For that and the latest coronavirus numbers, were joined by dr. Amesh adalja, senior collar at the Johns Hopkins center for health security. Good morning. First off, state Health Department officials are urging americans to stay at home this Holiday Weekend. You know, a lot of folks already have their plans. Whats the message . Whats the message to those who will certainly be out celebrating this holiday . The message is that every time you take any activity, theres always going to be some risk of you transmitting or acquiring this virus. That doesnt mean you have to stay at home and not do anything. It means that you cannot act as if were not in a pandemic. You need try and follow as much as possible social distancing rules, washing your hands a lot, not touching your face, wearing Face Coverings as needed in order to minimize the risk of you acquiring it or spreading the virus to someone. This is the new normal Going Forward until there is a vaccine. We have to get used to lifting in this era where there is this risk every time we step out the door. A majority of states are seeing an increase in cases, certain areas significantly. Some states are also seeing a rise in hospitalizations. What do you expect the month of july to look like . Its probably going to look just as it has looked in late june, meaning that were going to see more cases, were going to see more hot spots pop up. The key question is will we see hospitals under stress. I think thats what we have to keep in mind. Were trying to avoid a repeat of what happened in the early days of the pandemic where we were worried about ppe, ventilators. We havent heard so much about that, but there are places like arizona, houston, where we are thinking about how are they going to sustain the surge of patients. I think thats what to keep in mind. Were going to get cases, we have to keep them to a level thats manageable by the Health Departments and hospitals, through contact trace, so we dont go into that crisis mode again. Weve seen states implement some form of mandatory mask wearing in public. Do you believe all states should implement that . Right now we have many people out there that have very mild symptoms, maybe no symptoms, and they might be contagious. A Face Covering serves as source control so youre less likely to spread it. I think while we have all of these people out there, it makes sense to take this simple measure in order to stop transmission from occurring. It doesnt necessarily have to be a mask. It could be a face shield, as well. There are a couple of options here. Now that the consensus is that this is one way to decrease the spread. Theres so many people who dont realize theyre infected that are out there. Also want to ask you, youve recently written about the need for athome diagnostic testing it. Why is that important for right now and also in the future . Weve had this whole pandemic be marred by testing failure after testing failure. Were still talking about testing even though were doing 600,000 tests per day. Home diagnostic testing is a way to really empower patients, to be able to test themselves. It would alleviate lines at testing centers. Its a whole new paradigm of thinking about how we might manage Infectious Disease emergencies in the future. We do this for hiv. There is technology for influenza out there that could be adapted to coronavirus. There is a lot of political will now. I think we could call on some of congress funders to try and push this type of technology forward. It will be something that would change the way we think about mix, give us pandemics, give us advice about whats out there, and empower patients to take health into their own hands. Interesting to hear about that. The question is how long it would take. Dr. Amesh adalja, thank you so much for your time. Thank you. The world is now battling more than 11 million cases of the coronavirus. The global death toll tops 525,000 this morning. In england the lifting of restrictions is known as super saturday. When customers arrive, staff should register their names and numbers and keep that information for three weeks to help trace any infections. Groups should be limited to six people spaced at least three or foe feet apart. And live gigs and standing at the bar are not allowed. Wearing masks will be optional. One english city that wont be joining in the festivities is leister. It went back into lockdown because of a speak in infections. Authorities are warning that other cities could face the same fate if people arent careful. Theyve also threatened to close beaches after thousands of people flocked to the coast last weekend to enjoy the hot weather. Britain has the highest covid19 death toll in europe.
