KPIX CBS News Sunday Morning July 13, 2024

This pandemic looms large over most of your waking hours. But you also might find it the stuff of dreams, bad dreams as well. As Susan Spencer will report in our cover story. Life in quarantine can get a little bland. But dreams in quarantine, theyre a whole different story. Whats the most outlandish dream youve heard so far. The most outlandish scary dream is where oprah was rounding up people to be her audience, and her henchmen were imprisoning them in a giant warehouse that had mattresses spaced six feet apart. How about you, any weird dreams lately . Ahead on sunday morning. Pauley what does a standup comedian do when a shutdown leaves him without a live audience. If he is Jerry Seinfeld, youll find him in conversation with us. Everyones life sucks. My life sucks, too, perhaps not quite as much. Reporter when Jerry Seinfeld taped his new netflix special a few months ago, he had no idea how relevant it would be today. Reporter the whole idea that everyones life sucks seems appropriate right now. Yes. It is also great, youre alive. Reporter stuck at home with Jerry Seinfeld, later on sunday morning. Pauley add rock star graham nash of the lives of performers sidelined by the pandemic. This morning he is talking to Anthony Mason for the record. Reporter vietnam, woodstock, protests, sinner ansinger and activist grm nash has seen a lot over the decades, but nothing has come close to this. Weve been talking a long time over the years, and it has never been this weird, has it. Teach your children well reporter words from an english, coming up on sunday morning. Pauley rita braver finds the class of 2020 lamenting the loss of caps, gowns, and promise. We discuss home life with a studio in the basement. Seth doane takes in the view from a balcony. Plus lee cowan on isolation. Steve hartman, jim gaffigan, even some cartoons from the new yorker, on this sunday morning, the 17th of may, 2020. Well be back after this. Pauley bad enough that coronavirus anxieties complicate everyday life, worse yet, when those anxieties become the stuff of dreams. Our cover story is reported by Susan Spencer. Reporter poet jackie wang fills her quarantine days with the peaceful sound of her harp, but her dreams at night tell a different story. I had an airplane dream, where we were flying into a dark cloud, and i was, like, oh, no, this plane needs to be grounded. This is not good. Well, there is a metaphor. Yeah, exactly. Reporter metaphors fill the pages of her dream journal, which these days reads like a psychological thriller. I dreamed that someone dreamed of a dead person on a gurney. Reporter can you summarize for me the general impact you feel that the pandemic has had on your dreams . It has made my dreams more vivid, and ive been having dreams with recurring apocalypse and economic desperation. Reporter and then there is this familiar theme. I had a dream that i was preparing for my wedding, but i had too much cases of toilet paper. [laughter] reporter you cant be too careful. Exactly. Reporter from toilet paper nightmares to tidalwaves consuming new york, these days reports of bizarre, pandemicdriven dreams are everywhere. I dreamed that i had to do my show, but i had to do it some place where no one could find me. Most people who are chronically sleep deprived are staying at home. Reporter so the longer you sleep, the more likely you are to dream. Yes. Reporter this psychologist is studied dreams after 9 11 and is now collecting pandemic dreams, more than 6,000 so far. The single takeaway from the survey is the worlds dreams are more anxious than at normal periods and times. Reporter and less literal than dreams after 9 11. I see fewer dreams overtly about the pandemic than people who dreamed about buildings falling down or the planes crashing into them, and somewhat more mes phors metapho. And i think it is because the virus is an invisible menace. Reporter one popular iimage. Ive seen images of every kind of bugs, flying or racing at the dreamer, grasshoppers with vampire fangs. I think it is partly because we use the word bug as slang. Ive got a bug or a virus. Reporter what is the outlandish dream youve heard so far . It is where oprah was rounding up people to be her audience, and her henchmen were imprisoning them in a giant warehouse that had mattresses spaced six feet apart. At the end of the dream, oprah bursts into the warehouse, ready to do her show, and in show biz style, she says some of her guests today are getting a very big surprise, and she pulls out a chainsaw and comes at the dreamer. Reporter thats a good one. Unlike the nightmare of a chainsawwielding oprah, some pandemic dreams simply reflect reality. Ive had a couple of dreams where everybody is in little zoom boxes. Reporter thats how everybody feels right about now, were living in zoom boxes. Right. Reporter artist Sandra Haynes had one spectacular dream, now part of the harvard study. She was an antibody, a super hero fighting off the virus, which took the form of a ferocious dog. So what i did was grabbed the leash of the dog, and it was swinging it around over my head. Reporter which is very dramatic. Right. It is, very dramatic. Reporter the egyptians thought dreams were messages from the gods, the greeks saw them as visions from the dead, and Sigmund Freud was sure dreams involved sex. Why do you we dream . No one knows for sure. But during rem sleep, where we mostly dream, this is where our memories get consolidated. Reporter professor Michael Nadorff focuses less on the meaning of dreams and more on how we can control them, especially the scary one. This is the cool thing there is a treatment call universal imaginary therapy. We take the dream you have and tell you to change it any way you want. And we want you to practice it, using visual imagery, for twice a day, for 10 minutes at a time. And they start having the dream they created. Reporter he says it worked with one client whos father had passed away before his grandchildren were born. And he said, you know, i would love to have a dream where im going to the park and im taking my kids, and my dad is there and they gets to see them playing and he gets to meet my kids. So we gave it a try, and the very next session, he comes in and just tells me, you know, in tears, i had that new dream and its just so meaningful. Reporter are you worried about peoples general Mental Health because of the dreams theyre having . No. I think people are having, for the most part, very healthy, normal reactions to this situation. Reporter with one exception, says professor barrett. The Health Care Workers are having fullon traumatic nightmares. There was one italian anesthesiologist who was trying to intubate somebody in a dream, and he fell backwards out of the window out of the hospital, clutching the patient with him as he fell. And he landed on the ground okay, and the patient was decapitated. Reporter ooh she says for those suffering ptsd, counselling may be needed. Reporter as for the rest of us, like jackie wang do you see your dreams as some sort of coping mechanism . I think it is a coping mechanism that you dont actually ask for. As this platform, and its bigger cousin, the terrace, has become standin venues for performances. New york, new york, new york reporter and even courts for play. I think we are fairly wellknown as those americans over there on the balcony. Reporter cellist matt walker and zenaba planned to write their fifth travel book and perform until italys lockdown made that almost impossible. Reporter did you ever imagine you would be playing on a balcony . No. We had never thought of using this space as any type of concert venue. We wanted to use this space as a grill and drinking venue. Reporter they bought this place about an hour from rome because of its stunning view, the town of siriano navono. When that became just about the only pla place they could play, they started making videos and posting them live on facebook. Soon the town started piping these balcony performances into loud speakers. This is one way we could still perform, that we could do something positive for our community and also not go crazy in quarantine. This is true. Reporter is this coronavirus making us more appreciative of the balcony . I think the balcony has really come into its own in this period. Reporter liz leave lev is a romebased historian. We met her, well, where else . It is the most famous balcony, i would argue. I would even say it is more famous than the queen of englands balcony, but that might get me into trouble. Reporter thats the grand loggia at st. Peters basilica we connect balconies with things like the pope, but there are also bad leaders who use balconies. It is the same thing, you get a platform and sometimes they use it for good and sometimes they use it for ill. Reporter from balconies, ben moussaoui and hitly exalted their people to war. Reporter and in pompeii, buried by volcanic ash nearly 2000 years ago, we learned how they uncovered evidence for the ancient appreciation for the structure. This is the balcony. Reporter centuries later, those balconies were all over europe. The next thing you know, you have the pope in 1475, taking the king of naples around, as he looks at the rickety balconies and he says, you will never have control of your city if women throwing things from the balconies are stopping all of the troops. Reporter you can receive a drive by blessing or just kill time. Father and son team, fabio and Jacopo Mastrangelo made the most of their eght plus weeks in isolation at a breathtaking perch above rome. Were taking a lot of time to prepare every day a different song. Every day is a premiere. Reporter a premiere on your balcony . Yes. Reporter he place to an empty piazza navona, but a big crowd online. Theyve seen neighbors put up flags for their performances. It is community redefined. Transcending a message, a message of hope. Reporter now in her tontiny town, she is mourning the moment she didnt get with college friends, and hoping her new job as a financial analyst is secure. Do you think people of your generation ever expected to have to face these kinds of challenges . Not this one specifically, no. I think it has made me appreciate the nobelity that goes into the role all the more. Not just doctors, p. A. S, nurses, all of the hospital staff. Reporter and wisconsin chancellor Rebecca Blank urges all seniors to study how their forebearers rose to challenges, from world war ii to vietnam to 9 11.
