Every step of the way. This morning rita braver will spend some time with jill biden. We lift each other up. Reporter despite the demands of being a political spouse, jill biden has always maintained her career as a Community College teacher. And now she could make history. Do you think youll keep teaching if you become first lady . I hope so. Reporter really . If we get to the white house, im going to continue to teach, yeah. Reporter ahead on sunday morning, life with jill biden, not just a day at the beach. Pauley then it is on to a legend of popular music by the name of james taylor. Hhe has been going strong for more than 50 years. And as i found out earlier this year, he is eager to share his memories. Ive seen fire and ive seen rain reporter his voice is unmistakable. Good night, moonlight lady reporter so is the way he picks that guitar. That is a song im proud of. I think it came out really well and i worked hard on it. Reporter how old were you . I guess i was 20. Pauley a visit with james taylor later on sunday morning. Pauley it is clear and protective, and found in packages everywhere. But is bubble wrap art . Yes, says lee cowan. Call it pop art. Reporter one destruction of bubble wrap, it is hardly considered a crime, unless, of course, youre artist bradley hart, whos canvas is bubble wrap. Really . What do you use bubble wrap for . To protect things that are important to us. To me, it is memories. Reporter the man who paints in a bubble, ahead on sunday morning. Pauley and Jill Schlesinger gives us the lowdown on Higher Education in this era of covid. And jim axelrod returns to another challenging time at the white house, the times of president gerald ford and the man who documented them. Shabbos kestenbaum takes us for a spin in an r. V. , suddenly the way to go. Well have the latest on that horrific explosion in beirut. And some thoughts from jim gaffigan. Its sunday morning, august 9th, 2020. And well be back after this. Pauley like almost every other aspect of our lives these days, back to school has special meaning in the midst of a pandemic. As returning students in many of our universities are now learning firsthand. Jill schlesinger has our cover story. You need me to put these seats down . Reporter the last time the university of mississippi campus was full of students was in may. They have come to clear out their dorms after the coronavirus chased them home in march. It was hard because everyone was kind of, like, finally coming together, bonding and getting close, all of my friends, and then we all had to leave. Reporter olivia fuller spent most of the Spring Semester taking Classes Online at home in chicago. Not ideal, said her mother, kim. Im more concerned about her not being not having her College Experience with her friends than i am anything. Reporter now olivia is heading back to school for the fall semester. Were all packed up. Kim, are you sending her off with 5,000 masks and gloves and instructions to be very, very careful . Are you being the mother that every mother is, basically . Were sending her with masks, and were sending her with common sense laughing . Common sense and masks. Reporter but it wont be the same. Classes will be a combination of online and in person. Theyre not all online. I have two hybrid classes. One is my chemistry class and the other is the nutrition class. The hybrid means sometimes youll meet and person and some stuff will be on line. Weve had to rethink everything we do. Reporter noel is the provost at mississippi university. Theyre working hard to keep the coronavirus offcampus. There are lots of protocols put in place to prevent the virus from spreading. That includes keeping people six feet apart, the instructor being 10 feet away from the closest student and having face masks for the instructors and for the students. That cuts our classroom capacity down dramatically. Reporter only a quarter of the countrys colleges and universities are planning to hold classes primarily in person this fall. Slightly more will be mostly online, and 16 will be a hybrid of the two. And with weeks to go before the semester starts, over a quarter of schools have yet to determine how classes will be taught. Robert kelchin is an associate professor of Higher Education at Seton Hall University in new jersey. The Fall Experience on campus will some combination of a monastery and a minimum security prison. Reporter that doesnt sound fun to me. It may not be the most fun thing. Is it better than living home with your parents, maybe. Is it safer than some other alternatives . Maybe. Is it going to be what students think of the College Experience . Absolutely not. Reporter but online has its fans. Queens college, part of the City University of new york, is in the shadow of manhattan. At queens, summer courses were only offered online. Pla plasma is predominantly water. Reporter as will 99 of fall classes. Online was done well, and it really works. Reporter frank wu is the new president of queens college. Our summer enrollment jumped 30 , to record levels, because so many people are interested in the online option. Reporter so tell me what does it feel like looking at this quad, this beautiful quad, and there is nobody here . Yeah. It feels empty, serene, beautiful, but we want to see it packed again hopefully in the future. Reporter Carmine Couloute is a graduate student at queens. By studying on line, she has also been able to hold down two jobs. And she is planning to continue online courses at queens, as well as at the university of chicago. It sounds like you have done pretty well with online learning. Yes. Reporter have you gotten better at certain things because it is remote . I have gotten better at certain things. Im back to my acvism. Sactivism. And making sure i pute aside for school work, also. Reporter how were your grades last semester . Did you have an uptake or a downgrade . Youre talking to a 4. 0er. Reporter what do you miss about going into a class physicall right. Part of the College Experience is that facetoface connection. It is about networking, about socializing, meeting new people from all different backgrounds, which queens specifically thrives on. And having that cut out from you, it definitely takes a crucial and significant part of the College Experience totally out the window. Reporter kestenbalm is on a tight budget and says online isnt what he signed up for. I had tuition due last week from queens college, with the same price. Im not sure what the plan is, but i do know i paid for services i know im not going to be receiving. If anyone walked into a supermarket and they were charged x amount for a product they dont know they were receiving, that would be ridiculous. Reporter 93 of undergraduates say tuition should be lower if classes are online. Some schools are offering tuition rebates, usually around 10 , but others may struggle just to stay in business, let alone give money back. The challenge with discounts is colleges still have to pay their bills, they still have to pay faculty to teach and staff to be there for students. Atthe end of the day, students are still getting those college credits. Reporter so the lesson planned for this fall includes less inperson collaboration, and forget about going to Football Games and big parties. The coronavirus is leaving its mark, perhaps permanently. Queens College President frank wu. How does the pandemic change the outlook for Higher Education . The pandemic changes everything for us. I started this job only three weeks ago, and my friends, they all said, oh, this must be a really hard time to be a College President. And i explain, no, actually it is much easier. We have an external threat we must respond to. You cant ignore it. This is a crisis, but its a crisis that we need to respond to and turn to our advantage. Reporter some schools, including rice university, have already started welcoming back students. Notre dame starts classes tomorrow, and olivia fuller is back on campus at ole miss. Down that way are where the fresh man dorms are. Reporter the fall semester doesnt start for two weeks, but she is ready for class, even if for now she will rarely be in a classroom. Hopefully if everyone does what were supposed to do and social distances and wears masks, slowly but surely, semester by semester, we can get back but surely, semester by semester, we can get back to normal. Youre on it. Exercising often and eating healthy . Yup, on it there too. You may think youre doing all you can to manage type 2 diabetes and heart disease. On it with jardiance. Killer attitude. Nevor hydration. Neutrogena® hydro boost. The 1 hyaluronic acid moisturizer delivers 2x the hydration for supple, bouncy skin. Neutrogena®. Pauley bubble wrap, handy for packing and really fun to pop. But as lee cowan shows us, it truly takes a gifted person to think of it as pop art. Reporter georges idea of relaxing on a sunday afternoon may look pretty crowded in this socially distanced world of art, but it is one of the most reproduced works ever. Reporter but you may never have seen it quite the way artist bradley hart sees it. His canvas is bubble wrap, premade pixels that allow him to immortalize the dizzying dots in plastic. We know what youre thinking because, well, we were, too. Popping bubble wrap is alarmingly addictive. And dont even think about popping it around the bubble wrap artist. I love bubble wrap. I love the sound of bubble wrap popping. I hate the sound of bubble wrap popping in my studio, it means that something is screwed up or somebody is messing with my material. Reporter he spends weeks turning the ubiquitous Packing Material into art. From portraits of einstein and Biggie Smalls to scenes of wall street and central park. There are lots of colors that are beside each other, that when you step back, trade a different color. Im playing with the optic of how color resolves on your eyeballs. Reporter bubble wrap has always been full of surprises. It was invented by two engineers back in 1957, originally to be sold as textured wallpaper. The wallpaper never caught on, but bubble wraps cushioning capacity certainly did. It even helped cushion a blow to hart himself back in 2003, when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It was really scary, and they said, there is no easy way to say this, you have m. S. , and i thought my life was over. Reporter for years he was reluctant to stick himself with needles as part of his treatment. But has his paintings became more popular, the bubbles, well, they seemed to speak to him. I realized to myself, im going, oh, my god, how preverse is this. You wouldnt inject yours, but youre injecting paint into bubble wrap. Reporter he works up close and personal. Closer to his canvas than most are with a brush. If you inject too slow or too fast, the bubble wont work. When i first did it, i stepped back 10 feet and went, oh, yeah. Reporter that must have taken forever . Forever, literally, that is the correct word. Reporter so he developed a computer algorithm that allows him a birds eye view of the bubbles while he is working in his own bubble. Isnt it tedious . It is, 100 . People think im o. C. D. , but im not. Reporter he is is efficient. His process creates two paintings as once. It turns out the drips have a magic all their own. So the other side is here. I very carefully remove it from the back to expose the impressions. Reporter yup, an impressionist work on one side, mirroring the painting on the other. Bradley harts work is a reminder, perhaps, in the midst of our pandemic, that we each have to do our part for the betterment of the whole. I joke to people, i live in a bubble. We choose who we let into our circle, and weve all been forced now to create microbubbles. But all of the little microbubbles come together and make a beautiful painting. Reporter who would have thought bubble wraps intended purpose has finally been realized. It did, indeed, grow up to be a wall covering after all. Sobr distanced pauley deep into this coronavirus pandemic, were also deep into vacation season. And as Kelefa Sanneh discovered, more and more of us are driven to get away from it all. Reporter this summer some families are trying to have it both ways. We dont really camp. Were not campers. Reporter theyre heading out and staying home. Well, you take your home with you. Reporter exploring public spaces while avoiding public bathrooms. It is nice knowing that we can control the environment that were living in. I dont have to worry about if something is sanitized or not. Reporter one way to deal with covid19 . Buy a recreational vehicle, an r. V. Weve looked at probably three of them so far. We just havent pulled the trigger yet. Reporter sales were up 90 in june, compared to last year. Are people telling you theyre possibly interested buying an r. V. Because of the pandemic . Just the fact there are so many people coming, calling, emailing. Reporter Gary Threlfall has owned garick r. V. In new jersey for 36 years. Lately he is seeing more firsttime buyers. It is kind of their only choice because an r. V. Is a sociallydistanced vehicle, a sociall sociallydistanced vacation, and a way to corral or keep your family together. Reporter that kind of sales pitch has been around for more than 100 years. This couple named the coconklins from new york city, they bought a bus. They reoutfitted it to this mobile decker mobile home, and they drove across the country to san francisco. The middle class is expanding, and so all of a sudden everybody is on the road. We can go anywhere we want to, weve got wheels. Reporter everybody, including lucille ball. If you need anything, wrap on the front window. Yes, dear. I will. Reporter in a 1954 movie, she breaks a cardinal r. V. Rule when towing a trailer, almost ride up front. That is the quintessential moment where the r. V. Becomes movie comedy, where youre working out your domestic issues. Reporter on garys lot, trailers start at around 15,000. But those sold out early. A lot of these dont look like what you would picture when you picture a 70s camper tailer. Theyre not. It is is 21st century. Reporter yes, you get your own bed, but also empty your own waste. Does it involve rubber gloves . You can empty your tanks without getting your hands dirty. It is not as bad as people might think. My motorhome has amenities i didnt have in my house. I have 45 feet of heated floors in the winter. Reporter this one may offer total convenience. If youd like a washer washer dryer. Wow. Reporter but it comes at a price. 162,000. You have a ranch, plenty of storage. Reporter miles per gallon . Seven. There is a Hidden Television here. Reporter whoa a nice flat screen. And, of course, a fireplace. How do i recline them . Oops, it is happening, here they come. These are electrical rather than mechanical. It is kind of strange not having a rearview mirror. It doesnt roll forward when ut pi it in drive. Thats on purpose. Reporter this is about the size of a city bus. No special license is required. Something about this vehicle does encourage caution. Reporter although firsttimers may need a bit of practice. Whoops oh, no that was a little tight. That was my back wheel, right . Yes. Reporter it is not exactly an impulse purchase. We were going to buy a second home in the country, in the mountains, and we decided to buy a motorhome instead, where our view could be anything we want it to be. Reporter this year lots of people have been cooped up at home. Especially with the children out of school and people working from home. Reporter and some of them are ready to move. So they could be working and traveling and seeing Different Things and there is no limitation to where you can go. For the sweaty faces. And the hidden smiles. The foggy glasses. And the muffled laughs. A simple piece of fabric makes a big statement i care. Wear a mask. Lets all do our part to slow the spread. Pauley with the Democratic Convention just over a week away, president ial candidate joe biden will announce his choice for a running mate any day, and he has vowed to choose a woman. Helping him to make that decision, a woman that has been at the former Vice President s side for more than 40 years. Rita braver is talking with jill biden. Reporter it is one of the most striking scenes of campaign 2020. [yelling] reporter jill biden sending off a heckler who goes after her husband. But then, jill biden has always stood up for her family. When you were a young girl, someone was picking on your little sister, and you knocked down the town bullies and i pulled back and i punched him right in the face. And i said, dont you ever throw worms on my sister again. It is more than just four more years at stake. Reporter but later, she is more measured. When it comes to President Trumps taunts of her husband at sleepy joe. Reporter would you call donald trump a bully . Im not going to call donald trump names because then doing the exact same negative thing that he does to other people, and i wont stoop to that. Reporter that combination of grace and grit once forward here in hammonton, new jersey, where jill jacobs was born in 1951. Her dads name is here on the world war ii monument. Donald jacobs. We used to take polish, actually, and shine his name, right there. Reporter this restaurant was once a pharmacy owned by her mothers parents. Her mom worked behind the soda fountain.
