KPIX KPIX 5 News At 6pm July 12, 2024

The movement snowballed after the milwaukee ox decision to not come out of the locker room before a playoff game in orlando. They gave a statement within the last couple of hours, all three games in the nba were postponed tonight. Pretty amazing, and the San Jose Earthquakes were supposed to play the Portland Timbers tonight, but ramirez is at the stadium with more on this breaking story, this is changing by the minute . You hit it right on the head, this is changing by the minute. We saw some of the earthquake Staff Members who were going to be in parking control kind of pull back from their positions out on the street here, i did get confirmation from a team source with the earthquakes that this happened just about half an hour ago. It started with the Portland Timbers players that decided not to come on the field in solidarity with social justice. Then, it spread to the San Jose Earthquakes team as well. This has been going across the country and a couple of games were scheduled tonight. There was a game between atlanta and miami that was scheduled and the players over there decided to boycott, the word of that boycott hit on the west coast after that so the players here decided to join in so this is just now happening, people are still getting word, media members that were going to cover the game are checking their phones on what to do next. This was going to be the first game back at stadium since the season was postponedmarccau so, a lot was lighting riding on this game. The first game that the players could come out onto the field, a lot was done in terms of testing and protocols to make sure that that would have been a safe endeavor for them. But now, its all been called off for tonight. Not sure if the game will be rescheduled but just when things were getting rolling the players have decided to boycott because of events happening around the country. We understand that this was so sudden in nature. You talk about a ball that gets rolling and picks up steam but apparently there were employees who actually showed up to work to work the game, and they didnt even really hear anything until just literally minutes ago. I mean, you can kind of tell that the word was filtering through because things were going along as normal but there were people checking in, members of the media going to be covering the game, there were not going to be any fans of the game because of covid but there were going to be maybe 100 or so vehicles who are going to watch the game on the big screen, all of that is off. The word kind of filters through and one by one you start hearing rumors of this and i was able to get confirmation from a team spokesperson, the team has not yet put out a statement. They would be doing that in a few minutes, but it takes one then, it is like a domino effect. Certain teams we will see how it changes through the evening. Reporting live in san jose. Our other big story tonight, a look at what is left behind after these devastating lightning fires have swept through the Spanish Flats neighborhood. The lightning complex has destroyed 978 structures, containment now stands at about 33 . Don ford spoke to one woman who returned to her burned down neighborhood and was brought to tears by what she saw. The mobile villa is gone. Once a tightknit community now destroyed, disintegrated, home after home after home burned to ash. I could tell that it was not going to make it. If you folks are starting to get there first look, Dave Davenport says he cannot believe it. We lost everything, pictures of my exwife, things i will never see again. Then, something incredible. In the middle katie reads home survived. She is still trying to understand what happened. I feel like it shouldve went down i feel like i shouldnt have been here at all but my home should be gone, my car didnt burn and i dont understand. Everything else is gone, but not that. I dont know, i feel terrible. I dont know. Katie has two children is a single mom and is grateful that everyone escaped unhurt. She remembers running for her life right i have never been so scared in my life, i have and through some traumatic things in my life but i thought i was going to die. I thought the flames were up to my windows and i have the six inch lift on my truck and i thought my windows were going to break because it was so hot. Katies children are staying with friends while she collects other essentials. The neighborhood was full of kids. We would all play right here every single day, ride bikes up and down. It is pretty insane to even look at it now, like this was our happy place. Its nothing now, it is wasteland. It is unclear what happens next to the mobile villa. Don ford, kpix 5. Heres how the other lightning complex fires are doing across the bay area. Good news, all containment numbers are going up. The Santa Cruz Mountains are now up to 19 containment and crews are taking a different approach to tame the flames. Our kiet do is live in felton, one of the communities fires they are protecting against it. It is very smoky right now, this is the southern flank, the most active area. Check out some of this footage that we shot a mile ago. A mile and half from where we are standing, this is felton empire road, the condition where cal fire was able to set backfires, starved the main body and create a buffer zone winds and temperatures are down, humidity is up and fire activity has greatly decreased. Cal fire says they know that evacuees are getting anxious and want to go home. Many roads have damaged power lines. Cal fire is looking uplifting evacuation orders once roads are cleared but there is no timeframe on it. We found a man by the name of jesse, he has put to rest any thoughts of trying to sneak back home. I go in, and there are cops everywhere. Not worth it. I dont know what i would do once i got in there. Also, new today, Santa Cruz County has released a map showing the location and addresses of more than 500 homes destroyed in the fire. Peace of mind for some neighbors and devastating for others. We are here with a lot of the back roads that locals are using to sneak back into the evacuation zone have been sealed off by law enforcement. Live in felton, kpix 5. Now, working to contain the complex alongside. A live look downtown san jose this evening, looking much better than it has over the past couple of days. Chief meteorologist joins us now, i took the little guys now for a little bit of a walk today. Got some fresh air and it was so much better. We have been taking them for short journeys outside, but blue skies are ahead. This is just afternoon, it shows complex blue skies overhead. A layer of smoke drifting around the bay area and over the bay theres the fog that has been locked in place. Air quality right now is a much better looking map we have seen. Plenty of spots in yellow even unhealthy downwind of the complex that are closer to the fires, with many more green dots compared to what we have seen over the past few days. Tomorrow we will see unhealthy air quality levels for sensitive groups. Severe asthma or emphysema. Things are gradually headed in a better direction in terms of air quality. We will check out current wind speeds and humidity levels. Coming up in just a few minutes. Stay with all of the lightning fire updates, you can still donate, this is important, help your neighbors and your friends, family. This isnt how freshman like others in vision the first week of college when applying to schools last year. I know that i would not have a good time if i was sitting at home at my desk. Not being able to meet any new people, may be online, but that is not fun. Srooms to eat. They have to sequester for at least seven days after moving into dorms which are all single occupancy. You dont see people because you are not supposed to which is definitely different from the typical meeting a bunch of people your freshman year. A few blocks away empty tables and unoccupied chairs are the reality at this coffee shop. There is not the high excitement, you dont have orientation groups running around or getting excited about football games, none of that is happening. The Coffee Company that helped recent refugees find work says revenue is down 90 since the pandemic shutdown started. We are hoping with School Starting that there is a little bit of a bump in that and we will look at that over the next few weeks but it is a significant drop. Undergraduates will learn remotely but many are taking a chance to experience what colleges post be like. I need to be in a new environment, meet new people get to know them better, be on campus even though we cannot be in class. The hub of energy usually feel the first day of school is largely muted. All right, so for the students who had to check into the dormitories, testing was mandatory, the standard is Different University Health Testing center said testing is Still Limited but they are trying to up that number and if capacity is Still Limited, i talked to one member of the Basketball Team being tested once a week so the standard is different for different students that are here on campus. We really got kind of a break today, some of this in some areas. The wind is onshore and as long as it is consistent, fire crews are fine. Especially if it has moisture which it did. The marine layer made its presence felt today, clouds and fog throughout the day over the city and over the east bay is the onshore wind consistent and locked in place. The wind speeds are not too strong for the fire crews to deal with. Especially since it delivers higher levels of relative humidity the driest spot still have relative humidity levels which is bonus territory for the end of august. You can often see 10 to 15 levels, slightly lower tomorrow, but the marine layer will sneak its way further inland once we head into the weekend they might get squashed a little bit and not as much help. Its been nice the past couple of days to get a handle on things. The fog is dropping over the buildings, 57 Degrees Holding up to 59 for a high in the city , down to 60 degrees, cool out there. Upper 60s in san jose and santa rosa. It has been improving, some smoking out because of your proximity to the fires there, tempter several degrees cooler than they were yesterday mostly about 5 to 10 degrees off of yesterdays pace, a cool evening the air quality has improved and the temperatures are not temperature just over 70, great weather for a walk thank you for sharing the pictures dropping into the 60s as we had to the rest of the night as the fog does spread inland. Then it backs up as we had there tomorrow morning. Visibility is rapidly improving and even along the coast, we are going to be seeing some peeks of sunshine, not a strong so temperatures are going to warm up just a little bit more on thursday. Low to mid 60s around the bay, upper 50s near the coast, most of the 70s inland and warm spots around 80 degrees. The hotspots tomorrow will reach up to about 90, talking about 80s for inland portions of the bay area, upper 60s and low 70s around the bay itself for the weekend the slightly warmer temperatures to the inland sections, but not out of control heat for early september. A bit of a warmup by early next week is the wind shifts to an offshore direction for at least a couple of days. Some more breaking news is happening in sports, lets throw it over to dennis.
