KPIX KPIX 5 News At 6pm July 12, 2024

Sonoma counties. Evacuation orders and warnings are in yellow, on all sides. New evacuation orders in effect, west of the town of rutherford, new warnings have been issued west of oakville as well. Highway 29, shuts down, from calistoga north, to middletown, in lake county. The winds are not just a concern for the north bay, a red flag warning is also in effect for the east bay hills, through saturday morning. Tonight, beginning with kenny, who is live on the outskirts of angwin in napa county with the effort to save homes. Kenny . Reporter we are here in the northwest section of the town of angwin, take a look right behind me, that is the fire line, you can see that the flames reached all the way up to this point, the bulldozers have come through, and created a break, that saved the homes just days ago, but as you can see, as we walk over here, there is a home that is standing by, right now, and standing. Homeowners are doing everything they can tonight, so that they understand that the winds and fires can shift and the direction can shift and they are doing what they can to save them. Every 30 minutes, every hour, since the first day they have been coming here. Firefighters have been checking this Vantage Point at her home. You can see the helicopter above. That is in the northwest direction from angwin making some drops right now. It is scary. Reporter she and her landlord are staying put after what they saw days ago, and doing what they can if the fire has had back in their direction tonight. If i die, okay. But, for your tenant, you feel obligated. Even today, i saw 10 different trucks coming through. They dont have manpower, and you have to try to defend yourself. It is very hard. Kenny, how often are the firefighters coming to that house where you are . They have made multiple checks on this house, about an hour ago, i also saw the firefighters coming up to this Vantage Point, just beyond over there, where you see those charge trees, there is a steep drop after that, so that gives them a decent Vantage Point, to check out some of the hotspots and flareups and that is what they are looking for tonight because they understand, and these homeowners do as well, that any type of flareup, that can of course ignite and increase throughout the night, depending on the wins, and the shift in direction, so these homeowners say they are ready and you certainly understand why they have decided to stay put. Sure, they want to try to protect the property. Kenny, thank you. Wilson walker continues our Team Coverage in calistoga, flames threatening the outskirts of that city right now, and triggering some new evacuations. Wilson . Reporter liz, here in downtown calistoga, a lot of smoke and soot and ash and not a lot of people. A whole lot of folks have heeded the evacuation warnings, gotten out of town, the fire as you mentioned, just 5 minutes away from where i am standing right now. As far as i know, i drove down here about two hours ago. It looked like it just started. I flipped around to get packed and ready to leave. Reporter fire crept through the hills on both sides of napa valley today and in places like Jericho Canyon just outside of calistoga, deputies were demanding that people leave. I am trying to decide what the owner of the vineyard i work in is going to do. I am part of the team and he has got his son and two other members with him. Reporter barely 5 minutes away in downtown calistoga, charles was hosing down his barbecue business. Psychologically, it takes a lot out of you. So, i hate to see it happen. But then you know, that is what this is right now. Reporter they have found themselves sitting in the middle of several fire disasters now going back to 2017. The tub fire, which was the last big one, started around the corner here, that is tubbs lane, about 200 yards in that direction. We were evacuated three weeks and 17. Reporter the classifier continues to sit beyond the edge of town with red flag conditions in effect through saturday. I am thankful for the firefighters, thankful for all of the infrastructure that we have here. Wilson, we saw sheriffs deputies trying to get people out of those areas, up near highway 29, have most people left at this point . By what i saw driving around up there, yes they have. Late today, they actually declared some of those roads impassable, because of the conditions created by the fire. They were making what they would consider i think sort of their last sweep through their neighborhoods before it gets dark with the fire now creeping around some of those roads. So most people looks like they were out, they had the highlow sirens going, from those sheriffs deputies cruisers. The message was out. I think that side of town has pretty much emptied out. Hopefully everybody is safe. Olson, thank you. Governor gavin got a firsthand look at the damage today, touring the remains of foothills at the elementary school, in st. Helena. While he was there, he spoke about the state strategic Fire Suppression plan, which includes forest management, but he also called for more federal funding. The majority of the work that has been done on federal forest has been done by taxpayers of the state of california. We have more support in that area. Stay with kpix 5 and kpix. Com and cbsn bay area for continuing coverage of the glass fire. The strong winds spiking a red flag warning, for much of the bay area, the next 24 hours are critical. It is hot, and it is very dry. It is very hazy, as you know this is what it was like taking off from sfo this afternoon. Chief meteorologist, paul, tracking the smoke and the wind for us. It is the wind that is driving that smoke across the bay area. The fire in napa county and Sonoma County producing all of the smoke which this particular map highlights it in white and we are almost off the scale here but that gets drifted down across the rest of the bay area, the air quality is just awful. Everywhere. It is worse in the immediate vicinity of the fire and downwind of that into parts of the trivalley but it is bad everywhere. It is not going to get much better tomorrow. It will be unhealthy especially for the north bay and england in the east bay but at least unhealthy for sensitive groups, around the city, down into the valley, we also have to worry about the potential for more fires propping up, that is where the windiest conditions will be, those gusts up to 30 Miles Per Hour and it will be hot. We will take a look at the forecast in detail in just a few minutes. Here is one bit of good news this evening, the as are heading to the next round of the playoffs sports director, dennis, tells us it is a long time coming. I want to know how many president s were involved. [ laughter ] well, youre about to find out. The as were looking to end a date dating back decades. The last time they actually won a winner take all playoff game, Richard Nixon was in the oval office, 1973. Oakland trailed 30 early but rallied back in the middle innings. Chad, with a big two outhit in the fifth. Is only hit that ending. They are driving to. As have a 64 lead. The bullpen held the line today. Liam hendrix through 49 pitches yesterday. Back today, struck out the ninth, to finish it off, the as beat the white sox 64, they win a playoff series for the First Time Since george w. Bush was in the oval office what is the feeling now advancing past the first round . You give us three and we were able to squeak it out today. It was rewarding obviously. We had to do a lot. I woke up this morning feeling like this was going to be a hard game. And it was a hard game. We had to use a lot of guys, we had to make some uncomfortable decisions at times. The as now move on to face the houston astros, and dusty baker. Or reaction and more highlights, coming up in a few minutes. Back to you. Still ahead, earthquakes swarm, more than 101 california communities, the chance that a 7. 0 is next. Gov as the world waits for a vaccine to potentially stop this pandemic, researchers have great expectations, for a new experimental treatment. The hope, it will be back at an infection, keep you out of the hospital, and stop further transmission. When it comes to covid19 in california, and the bay area, some cautious optimism. California is doing better than the nation. Reporter hospitalizations and deaths have hit new lows on average but that can always change. We are entering into the fall, it is going to get colder. People are going to be inside. Reporter as we wait for a vaccine, a new tool is now getting tested, for patients with mild or moderate infections. Not sick enough to be admitted to the hospital but sick enough that they have symptoms. Reporter the Infectious Disease specialist, doctor annie, is heading up the trial, at zuckerberg general hospital. It is one of several signs across the nation, testing what is called a monoclonal antibody. It is an engineered version of what our bodies naturally produce. Antibodies are a way to take advantage of what the body normally does, to fight off infections including viral infections. By taking an antibody that has been shown to work in people who are recovering from the coronavirus, and making a copy of a very effective antibody, and then giving it back to people. Reporter it is given once by infusion, the hope, infected people will feel better faster. They wont get hospitalized, and by reducing the viral load, it may stop them from infecting anyone else. It is far riskier. Reporter Infectious Disease expert, doctor john, hopes for success but the holidays are just around the corner. Thanks giving and christmas, people are traveling and we know travel just is like embers spreading, it is like somebody carrying those embers in a plane. Reporter the trial is currently enrolling patients, and if you have been recently diagnosed with covid19 within the past 10 days, you may be eligible to join. For more information, go to our website, kpix. Com. The more than 200 earthquakes have been recorded, in southern california, in just the past 24 hours. What is going on . Here is a look at the map from the usgs, you can see the swarm in remote imperial county. Near the mexican border. The largest quake so far, magnitude 4. 9 around this time yesterday. Usgs says there is a one in 300 chance of a magnitude 7. 0 in the next seven days. 3 doesnt sound like much until you consider the year we are in. Fortunately those quakes are in an area that is very sparsely populated. We will keep an eye on that and we are keeping an eye of course on the three big stories in our weather which is the air quality, the heat, and the fire weather concerns especially around the glass fire. Spare the air alert has been continued through tuesday of next week. The poor air quality is certainly going to be with us tomorrow, and it may improve over the weekend. Still going to be hot in tomorrow, near record high temperatures again, and the red flag warning is in effect through early on saturday morning, with gusty winds and low humidity, particularly in the vicinity of the glass fire but the Higher Elevations of the bay area are included within that red flag warning. The worst air quality tomorrow will be downwind to the classifiers of the north bay and down into the trivalley but it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups across the rest of the bay area, and this is the best case scenario. The air quality right now is worse than that as you can just see. Picture is worth 1000 words in that regard. You can barely see the bay bridge. Temperatures are still hot, even through that smoke and haze. That up into the 90s, concord, and livermore made it up into the 90s in san francisco. 93 for a high earlier today. 92 in san jose. Temperatures will drop back but only to the 60s and low 70s, by early tomorrow morning. Because that blanket of smoke overhead, that is the same way a blanket of cloud cover does, it keeps the warmth at ground level. Even with the sunshine being filtered through, all of that smoke, we will still heat up to around 80 in the city tomorrow. Upper 80s, low to mid 90s, even spots around 100 degrees for high temperatures on friday. High temperatures in the low 70s along the coast, the onshore breeze will kick into a greater extent over the weekend and that will cracked the heat but we still have the heat advisory in effect for almost all the bay area except right along the coast and that continues through 8 00 pm tomorrow. In terms of the fire weather, humidities have been in the teens around the glass fire today and those numbers dont recover very much overnight into early tomorrow morning, and the relative humidity levels just crater tomorrow, we are talking about the humidity levels around 6 or 7 tomorrow afternoon. Any new fire that gets going will rapidly spread with breezy conditions in the Higher Elevations. There is the relief, further down the line in the seven day forecast, cant happen soon enough. Be prepared for the poor air quality and heat once again on friday. Dennis . It was literally all hands or in this case, arms on deck for the as and white sox today. The two clubs combined to use 17 pictures in this must win game three. Veteran, mike, made his first career postseason start, didnt last long. Robert hit one 487 feet to get chicago on the board, fires was fortunate to only allow that one run. He had 5 hits recorded only 5 out. Bottom four, as down 30. Sean murphy, that is a two run home run, to get the as within a run, family section, later in the inning, chicagos, matt foster, making his postseason debut and couldnt find the strike zone. He walked back to background and the as took a 43 lead. Chatted up with the game tied, he came through with 2 out, it was the only hit of that inning but drove in, and the as are back up on top at 64. Josc led the majors in runs batted in this season but rounds ended with the doubleplay. As pitching staff, six runners over the final three innings, hang on, defeat the white sox 6 4, they win a series for the First Time Since 76. The as will place play the astros, game one is monday, oakland knows they cant get caught up in their bad blood with houston. Not being petty and not taking, like letting our emotions get the better of us by trying to be overthetop, i think it is one of those things where we have played them enough times this year, we had a good record, they know that, we know that, now we will go into a series and hopefully take care of business early. All smiles after blowing and open in the eighth inning, former giant closer, mark, pitched a 12, 3 night they struck out 28 times and did not score a run in 22 innings. They won a series for the First Time Since 2001. A lot of streaks being broken, but the biggest one, locally, the as are moving on. Back to you. That was such great news.
