Grammys. Why the weeknd charges them with corruption after he was snubbed in this years nominations. Well show you how the grammys are responding. First, heres todays eye opener, its your world in 90 seconds. The possibility of not being able to see family and friends over the holiday is heartbreaking for all of us. As states across the country see cases double, concern that thanksgiving travel could intensify an alarming surge of infections. At this point in the pandemic, the real threat for infection is not so much the public square, but rather the small household gathering. The white house is allowing biden to receive daily briefings. The news comes after the president elect introduced his first round of cabinet picks. Theyll tell me what i need to know not what i want to know. The president is singing his own praises after a historic day on wall street. The dow surging past 30,000. Thats a sacred number, 30,000. Extreme weather tore through texas. A Tornado Warning was issued as a severe thunderstorm hit the dallas ft. Worth area. All that and champions in the korean baseball league. Coolest trpship trophy ever and all that matters. Congratulations on your new book, by the way. Thank you. It is im sorry. This is i just carry it with me everywhere i go. 10 million copies. Hard to beat. Now that mine is selling, they package it with her book so shes selling more. On cbs this morning. Mr. President , would you like to take me on in a game of waste basketball . Absolutely. The pressure is on. Oh, you got oh, no its what i do how many more you got . I got five more over here. Ah that was so close. Colbert, im getting crushed. [ laughter ] ah, man. Oh oh whew this mornings eye opener is presented by progressive, making it easy to bundle insurance. Oh, my god. Welcome to cbs this morning. Even know im like, huh . That is a ringer. Barack obama is very good in basketball. Thats not basketball. Thats its own game. I like watching grown men become boys there. Got serious there. I used to play that game when i was a kid up in my bedroom. Something tells me theres going to be a rematch because barack obama doesnt lose. Congrats to you, stephen colbert. Well begin with this that was fun. Americans are facing a heartwrenching choice this thanksgiving. Heres the question, to see family and friends and potentially put them at risk or stay home . Aaa was expecting up to 50 million travelers this holiday but that was before new guidance before the cdc and their advice is stay where you are. The reason is an alarming uptick in cases, including more than 172,000 new ones yesterday. More than 2,100 people were reported dead in that 24hour period. Thats the most in a single day since early may. Kris van cleave is at Reagan National airport outside washington. Kris, good morning. Reporter well, good morning. You can see what holiday busy looks like in washington. The tsa says this airport has only recovered about 25 of its passenger traffic from prepandemic leveling, but other airports across the country in chicago, dallas, houston, denver, several in florida are at 60 to 70 of where they were before the pandemic. So people are traveling, but whether you are a go or a no go this year, for many that decision was not easy. Despite the covid warnings, americans are on the move. As long as everybody wear masks, everything is clean, its nice. I dont mind it. Reporter more than 4 million have already passed through airport checkpoints, and tsa is expecting today will be one of its busiest since march. Sometimes youre in a crunch and youve got to do what youve got to do. Youre going to see those barriers. Go to any airport, theyre going to be very similar. Reporter tsa administrator David Peksoke showed us some of the things in place like plexiglass, officers in ppe and new scanners. Do you think people should be traveling . I think passengers need to make a judgment. My job in tsa and my officers job is to make sure if you do choose to travel, we provide you with safe and as secure experience as we possibly can. Reporter just last week the cdc followed mayors and governors in urging people not to travel for thanksgiving. Those arriving in los angeles starting this morning will be required to fill out a health form asking them to quarantine for two weeks or risk a 500 fine. In new york city, police will be looking to enforce quarantine rules. Pia duryea is driving to see her patients in connecticut. It was a really tough decision to make. I respect what the cdc guidelines are. Its made me think long and hard about it. Reporter both in their 80s and recovering from Summer Health scares. I wanted to go see them because you see all these stories about people who who wish they had seen their family members before they got sick. Reporter but Philadelphia Health care worker Samantha Halpern told her family to stay in st. Louis just two hours before their flight. As cases climbed, they decided this year would be a zoomsgiving. Id rather have them not come this thanksgiving rather than risk not spending any future holidays with them from here on out. Reporter aaa expects 50 Million People will go somewhere for thanksgiving this year. The cdc is urging folks if they do do that to wear a mask when theyre around people they dont live with, particularly indoors. Our dr. Jon lapook suggested breaking up the thanksgiving eating from the thanksgiving socializing. Meaning, when the plastic masks are off, separate. Come together with masks on in wellventilated spaces. Those cdc guidelines are clear. Thank you very much. A brutal storm system ripped through north texas overnight destroying buildings including this one which collapsed on a car and a van in arlington. That system also knocked over power lines. Its now moving through the middle of the country so watch out. Cbs news meteorologist and climate specialist Jeff Berardelli is tracking it for us. Good morning to you. Where is the system headed . Reporter good morning, tony. So the system is headed east. Were going to have bookend storm systems. One at the beginning of the holiday vacation and at the end. That could be a humzinger. Right now talk about whats happening. We have rain falling across texas and the ohio and tennessee valley. That is heading toward the east so watch out for flight delays especially in the eastern half of the nation from today until tomorrow. You can see it progressing towards the east. Now, for your thanksgiving youre going to be waking up to probably some rainfall in boston and new york city. If youre planning on an outdoor thanksgiving it may not be the best there, but the rest of the country is looking really good. Southeast and also in the pacific northwest. Then we have a big storm system thats going to move in to the eastern half of the nation as we head into the weekend and beyond. Especially monday. Gayle, we could be talking about a very big snowstorm for parts of the ohio valley and great lakes and maybe another one by the end of next week. Youre at penn state . I was looking at all the traffic behind you, jeff. Whats that truck doing . Jeff was advertising. Reporter yeah. Im getting commission. Yes, i get it. Thank you, jeff. Thank you, very important information. Now back to the pandemic, which has hit crisis levels in americas heartland. One hospital in topeka, kansas, has had to turn its waiting room into a hospital room for those without covid because the e. R. Is just too full. Our lead national correspondent, david begnaud, is in fargo, north dakota. David, good morning to you. That state were told just hit another daily high in covid deaths and the numbers tell the story here. Reporter you know, right now, the dakotas both north and south, lead the world. They lead the world right now on a per capita basis when it comes to the number of people who are dying on a daily basis. Look, politics has affected so much of whats happening here. People will fight you on the facts. We asked one wellknown person how north dakota is handling the pandemic . If you were grading it it would be an f, probably an fminus. Its that bad. Reporter Joel Heitkamp hosts a talk radio program. He takes tons of calls about covid every day in a largely republican state. You have a right to call in to this show anytime you want. The height of hypocrisy is how we care for our edlderly. Go into costco, walmart, they say put your blank mask on, thir goieyre going to put but you know what, theyre not willing to do that around grandpa and grandma after they have been out in the bar and i cant figure it out. Reporter just yesterday north dakota reported 37 new covidrelated deaths. That is a new high. They have the second highest mortality rate in the world. Some of their hospitals are overwhelmed. Thats why the u. S. Air force has sent 60 nurses to help staff hospitals around the state. In south carolina, the debate over wearing a mask continues statewide. I think if we choose to wear it for our own protection, thats on us. But to force us to wear it, you know, i just im against that. Reporter around 50 of south dakotans say they do not wear a mask. Kelby krabbenhoft, ceo of the sanford health, the Largest Health system in the dakotas suddenly retired after creating a firestorm by saying he wasnt going to wear his mask at work, because he had recovered from the coronavirus and was immune. In a statement his own Health System said they had mutually agreed to part ways and his views didnt reflect those of the company. He also downplayed the seriousness of the pandemic to sious falls cbs affiliate keloland. Its hard for me to say were at a crisis. That would be misleading from a clinical standpoint. Reporter he is not a doctor, but his chief medical officer, allison suttle, is. I asked her. Would you classify what is happening here in the dakotas as a crisis . I would. Reporter 36 hours after she contradicted her ceo on cbs this morning, he is gone. Dr. Suttle is also calling on south dakotas republican governor, kristi noem, to mandate masks statewide but the governor refuses to. North dakotas republican governor doug burgum did that two weeks ago. How much is trumps messaging affecting local politics here in north dakota . It affects everything here in north dakota. If he tells a lot of these folks that the science doesnt back it up or that you can shove a light bulb up your keester and its all going to make things better, some people here are going to believe it. Reporter we hear that loud and clear. One more story before we go. Yankton, south dakota. A small town, the commission met to talk about mask mandates and decided no. The local newspaper said the Commission Wants more time to educate people. Heres a reasonable question. How much more time do you need . Were eight months into a pandemic. How much more time do you need . To explain to people that masks matter . Exactly, david, thank you. Exactly. And, please, please, dont shove a light bulb up your keister. And you said that with a straight face. You do have to say that because people are paying attention in different ways. Yes, they are. All right. We could be getting closer to a Coronavirus Vaccine with promising results from pfizer and others. For more on the timeline were joined by Moncef Slaoui who leads Vaccine Development for operation warp speed. Mr. Slaoui, thanks so much for being with us. Good morning. We could be just weeks away from a vaccine, the first batch being distributed according to secretary alex azar. Who gets the first doses, and how exactly will it be distributed . So yes, we should be, i hope, close to an approval first of the Pfizer Vaccine that has shown 95 efficacy. Reviewed by the fda on december 10th and maybe on the 11th or the 12th that proved within 24 hours from approval we plan to distribute the vaccine. In the case of the Pfizer Vaccine, pfizer themselves will be shipping the vaccine, to the exact location that each states will have identified as the area where they want the vaccine doses. Doses proportionately distributed for each state. Now, who will get the vaccine is a very important question that the cdc and its Adviser Committee practices for the acip are reviewing as we speak and continue reviewing until december 10th. The American Academy of medicine has recommended that highrisk people, elderly, health care workers, firstline workers, should be part of the first wave of vaccinees. How likely before everyone will be able to get it . Within the first wave, we think there is about 100 million 110 Million People. Those should be covered based on our plans between the month of december and the month of february. Now, the u. S. Population as a whole should be covered in terms of Vaccine Doses Available somewhere between the month of may and the month of december so on an ongoing basis month on month, well have more and more doses to immunize to potentially immunize the full population, which we hope will accept to be vaccinated. Mr. Slaoui, president elect biden said he may alter operation warp speeds Vaccine Distribution plans. Have the people with operation warp speed been in touch with the Incoming Administration . Has there been contact . We have not yet been in contact. We understand that as of yesterday the contacts will start. Secretary azar has said that we are ready to discuss and of course share all information that we have and we will be happy to do it. We think that the plans we have are very clear and very thoroughly thought through, but of course well welcome every input. All right. Moncef slaoui with operation warp speed. Thank you so much for being with us this morning. President elect joe biden says his Transition Team is now in touch with officials across every single federal agency. Former secretary of state john kerry. In addressing the climate crisis, president elect joe biden is determined to seize the future now. Reporter the president elects team also highlights a marked shift in policy. America is back. Multilateralism is back. Diplomacy is back. Reporter the group was announced a day after the General Services administration gave the green light for the formal transition to begin. And in an interview with nbc news lester holt, mr. Biden says members of his staff are already working with the trump administration. The outreach has been sincere. Its not been begrudging so far and i dont expect it to be. Reporter the president elect was noncommittal about nominating progressives Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders to his cabinet. Taking someone out of the senate, taking someone out of the house at particularly personal consequence is really a difficult decision. Reporter but he said he would consider nominating a republican for a post, perhaps even one who voted for president trump. Meanwhile the president , who still refuses to concede, made an impromptu 64second appearance in the White House Briefing room, touting the stock market. The stock market has just broken 30,000. Never been broken, that number. Thats a sacred number. Reporter mr. Trump also participated in the annual turkey pardon. Corn, irant you a full pardon. Reporter two of president trumps advisers confirmed to cbs news that the president is expected to join his attorney, rudy giuliani, in gettysburg, pennsylvania, today for a republican hearing on election fraud. It would mark his first trip outside of the Washington Area since the election. President elect biden remains here in delaware where hell deliver a thanksgiving address. Tony. Thank you very much. Guys, we remain incredibly polarized as a country. Remember, i did a story on polarization and you made an amazing point at the table. Were like a married couple here in this country, were not getting along. Turns out theres a professor at the university of minnesota, a marriage counselor, who thinks thats true and the very same tack takes from couples counseling can be used to bring democrats and republicans together so i started his theory. So we need a marriage counselor for president . No, for all the rest of us who voted for two different people to be president and only one can take the job. Very curious, ive been in marriage counseling. It depends on if you get the we have much more news ahead for you. A number one pop star calls the Grammy Awards corrupt.
