This is the walgreens across the street from city hall where the windows were smashed. The alarm is still going off and there is graffiti, as you can see, as well. This, again, one of many scenes throughout the area. This is across the street at 14th and broadway where the chase bank was broken into, looted and defiled overnight. It has been a very violent night, and luckily things are calm right now. We want to show you some of the action from last night, everything that started with a nonviolent demonstration. That is before the fringe group started the damage, breaking windows, looting businesses, large and small. Marchers took to the streets just before 7 00 last night. This broke out about two hours later with people fanning out throughout downtown, setting fires and breaking into stores and other businesses. The target at broadway and 27th street was demolished. Also a car dealership nearby where cars were stolen, others were set on fire. Most of this occurring without any police insight. The police engaged the crowd earlier and several officers were hurt by thrown objects late into the night. That is what devon was talking about, dose seven oak glen officers that were injured and it is basically very dangerous for them to be confronting protesters at this point. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars of damage was done. Here live at 14th and broadway you can see the aftermath of one of many fires that is still smoldering. This is the dumpster. You can see this picture of several hours later that there is not even any authority at the scene. This is a massive amount of damage for them to try to clean up or even assess at this point. We are keeping an eye on this. I spoke with a gentleman that was here for the protest and he showed me some video he shot. It is massive amounts of destruction. Reporter this guy seemed more like an onlooker and was not part of the damage or the crime, for sure. You have two factions, the people demonstrating at around 7 00 p. M. They were doing it peacefully and then you have the people that seem to be bent on destruction. It is impossible detail right now what sort of protest may lead to Something Like this again. Reporter at 9 30 friday night protesters started smashing the windows of chase bank, and the walgreens across the street was vandalized and soon after a fire started in the building. What started as a peaceful protest quickly turned violent. The day started with the march of north on broadway, and then back south as the protesters headed to the Oakland Police department. They were met by line of officers, but the protest initially remained peaceful even though the anger was brewing. The frustration was shared by all here tonight. Until enough people decide that every life that matters, and it is power to the people, right . Reporter the streets of oakland looked like a war zone by the end of the night with a tugofwar between those that were focused on the message, and those that were here to cause trouble. We are praying for no violence or anything. We need to do this in peace. Reporter the protesters left a wake of destruction for miles but in the end they hope their message was heard. Also ahead, we get a close look at the vandalism during the last night protest in oakland with the window shattered at a local bank. I am anne makovec in oakland and you can see the damage from the last night protest, and you can see window shattered. Thinking ahead of time wouldve done the trick against some of these demonstrators that were bent on destruction. You can see they tried to set a small fire over there. Across the way at the Oakland City Center some of the cleanup is underway as they are boarding up the businesses. At this point its hard to tell how many businesses were hit but it looks like potentially dozens and the rights stemming from what started as a peaceful demonstration. Heres what happened last night on 880. Marchers took to the streets just before 7 00 in about two hours before that the angry mob stormed the roadway at 880 and webster street which shut down the roadway in both directions for about a half hour. The chp and Oakland Police needed to get that freeway clear. But otherwise, here at the street level, they really had to decide which events they would give their attention to. It was worth it as far as the confrontations that would be ensuing with these demonstrators. It looks like, for the large part, that the cops just sort of backed up when it comes to the vandalism on the street level. I am anne makovec live in oakland from kpix 5. As i walk over here a little bit more, you see more broken windows. Lets walk over here, more damage on this side of the chase bank. This is the bus shelter in the glass. Most of this happened within the last six hours but it is starting to quiet down about three hours ago. Slowing it down look at the last hour and you can see the strikes of lightning showing up in the north bay. This is the same batch that was over much of the east bay three hours ago drifting up north now. Is not a lot left now with a few showers showing up in far Sonoma County. Here are the rainfall totals for california as a whole in a bit but first lets come back to the bay area. We will keep the rain going in the north bay with a few scattered showers as i play this ahead until 9 00 a. M. The best from the storm happened overnight. But having said that, we are not entirely done with it. The skies will look storming today and a small chance of a few isolated showers left over, but not really getting a lot out of this and by the evening we are done. Looking at the rainfall totals, maybe another 500s of an inch of rain but not much measurable anywhere else. As we change our perspective look up will happen to the far northern fifth of the state toward crescent city, eureka and lets put the numbers on that. We get over 1. 5 inches of rain today on the far north coast which is out of the ordinary for this time of the year. This is a very unique system and we miss out on the bulk of thexcitement but not all of it. Look at the view from the Salesforce Tower looking down to the south with light rain. There is not a lot to that. The storms appear to not have the same structure to them that we will see much lightning in the south bay. Heres what it looks like over the san jose, but we cannot rule out the possibility of straight Lightning Strike through the morning. The possibility is there to the first half of the day.
