, when theyre breathing or talking, can actually expel droplets. Those droplets can stay in the air for a period of time, and the president could have inhaled them. Reporter cbs news has learned that the white house rejected a centers for Disease Control document detailing how states can safely reopen everything from parks and restaurants, to day cares and churches. The white house found the guidelines overly specific, and the president wants those decision made by state department and local officials. But democrats say its dangerous for the white house to encourage states to reopen without a plan for nationwide coronavirus testing. And right now, when its killing 70,000 americans, he still refuses to stand up for a National Testing plan, because hes worried it might make him look bad. Reporter now, doctors say there can be a lag time between when you are exposed to the virus and when you would test positive on a test for it, and in that time, you can be infectious. Despite that, President Trump o qs not plan to quarantine. Norah. Odonnell Extraordinary Development there, ben, thank you. Turning now to the economy. Just to put in perspective how fast its fallen in february, the Unemployment Rate was at 3. 5 . Thats a 50year low. Tomorrows report could put it anywhere from 15 to 20 . Frustration with continued restrictions is boiling over. Two workers in this mcdonalds in Oklahoma City were shot after asking customers to leave the closed dining room. Nationwide, 46 states have loosened restrictions, even though the numbers still show covid cases rising in 28 states. Are we going to see more people getting sick . Of course. And late today, ohios governor announced Indoor Dining at restaurants can begin again in two weeks. But that is not the case here in california, where its still takeout only. It could be another month or two before restaurants here fully reopen. Norah. Odonnell carter, thank you. Tonight, under pressure from the trump administration, at least three major Meat Processing plants are ramping up production again. Pork plants in iowa, south dakota, and minnesota are back online, despite worker safety concerns and confusion over federal guidelines. Cbs Dean Reynolds has been following the derailment of the food supply chain, and tonight he takes us inside a plant linked to more than 1,000 cases of coronavirus. Reporter tyson foods biggest pork plant is reopening in waterloo, iowa, but its workers are wary. Everybody is scared. Everybody. I dont know, because i need money. Reporter the Company Released a video today of what they saw inside partitioned stations, spaced seating, and daily temperature checks. But while some companies saw the c. D. C. Plant safety guidelines as a road map to follow, others thers they were merely noted they were n recommendations. This south dakota smithfield plant, where 800 workers were infected, is also operating, but testing is voluntary. However confusing, the effects of the slowdown in meat production are clear this meat aisle went from simply fresh, to simply empty. And now some officials seem to be blaming the workers, not the plants. Congresswoman ann kuster says health and Human Services secretary alex azar told her and other lawmakers, its the workers home and social lives that are spreading the virus. This is really hard for us. Reporter it hurts to hear that, says san twin, whose mother, a worker at a now operating j. B. S. Odonnell now to a stunning reversal by the Justice Department in the russia investigation. Today, the attorne today, the attorney general told federal prosecutors to drop their case against michael flynn, President Trumps First National security adviser. Flynn had pleaded guilty to lying to the f. B. I. And was fired by the president. But, after at first cooperating with the mueller investigation, flynn changed his tune, and his lawyers, along with conservative media, lobbied for the case to be dropped. Well, tonight, in a cbs news exclusive, attorney general william barr explains his decision to our Catherine Herridge. Reporter in our exclusive interview this afternoon inside the department of justice, the attorney general said he was obligated to drop the charges against the president s former National Security adviser. Our duty, we think is to dismiss the case. Reporter its a stunning turn of events for flynn, who in december 2017, pleaded guilty to lying to the f. B. I. About his discussions with the Russian Ambassador after the president ial election. Flynn was ultimately fired by the president about three weeks into the job, having also lied to the Vice President about his contacts with the russians. Flynn lied, and its like they ruined his life. Its very unfair. Reporter but the departments filing says the f. B. I. s interview with flynn was unjustified and done without any legitimate basis. A crime cannot be established here. They did not have a basis for a counterintelligence investigation against flynn at that stage. Reporter does the fact remain that he lied . Ut not to be cnow, people sometimes plead to things that turn out not to be crimes. Reporter what should americans take away from your actions in the flynn case today . I want to make sure that we restore confidence in the system. Theres only one standard of justice. Reporter President Trump, who has long claimed that flynn was railroaded, called him a hero. He was an innocent man. Reporter are you doing the president s bidding . Wsno, im doing the laws bidding. Bidding. Reporter you know youre going to take a lot of incoming, as they say in the military, for for this decision. Im prepared for that. But i also think its sad that nowadays, these partisan feelings are so strong, that people have lost any sense of justice. Reporter flynn welcomed the news with a tweet of his grandson. And former f. B. I. Director jim comey, who started the investigation into the president , voiced his displeasure on twitter, saying, the department had lost its way. When history looks back on this decision, how do you think it will be written . Well, history is written by the winners, so it largely depends on whos writing the history. Reporter flynns fate rests with a federal judge here in washington. He can dismiss the case or, according to one legal expert, he could call for a hearing with all of the parties, given the extraordinary circumstances. Tonight, the attorney general emphasized to cbs news that they continue to investigate other aspects of the f. B. I. Russia probe. Norah.
