Theyre for sale. What is it with americans and their lawns . According to a 2005 nasa study, weve planted Something Like 40 million acres of grass. We spend 40 billion a year on tending it. So no surprise, coronavirus has made americans lawncare crazy. You could argue that the perfect lawn is the perfect coping mechanism in a world that has been turned upside down. Reporter historian Ted Steinberg is the author of american agreed the obsessive quest for the perfect lawn. His own lane in shaker heights, ohio, is not perfect. Reporter once upon a time, only landed gentry with legends of servants in the 18th century had lawns. It wasnt until after world war ii that ordinary, middleclass americans found themselves in possession of, and subsequently possessed by, their own lawns. When they moved to brand new suburbs. It was the cold war. America had an enemy the soviet union. Americans had an enemy, too weeds. Rallying those wed warriors it kills dandelions reporter the scots company ran advertising compaigns that linked peoples personal identity to the kind of landscape they had around their homes. Reporter with annual sales already topping 3 billion, scots is experiencing a bonanza year. Sales of its lawn and garden products this season up 24 . So the pandemic is creating new lawn fanatics . Reporter we wanted to meet a real lawn nut and see how coronavirus had affected his obsession. I was mowing, and i noticed, huh, there are 13 stripes from the road to the garden bed here. And i thought, wow, i could probably put a flag right there. Reporter so we went to visit zac williams in upstate new york, and he has been mowing the American Flag into his lawn for the 4th of july the past two summers. I knew it was cool, so i thought maybe this could go viral, and it did. Last winter was kind of rough for me. I kept looking forward to summer and spring so i could get back on the lawn. Reporter how much does zac williams love his grass . This year i cut these plugs out and planted them in some pots and thought they would be great christmas gifts, too. Reporter when you see all of these machines lined up on your lawn, what happens inside . Some people are into sports cars, not zac. The one that really gets me excited is the one by you, martha, a john deeres mower. And i want to get on this orange mower and full throttle rip it down the lawn. Reporter top speed . 8 miles an hour. Last fall williams decided to turn his passion into a sideline business, cutting and caring for other peoples lawns at night and on weekends. Good thing he did, thanks to covid19 his day job in the travel industry, gone. Being able to cut the lawn into those nice patterns, which i like to do, does give me some order and sense of calm right now. My name is tiana caldwell. Im a. J. Caldwell. Reporter before the pan pandemic struck, the Caldwell Family of kansas city was just making ends meet. Derrick was working as an electrician, and tianna was Training Office workers, and a. J. Was looking forward to playing football after school. If you go back to the beginning of march, were you busy . Was it slow . It was busy, and then everybody just stopped. Reporter you might say covid19 infected the familys finances. Jobs dried up, supposing a stark reality they had no safety net. Reporter were you able to save any money before the pandemic hit . No. Reporter so just paycheck to paycheck, right . Yeah. Yeah. Reporter even before the coronavirus, nerly four out of 10 American Adults said they would have difficulty covering a 400 unexpected expense. We got help from family. We got help from friends. Reporter the caldwells also got help from casey tenant, a housing Rights Organization founded by tarra. The pandemic laid bare inequities that have been in our country for a long time. Reporter the Census Bureau found income and inequality twothirds of the total wealth is owned by the richest 5 . At the same time, more than 38 million americans are living in poverty, and it is projected that up to 54 Million People might not have enough to eat this year. We have a methodology that what is good for wall street is good for main street, but that really has never been true. Reporter economic inequality is the subject of a new documentary, based on the surprise bestseller by tom piketty. He has surveyed centuries of economic upheaval. In the 18th century, money married money and publicly it is a death sentence. [inaudible] it is more sustainable. Reporter more than 29 Million People are now collecting unemployment benefits. While at the top end of the economic ladder, in the first three months of the pandemic the net worth of the more than 600 billionaires in the u. S. Grew by 20 . Jeff bezos, the owner of amazon, saw his net worth increase by 43 . 8 billion in the first months of the pandemic. Those who have the least advantages, the least economic opportunities, are going to bear the largest burden of any kind of downturn, whether it be an economic downturn or a Public Health crisis. Reporter Valerie Wilson is a director at the liberal economic institute. She sees not only an economic divide by a racial divide. Covid19 has magnified these Racial Disparities we have known about f decades because of the persistence of many of these disparities, we can almost predict how any crisis is going to go. Reporter for example, black households have just 10 of the net worth of white households. For hispanic households, the figure is just 12 . The combination of covid19 and it being such a universal problem, not only in this country but around the world, has really challenged us to sort of question the idea of whether or not we really are all in this together. Reporter but not everyone sees income and wealth disparity as negative trends. At the end of the day, capitalism is just trying to maximize, optimize, grow everything as fast as it possibly can. Thats how people get rich. Reporter edward connor, a scholar the conservative American Enterprise institute has written about the upside of inequality. He argues forgiving entrepreneurs incentives to create the next google or apple or amazon, looking to free markets to help boost incomes. The more prosperous the economy, the richer the bottom 20 . Theortheyre depending on government distribution or their income, and we get it from increasing the overall prosperity of the economy. And the best measure of that is not just bezos salary. Reporter Valerie Wilson isnt buying it. In this country, we have this idea about the American Dream and the virtues of capitalism, if you work hard, you get an education, you put in your time, you take risks, then youre able to climb the economic ladder. But i think it is clear that we get this billionaire super class, and those opportunities are not so evenly distributed. And, in fact, the economic gains that we all contribute to are increasingly being shared by only a few. Reporter so will the coronavirus change our economic past . Tom piketty believes it could go either way. Do you believe that the pandemic presents an opportunity here . What we see from history, from crises, like pandemic, sometimes a necessity, unfortunately, it changes the political atmosphere, but after crises, it can get better. And it can be a political monster, as weve seen. Reporter as covid19 continues to rage across the country, the initial 2. 2 trillion in government stimulus money has run out, and congress and the white house dont appear close to agreeing on a more substantial deal. And also a concern the patchwork of state and federal moratoriums on evictions wont be enough to keep renters from sliding into homelessness. Many people got sick and died because of insecure housing situations. That number will go over time as people face eviction. And it is inexcusable. We live in the richest country in the world and we can and must guarantee that everyone who has a home. Reporter it wont happen overnight, but where do we go from here . The thing is, it could happen overnight. When we need to print a trillion dollars and get it out to people and their Bank Accounts, we can do it. It has given me lot of hope. Reporter and tianna also has hope that some day when we say were all in this together, well mean it. We should be helping each other. If one of us is not okay, none of us is okay. Our lee cowan caught up with announcer vin scully. It is time for dodgers baseball. Reporter the last time we met up with hall of fame broadcaster vin scully, it was a warm summer night at dodgers stadium in los angeles. Here is my office. Reporter not a bad view. It was eight years ago, but the privilege of going to a ballpark in person feels like a century ago, doesnt it . Baseball in 2020is the season of cardboard cutouts and piped in fan noise. Scully thought he had seen everything. Balls out of the park, yes, but fans out of the park, too . Thanks, covid. Ive spent my life in sports, and it has just about shut it down. Fernandez has hit the nohitter. If you have a so sombrero, throw it to the side. Reporter he wasnt just the voice of the dodgers. High fly ball into right field. She is gone [applause and cheering] reporter scully was, in his heart, baseball storyteller. In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened. [applause and cheering] reporter after 67 seasons, the redhead who started with the brooklyn dodgers at 23 retired in 2016, just shy of his 89th birthday. Ive needed you far more than you needed me. [applause and cheering] in my heart, in my mind, it was enough. And ive never had one misgiving about the fact, you know, i should have waited one more year. Reporter no regrets . Not even one. Uhuh. Reporter is it strange watching as a fan . I dont watch it critically. Im not listening really to what the announcers say. Are they trying to steal my stuff . I have none of that. Reporter nobody could steal scullys stuff, but they can now collect some of it. Over the years, hes accumulated some of the games crown jewels, world series trophies and rings, president ial autographs and more awards than places to put them. The awards are gratefully received, but theyre only for the moment. Reporter so he has decided to sell some of those monumental moments through hunt auctions in philadelphia. He wants the proceeds, which could be pretty substantial, to go to his five kids, 16 grand kids, and to charity. Was there anything hard to give up . You know, i must be very coldhearted because there isnt one thing that i really felt i hated to give up, not one. Reporter not even this a scrap of paper scully got as a boy, hanging around the upper right field deck at the polo grounds in new york. And lo and behold, there was babe ruth. And he reached into his pocket and he took out what looked like 50, 100 business cards, and on each card was his signature, babe ruth. Isnt that amazing . It somehow showed up when we started digging. Reporter did you forget you had it . I didnt forget, but i wasnt quite sure where it was. Reporter some items he has had for most of his career, lying this battered leather binder. You took this to every game . Every game. I couldnt live without this. Reporter still taped inside are yellowed notes to himself. Like this poem he would read whenever he saw a toddler in the stands. A little, tiny kid, and in here i had, oh, the thumb suckers thumb may look wrinkled and wet and withers and white as snow, but the taste of the thumb is the sweetest taste yet as only we thumb suckers know. Reporter before we left, we noticed his 1988 world series ring. Surely that hell keep, we thought, but, no. Ive worn it every day, almost every hour of every day, but it will go. Reporter vin vin scully is not out of the game. In fact, he just twit
